The foregoing strange interrogatoryI was amazed to find amoDg the pub- j lished, proceedings of the, Sunday i School Convection, in this city, of j Wednesday, April 2ud, :18G-?. The j auswerreturned to it was, " A little : of both." How true it is that from j .the sublime to the ridiculous there is but a single step. I propose to examine the question a, little. What, practically, Is the spirit of 1'ouDg Ameri-. ca? Ia, the , solution of the question,. .- oar , data must be its various-, ' visible manifestations. Respectable'' foreigners traveling among '. us, universally .complain of thus spirit, and regard it in all its manifold aspects as tiie very embodiment .of, eviL -Id-their enlightened estimation it is a social nuisance,- and when they leave us.to go home, they feel -a singular sense of relief that they have; really got rid of the hideous apparition forever, , and ard proportionably grateful. Judged from its appearances, the spirit of Youug America has the following .characteristics Srtuy - iadepeada-x . erant conceit, overflowing seUr3umciency, .aad. ..unlimited disrespect for everything really and truly respectable in usage, opinion, or character. It is social rowdyism and domestic rebellion. It is perverse, intractable, refractory, and recalcitrant. It is captious, willful, petulant, and contemptuous. Nevertheless, it is recommended that this amiable spirit should be inculcated in our Sunday School children! Lest the vigorous qualities of the spirit of Young America be too boisterous, too obstreperous, a mild infusion of the spirit of Old JLogyism is also recommended. The two combined in well adjusted proportions, it is considered, will produce an admir able compound, equal to all the de- ! mands of progressive and aggressive Christianity, as verjuice and honey, properly compounded, make a pleasant beveraee. How supremely ridiculous! If it be the intention of Sabbath Schools to improve the minds, refine the manners, and purify the hearts of the scholars, the teachings of the Sacred Scriptures are : certainly admirably sufficient for. the accomplishment of the work; but where in that sacred book do we find the slightest sanction for the inculcation of the spirit of Young America? The Scriptures themselves are the very quintescence of what popular prepossession considers Old Fogyiim. The spirit of Young Heaven was pride, and every Sunday School child knows something of its legitimate culmination. The spirit of Young Anything is verily impatience of salutary restraint, and opposition to wholesome training; and it is the same wherever found. Experience and instruction, knowledge and discipline, repress, re-strain and correct it. Obedience, meekness, docility, dill-irenee and humility, a;e among the old fbgyish virtues inculcated in the Sacred Scriptures ; but do they in the least comport with the vicious, spiteful, disobedient, contentious and contemptuous spirit cf Young America? The sages of the world have ever, both by precept and example, enjoined and inforced the inculcation of those virtue, but we, while 'pretending to practice their teaching, make a sortv farce of the whole matter, llobert Kaikes, the worthy founder of Sunday Schools, never contemplated that his great institution would descend to the work of encouraging and cultivating any but the pure spirit of Christ Jesus, who so sublimely and pathetically f aid, ' Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not, for of such is the Kingdom of Heaven;" and in his holy love for the innocent and helpless of the earth, he said something of the propriety of attaching a mil!tone to the necks of those who attempted the perversion of" the youthful heart. Our Sunday Schools are well calculated, when properly managed, to make our children better, wiser and happier; and all obstructions, therefore, to the work of preparing children for a virtuous and useful life here, and a happy immortality hereafter, should be Temoved and their re-introduction forbidden.- To this desirable end, the means are knowledge, common sense, kindness, and faithful dilliPenV?; , i,he sPlrit ": Youna America, or Old Fogyism, or a n.insling of both, is an obstruction to the advancement of the Sunday School cause, and should not be encouraged. Our Sunday School teachers deserve credit for their zealous industry, and for their personal devotion to the great cause of the moral amelioration of the rising generation; but when they undertake to iuculc:ite any other spirit than the true sp'rit oV Chri.-t:auity into the minds and heart's of their scholars, they transcend their commission, and degrade their high vocation.
