The indications are favorable for rain. The river was rising steadily yesterday.having risen nearly two feet during the twenty-four hours ending at 3 o'clock yesterday. It will doubtless continue to rise for a day or two yet. It lacked yesterday less than six inches of the last high water mark, and will hardly fro above it There was an unusually large amount of drift afloat yesterday, diffused all over the surface of the water. Among the first boats due here are the Anna, for St. Louis; Havana, for Nashville; St. Patrick.from Memphis; Louisville, Indiana, Dexter, Alaska and Richmond, from New Orleans; Westmoreland, Nick Longworth and Louisiana, for New Orleans; Zanesville and Louisa, from Wabash River; Peoria City, for Missouri River; Quickstep, from Cairo; Nightingale, from St. Louis; Emma Floyd, from Nashville; Sam Orr, from Eastport; Linton, from Clarksville; Morning Star, from Lotiisville. Mlncellnneous. Yesterday was one of the dullest days we have had on the river for many weeks. There was not a single arrival outsida the packets up to 3 o'clock The Lewellin was receiving liberally, and would doubtless get a big trip The Moilie Norton was also receiving liberally Very little Cairo packet freight had made its appearance up to noon, but that is not unusual We noticed large lots of Greeu River freight in front of the various wholesale houses The I'ine Grove expected to leave j last evening As will be sceu, Capt. They go to New Orleans on a pleasure trip Capt. Sam. Montgomery telegraphed Messrs. Morehead & Co., of Louisville, on Monday, from Vicksburg, as follows: " Steamer Dexter's time from New Orleans to Natchez 19 hours and 10 minutes; to Yickgburg, 29 hours and 20 minutes The large transportation barge James Good, left here by the Charleston, was being unloaded yesterday. She had 1,000 barrels of salt for L. Ruffner, Jr There was a great deal of drift running yesterday, much of it heavy. BMl I,nt liK To-day. Foa Caiko. The fleet and elegant Quickstep is the unrivalled packet for Cairo and all way landings at 1 o'clock to-day. She is replete with beauty and comfort, and of great speed. Capt. II. T. Dexter is her experienced and popular commander, and Jack Grammer, assisted by Nick Pennington and Charley Uimsnider, is her chief clerk. All are proverbial for their courtesy. For Louisville. The famous Morning Star will be the splendid packet for Louisville and all way ports to-day at C P. M. Capt. Elijth UolKfuft is her excellent and estiniible commander, and John Ouerbacker is her popular and courteous clerk. Dick IIutchiuon, one of the best freight clerks afloat, has charge of the freight department. Everything is COmf'-'rUb'e on board the Morning Star. For Henderson. The Mollie Norton, an e'egaut side-wheel steamer, leaves for Henderson at 3 o'clock. Captain Charley Perkins, and Ed. and Robert Terry are her popular officers. The Newsboy, with pleasant accommodations, goes to Henderson at 31 o'clock to-day. Captain W. H. Sheffer and Willie Huston are the plea-ant geutlemen in charge. For Wabash River. The J. P. Webb may positively be expected today from Cincinnati en route to the Wabash River. She is one of the Lest boats that ply in that stream,

The net staunch side-wheel steamer Westmorland will be here early to-day en route to New Orleans. She has first-class passenger appointaients. Capt. The Commercial of Tuesday says : The recent sheriff's sale at New York of the steamers of the New York xUaii oteamsnip uompany anoras a striking illustration of the depressed condition of the American steam ma rme, and the depreciation of steamship property. The Guiding Star was sold tor $177,000 to Win. H. Webb for his California line, the Morning Star for $25,000 to C. K. Garrison, the Monterey, with coal on board, for $t2.000 to C. K. Garrison, and the Mariposa for $56,000 to H. B. Crom well, lhese were all fine steamers and used only a lew years, costing as follows: Guiding Star $500,000. Morn ing Star f 4X),000, Monterey $250,000, and the Mariposa $200,000. The Rising Star was eold over one year ago to the Pacific Mail Steamship Company for about $000,000, and the Merrimac and Mississippi for about $100,000 each to C. lv. Garrison. The Courier, of Tuesday, says : On the falls last evening there were nearly 20 feet water, the highest stage we have had this season, and the river slowly swelling, with the impression that it came to a stand to-day. We learn jrom private dispatch that the Dexter s time from JNew Orleans to .Natchez was nineteen hours and ten minutes, and to Vicksburg twentynine hours and twenty minutes. The Dexter left New Orleans Sun day eve nine. St. Louis. The Democrat of Tuesday says: The river is declining rapidly at this point, with high tide to Cairo, arM liberal water to all points above. Rising at Dubuque on Saturday. Weather warm and clear. Business animated on the wharf. No change in freight rates. The levee is crowded with boats; some cannot reach the bank without waiting and powerful squeezing. Freight and passengers are abundant for the Missouri. The Missouri boats are getting excellent down trips. Some of the recent departed mountain boats had quite large freights. The Kountz line is receiving large quantities of government freight. The Carrie left on Saturday with over 200 tons, and the Penirah was getting yesterday all she wanted.
