Orders left with either ot the .wharf-boats will be promptly attended tc. Wfdtbfr mill Wr. Yesterday was one of the mo9t delightful days we have had this season. Th weather was beautifully clear and balmy an Excellent day for vegetation and for business. The river rose about eight inches during the twenty-four hours ending at 3 P. m. yesterday. It will probably have come to a stand and commenced to fall before this morning. It is falling at all points above. Arrival nnt leirt ore. The arrivals and departures up to 'three o'clock yesterday include the Goldfinch, from Clarksville; Armada,
from Cairo to Newburg and return; Mollie Norton and Newsboy, Hen derson to return; Darling, Memphis to Cincinnati; Ollie Sullivan, from the Wabash. Boats lnf. Among the first boats due here are the Champion, for St. Louis; Havana, for Nashville; Silver Moon, for Memphis; Clifton and Sam. J. Hale, from Memphis; Indiana, Belle Lee, J. II. Groesbeek and Richmond, from New Orleans; Dexter, for New Orleans; Louia, from Wabash Hiver; Quickstep, from Cairo; Ada Lyon, from Green River; Tarascon, from Louisville; J. P. Webb and Linton, from Clarksville; Sam. Orr, for Eastport; Rob Roy, from Cincin nati. Miferellaueotis. Business , wa i quite active on the levee yesterday The Goldfinch had ' over 100 hogsheads of tobacco and a great deal of miscellaneous freight.. .....The Armada had 91 hogsheads tobacco, 30 bales cotton, considerable miscellaneous freight and the best passenger trip that ever came to this wharf on a boat of her class The Darling had an excellent trip of freight and people ...The Ollie Sullivan had a good trip from the Wabash. She returns to that stream to-morrow The Chattanooga was receiving liberally yesterday for the Wabash. She is one of the best boats in the trade, and Capt. Scott is a veteran and popular officer. The Fanny Brandeis was adding largely to her trip The Cumberland was getting an excellent trip. Capt. Win. Hollcroft, one of the most popular officers and a most estimable gentleman, takes command of the Dexter this - trip. She will be here to-day, sure The Armada went up to Newburg yesterday for a large lot of freight engaged by Capt. Dusouchet last week The Mayflower has gone to St. Louis to enter the Vicksburg trade. Capt. Gus. Lemcke, we are informed, takes charge ef the office. We hope she will do well, but wo are still of the opinion that by perseverance she would have built up a paying trade hence to Memphis. The people of Evansville will not be satisfied without a boat in the trade They had a rumor in Memphis on Saturday that the Richmond had been burned. We have no idea that there is a shadow of foundation for the rumor ..Duke Nichelsoo, late clerk of the Mayflower, arrived home by the Armada yesterday morning. He proposes to go into the steamboat agency business. Few men can command more freight than Duke, and the boats wiU be fortunate that secure his services. Boats Lf hi lug Twdwy. For Cairo. The splendid Armada, Captain Gus. Dusouchet, will be the unrivaled packet for Cairo and all way landings at four o'clock to-day. Her pa-senger appointments are complete. Will. P. The Dexter is faultless in all her appointments, and' is famous for her. speed. Captain Montgomery being sick, Capt. Wm. Hollcroft, late of the St. Charles, and one of the mostefficient and most popular officers in the world, will be found in command, with those sterling gentlemen, Messrs. Frank O. Smith and Arthur Field, in charge of the office and the freight department. Get ready for the Dexter to-day. (J lean lag-is Irwin oar KxeliHuireM. Cincinnati. The Commercial of Sunday says: While the Leopidas, destined for St. Louis, was in the act of lowering her chimneys, at the wharf at the foot of Broadway, last evening, preparatory to passing under the bridge, they fell with a tremendous crash. One was broken in two, and the other badly damaged. Capt. Shedden immediately ordered a new pair from Dumont and will remain here with the Leonidas until their completion. Cincinnati. The f7azee of Monday says : The Lady Grace was tbwed to the wharf yesterday to receive for EvansvilleJ She is intended for the Evansville and Cannelton trade, as a regular packet. Miller's Patent Steam Fire Box, first tested on the Emerald, and then on the Louisville, has been removed from the latter steamer because it did nof give satisfaction. The Fanny Brandeis. for Nashville. also had a fair trip, but at low prices. Ane Havana is now the only boat re ceiving for that point. Our information on the subject is that the Brandeis had her load nearly engaged before competition and cutting down commenced. Louisville. The ' Courier, ' of Monday says: The Nightingale, in lowering her chimneys to pass under the bridge at Cincinnati yesterday, dropped one on the pilot-house. She will have the necessary repairs made here. IheLora is., tired of waiting for something to turn up here, goes to Cincinnati to load for the Arkansas River. Memphis. The Avalanche of Sun day says: Weather cool and cloudy. The river has risen six inches in the past twenty-four hours, and a foot ud to last eveniDg since Thursday. White River ia slowly swelling, with a big stage in the river. The Arkansas is rising, with eight feet from Little Rock out. Heavy rains are reported along the extremes of the Arkansas, and a freshet in that stream is anticipated. We see it announced that Charley Clark, so long connected with the Louisville Courier, has retired from the riverjeditorship and been succeeded by Mr. Henry Underwood, a young gentleman who has filled other positions on the Courier for the past year or .two. We understand that he is eminently competent and worthy to carry on the liquid department. The Avalanche has the following relative to the burning of the St. PatThe officers of the boattat all their clothing; the clerk, Mr. Alex. Stewart, had just finished balancing hia books, all of which shared the same fate, together with a trunk filled with elothiDg, belonging to Captain J. B. Archer, her commander, who intendT -..tj.J.n ed removing it yesterday. . , The St. Patrick was built in 1503 , for the Cincinnati and Wheeling trade, at a cost of $08,000. Soon afterward Captains J. B. Archer and Ed. R. Hart purchased her for the Memphis and Louisville trade, for $35,000, which she entered under command of Captain George O. Hart, remaining upward of a year. She also ran a short time in the Memphis and Vicksburg trade. Last year she was purchased by Captain Mike Pyne, of this city, for
too,iw; fia,uju more were spent in repairs, while in the Vicksburg trade last sPfisonTcatising her to "cost ''"huh
$30,000 altogether. About three months ago she entered the Memphis and .Lvansville trade. Captain J. Is Archer in command : but withdrew a couple of weeks since, and then made a trip to White River in place of the Commercial. She has generally been regarded as an unlucky packet, but made money while commanded by Captain -'. r. Archer. She was in sured for $22,000 in St. Louis compa nies: The fire was undoubtedly the re eult of incendiarism. It originated in the upper woiks, aft the wheel house; and although two watchmen were aboard, the names were not dis covered until they had attained too great headway to be extinguished 1 he incendiaries doubtless approach ed in a skiff, and as stealthily left be fore their presence could be detected The work was undoubtedly performed by some of the enemies of" the owner, who ha.s had two establishments one in the city and one in the country burned by incendiaries during the past eight months.
