The mercury, at 7 a.m., stood at 20, and 40 at noon. The river had risen about eight inches daring the twenty-four hours ending at 3 o'clock yesterday, and was nearly stationary. As it is rising rather rapidly at Louisville andCincinnati,we may count on a considerable additional rise here. The ice is very light and scarce, and but little, if any, new ice will be formed unless another severe cold spell sets in. Arrivals and lpsrlare. The arrivals and departures up to 3 o'clock yesterday include the Bertha, Cincinnati to Arkansas River ; Tempest, Memphis to Louisville; Pine Grove, Cincinnati to Nashville; Mayflower, from Newburg; Mollie Norton and NewEboy, Henderson to return. jBont Dae. Among the first boats due here are the Emma Floyd and Nightingale, for Nashville; Shamrock, for St. Loui3; St. Patrick, from Memphis; Minneola, for Memphis; Dexter, Alaska, Emma No. 3 and Louisville, for New Orleans; Cumberland and Quickstep, from Cairo; Belle .Lee, Virginia and J. II.GrOesbeek from New' Orleans; Tarascon and Morning Star, from Louisville; Sam.Orr, from Eastport. Miscellaneous. The river yesterday at two o'clock was almost clear of ice, and no further anticipations of trouble from that source need be indulged. Business was pretty dull on the levee, with no arrivals to signify up to three o'clock The Bertha, for Arkansas River, paesed down before day. ' light, and the' Tempest, from Memphis, passed up, both with good trips. The Mayflower returned from Newburg with considerable freight, and was receiving pretty fairly here. She would not get a full trip here, but will probably be able to fill out below. In order to make expenses at 'present rates, boats are obliged to overload, and thus lose time The P. "W. Strader put up her new chimneys hero, and will not get off till to-day. She took down the stumps yesterday, and a large force was bu?y ou the work .The cotton on board the Armada goes to Foster, Gwyn & Co. New York, by the great Erie Transportation Line The James Gray is still on the wharf, but a rise of eighteen, inches or two feet will probably let her off. A dispatch from Capt. J. B. Archer to ' Capt. Budd announces that the St. Patrick would leave Memphis last night for this port, with 1,600 bales cotton. Look out for your horns, Silver Moon and Sam. J. Hale t " , Boat JLeavlntf To-Iay. Foa Cairo. The splendid fleet Armada, Captain Gas. Dusouchet, will be the regular and unrivalled packet for Cairo and all way landings, at 4 o'clock to-day, and is deservedly a great favorite with the public. Wra. P. Fowler and George Nichelson are her elegant, polite and popular clerks. For Locisville. The flying, fleet favorite Tarascon, the queen of the Louisville & Henderson Line, will be the unrivalled packet for Louisville this evening. Captain A. T. Gilmore is her experienced commander, and Miles D. Warren, a gentleman of exalted ability and superior eourtesy, is her accomplished clerk. For Grekx River. The famous Ada Lyon is expected to resume her place in the Evansville and Green River trado, to-day, and will leave at 6 o'clock for Woodbury and all waylandings. Captain Alf. Edwards assumes command, John Adams is her excellent clerk, and Captain Graham takes the wheel, and is a star pilot. The Ada Lyon is a favorite packet, and her officers are obliging gentlemen, and deserve a liberal patronage on the part of the merchants and shippers of Evansville. For Hendsssox. The Mollie Norton and Newsboy leave as usual at 31 o'clock, 'with ' excellent' accommodations and obliging officers. ' '; ' For New Orleans. The new and splendid steamer Alaska, Capt. Frank J. Oakes, with the renowned Billy Voris in the office, goes to New Orleans to day, and her officers will be

Cant, bdudk is a veteran omcer and a pleasant gentleman.. Mr. Bruce, a gentleman of the old school, and genuine philosopher, is her attentive clerk. ; ,. r ;,. - ' For Green River The J. R, floyle will return to Green River this evening. She is a fast boat, and her officers are obliging and clever. For New Orleans. The beauti ful P. W. Strader, one of the fleetest, staunchest and most finely appointed boats on the Ohio, unavoidably de tamed, will positively leave at an early hour to-day for New Orleans, in charge . of those careful and ex perienced officers and highly accom plished. gentlemen, Captain Albert Stein and Ames Fisher. She should have all she can carry.. For Eastport. The gay Lewellin, Captain J. L. Davy, with W. Pittsburg. The Commercial of Wednesday says: : The weather yesterday waa cold. Several boats were receiving and ex pect to get off to-day or to-morrow unless, toe weatner enouia Decome colder. The Leonidas came back to the landing to take a fresh start. Cant. Shedden expects to get off to-day. We hope he will not be disappointed. Cincinnati. The Commercial of Thursday says: - The river was full of very heavy floating shore ice yesterday, occasional cakes reaching almost from shore to shore. About 3:30 p. m. a huge field moved down, and hugging the Ohio shore, came in contact with the Spray, lying at the foot of Ludlow Street, and crowding her hard down on the Swallow, just below; the Spray's larboard fan tail was broken off, and one of her cylinder timbers damazed. The same ice crowded out on the Kentucky shore, above the bridge pier, one of Shinkle's barges. We oould hear of no other damage by the ice in this vicinity. The towboat Alex. Chambers was sunk at Pomeroy. Owing to heavy ice and extra hazardous risk, the underwriters yesterday refused to insure the Amazon's freight list at less than Z per cent., the customary rate beine 1J per cent. , . Com. Winslow, U. S. N., who commanded the Kearsarge when she cleaned out the pirate Alabama, will visit this city in a few days. Ha is to preside over the Board of Survey on Gunboats at Mound City The veteran Captain David Iliner returned from Washington City yesterday, having had an interesting interview with Andrew Johnson and his old naval associate. The President complimented Captain Hiner on his personal resemblance to Andrew Jackson. Capt. W. B. Donaldson, of the Great Republic, passed through this city, on Tuesday, en route for Pittsburg. , Louisville. The Journal of Thursday says: v The floating ice in the river was quite as thick and heavy as the day previous. Several steamers arrived at this port yesterday from above. New Albany. The Ledger says: The Evansville Journal, a few days ago, cackled over the fact that the rteamer Empire, which blew out a cylinder head below, that city, did some repairs at that point. She was ice bound there, and in order to lose no time the repairs were ordered done there. The Evansville steamer Phantom has sent her shaft here three times to be welded by our mechanics. It reached here this morning on the Morning Star for the third time, and has been broken that many times in differeat places. It must have been made at Evansville, or else it would not have broken so easily. The Phantom's shaft has been sent to New Albany but twice to be mended. Nor did it break in a new place each time, but broke the last time just where it did before, and where the New Albany mechanics had attempted or pretended to mend it. The work was not half done. St. Louis. The Democrat of Thursday says: The weather has been for two days past very favorable to the breaking up of the ice, which is expected to take place within forty-eight hours, providing that such thawing weather as we had yesterday continues. Men who have considered the matter carefully, are of the opinion that a great destruction of the steamboat property in this harbor will accompany the breaking up of the ice. From Cherry Street to the Arsenal there are thirtynine exposed steamers, besides barges, ferryboats, wharf boats, and ferry landines. The river was stationary last evening. It will soon be time fofj us to have a rise like the one the Ohio has just had. The layers of ice attached to the underside of the ice gorge in the upper harbor, have been floating away in

It was seen with regret, that the ferryboats were driven up the bank of the river, foot by foot; they availed themselves of ' .the Memphis and the Atlantic wharf boats nearly the whole day, loading and "unloading. lbe scene at both ; w hart boats was very exciting. . Down the Bteep wharf rush wagons, and men and horses; two wagons become locked and madly rush towards the too narrow gangway, one geta on and the other tumbles off, with the driver struggling on the ground among the horses' feet. Men are shouting and cursingj and blue-coated policemen almost in vain struggle through the excited mass with uplifted batons and passionate faces. ; The- Lady Gay's wheel is being stripped, as a precaution, against injury by ice. - Memphis. The Avalanche of Tuesday eays: , Weather cold and inclement,' with a snow storm which lasted all day. The river is declining steadily, with eleven feet over the bars to Cairo, White River is falling, with six feet in the channel to Augusta. The Arkansas continues at low tide, with thirty inches in the channel to Little Rock. : The wharf presented a gloomy and quiet appearance yesterday, with little movement in freights. Shipments for the Ohio are restricted on account of the ice, with little cotton offering for New Orleans, owing to the scarcity of money needed to move it. The weather was cold with snow, which caused levee rats and draymen to seek more genial quarters. . STEAMBOATS.
