Montgomery is her magnificent and popular commander, ard Frank O. Smith and Arthur Fields are her unrivaled clerks. Trade in the vicinity of the lauding was active. , Shipments continue heavy to most points. Travel to the West is steadily increasing Missouri being generally the eenter of attraction. Cincinnati. TheGazette of Thursday says : The Clifton left for Memphis last evening, with a good trip of freight and a splendid list of passengers. It is said that more ladies, children and invalids travel on the Clifton than on any other boat that leaves this wharf. Captain W. G. Coffin assures us tbat he will have another boat in the Tennessee River trade during the early part of next week. The Rob Roy, having got 65" her regular day last trip, will not leave here for Evansville before next Tuesday- . . Louisville. The Courier, of Thursday, says: On the falls there were nearly 20 feet steamboat water last evening and tailing. There is one fact which is very evi dent to all of our community, having business with steamboats, and that is. that the amount of tonnage at present afloat upon the Mississippi River and tributaries is largely in excess ol the demand. The Journal says: A convention of steamboatmen will be held in this city next week, at which important questions will be considered. : St. Louis. The Democrat of Thursday says: Business hence to all points, par ticularly upper rivers, brisk. Receipts uniformly heavv. Prosnects of a heavier business Westward every year hereafter, because ot the rapidity with which the country west of us is filling up with people. River declining here. Upper rivers declining. Ihe Missouri is now in the list ot tailing rivers, although rising for some time past. eather warm and damp. At the wharf there is no boat room. It is all more than occupied, and there are many boats due. Memphis. The Avalanche of Wednesday says: Weather warm and sultrv. The River here declined oue inch in the past twenty-four hours. At Cairo and St. Louis the river is receding steadily. The Arkansas is receding steadily, with five feet in the channel. White River is declining, with a good "stage for steamboat purposes through to Jacksonport.
