- n Near Memphis, April '20. Editors Journal r: : r V A. Mound .'City,. Illinois, are to be seen .those mementos tf tlio natioa'd srtipendou-s CdUy Or 'foresight, the monitors, one of which was finished at EvaDsvifle. There are seven Or eight of them, conspicuous only forUheir white ' towers and fcinoke Btacts". Behind them lie two of the old iron-clads. It is extremely doubtful if these costly vessels will ever be of any service to. the. people that have to pay for thern. Mound City is barely out of water. Since' the .war clewed, the town has ceased to grow, and about, the only vitality . it possesses, is the presence of a few troops to guard the monitors for fear they go off and the Government property stored here. . ,airo is growing of course, but is nc f making tho?e giant strides predicted by the Himes, about the tiine it established a branch in 'New York and illustrated ' Our Situation'' by an elaborate map,' in which Cairo was made the centre of ' the universe, with multitudinous railroad lines diverging on japer,Lin all possible directions. '- During the briof time the llichmond laid there, ' we cautiously approached the inner edge of Front Street, and, holding to . a post, "looked far down into the miclet of the 'city,' and 'discovered that Cairo is not entirely devoid bf Feip- water." We never saw such an air1 of dullness' pervading the public landing at Cairo, as on this occasion. There was no freight except a lew barrels of potatoen. ' The' Marble City, Dora, and Princess had just arrived from .St. Louis with full cargoes for Memphis, Arkansas and White Rivers; and the J. U. Groesbeck which lef'tNew Orleans -within the. present year, was Just leaving for Cincinnati. The llichmond made the run from Paducah to Cairo in just 2J hours,. She left Cairo at 5:15 and arrived, at Co-' lumpus at (3:35.; Columbus is, noted as being the northern terminus of the Mobile & Ohio Itailroad. and , fo.r having been a place hard to pass by Federal gunboats a few years ago. Navigation here, as, well -. as, at Island rip. ,10, ha vastly improved since then. The bluff remain much the same as it was then, but all traces of the fortifications have disappeared. A few hogsheads of tobacco was;. all the freight obtained at Columbus. While the Upper Mississippi is comparatively low, the Lower Mississippi is bank full, and , large . sections cf country overflowed. We - met the Belle Memphis at the .fbert of Wolf Island, and passed Island No. 10, at 10 Ojclpck. The clouds : had . disappeared. -and the moon, as it sunk to rest behind the dense forests, cu.st.a Bomtre light-npon the once famous but bow rapidiy d'sappcaricg Island. At least two-thirds of it is already gonevand old river men consider it only a question of time as to when it Ehalh-be - reckoned no more than a" "two head."- It viil never again impede'the free navigation of the Mississippi at high.ater.? . . The sun rose bright and clear this morning as we neared Fort Pillow, ----" mile-1 below " Cairo; which' we passed at 7 o'clock. The blutf once so formidable is also, rapidiy disappearing, much of the front of the hights having already plunged head-, loDg Aito the- mid water 'of -the mighty father of waters. May it not be that the great.liuler by the operations of His' immutable laws, wills it thus to.blot out all those mementoes of a ilHricked rebellion ? Here we met the Mary Erwin. She, the Belle Memphis and a tow boat are the only boats we have met eince leaving iCaire, a distance of 17pj miles, another evfdeuee of -the duff-: ness in stenmboatinsr. The wind has been IJowing quite fiercely to-day, and isratliur chilly, but this coblJ steamer meets it bravely and keeps steadily on her way, and vr'll land us at Memphis less than 24 hours out from Paducah. As she glides swiftly on not the slightest sensati r.i of motion is felt, and uot a sound is heard oxCs.pt the light rattling of the sky-lights when the wind is on her quarter. " We never Eaw a boat run so steadily or so noiselessly a great desideratum to persons porsessii'c sensitive nerves. We rt ached Memphisatl2M.,22 acda half houri from Paducah. y
