' The water is encroaching somewhat on the levee already. There is a good stage of water to Cairo and in all the upper streams. River business is quite lively, and the rates of freight and passage very moderate. The, steamboat competition in the Keokuk trade is very spirited. The rates to New Qrleans continue un
changed from 20 cants per -barrel for flour, and other articles in proportion.
lwo steamboats lett last night with
an aggregate or about .J,H'0 tons; nothing has been done toward increas
ing the rates. beveral mountain steamers have nearly full engagements
made. The first boats will leave on
Saturday or Sunday. There will be
big water in the Lower Mississippi
shortly, as the Ohio and tributaries
are booming. The Upper Missouri pwell is away below St. Joseph. The Upper Mississippi is open above and below Lake Pepiu, which always remains closed with ice longe" than the balance of the river. The Southern Belle's chimneys were blown down on Monday night. We heard of about twenty similar slight accidents, not worth particularizing. The report industriously circulated of the Great Republic being burned, has no foundation in fact.
