The shaft was broken short ; off in the follower, on the larboard H side, and the follower was also broken. ' ; She came down with the use of one ' engine, but made all her landings and attended to her regular business. The Ollie Sullivan takes her place, i and was to leave last evening, with the crew of the Ada Lyon. The shaft will be mended here by Schultze, Thurman & Co., of the Mechanics' Foundry ..The Stella, which has i been lying here several days patching . one of her boilers, steamed off up the river yesterday in fine style The 5 Atlantic transferred all her freight to one barge, and took the empty one to a corn pile a few miles below the city, and, after returning, took the other to the mouth of Green River to transfer the Ireight to the Michigan and barges, by which it will go above....... ..The J. R. Hoyle came in at one o'clock from Green River, with a slim trip. She expected to leave again last night ...The Mayflower was receiving quite liberally, w having brought large orders to be filled by our merchants, who were kept busy getting the goods ready. We are glad to see our merchants and shippers disposed to stand by our own 5 packets. It is the true policy if ' we would build up a heavy trade with the South., A significant and sensible article relating to this subject, clipped from the river columns of the 1 Louisville Democrat of Tuesday, will j be found on the 8th page of the , Journal this morning ...The Arl mada was getting a good trip, as she ! always does. Jno.Ouerbacker; one of the most honorable gentlemen afloat, is her passage clerk, while Jesse Jackson gay and genial Jesse is her freight clerk, and is always attentive, accurate, and obliging. She is iron-clad, and laughs the ice to scorn. - (I-rdIiis from oar Exchange. Cincinnati. The Commercial of Tuesday says : The Sherman, burned at Evansville Sunday morning, is insured for $15,000 $2,500 in the Boatmen'sof Cincinnati, and $12,500 in Pittsburg offices. Parties in Covington, Indiana, are building a small steamer to ply the Wabash, between Terre Haute and Lafayette. It will be built so that it can run through the low water season. Louisville. dav says : On the falls, last evening, there were scant four feet water in the pass down the Indian chute, and falling. In the harbor, the ice was forming fast, yesterday, with a solid field of it at the head of the canal, and good skating on the river opposite the Point, between the Towhead Island and the main shore. Navigation above the falls may be considered as virtually suspended, with but one arrival yesterday.the Emperor, from Cincinnati. She came early, and took the canal chute, bound or Memphis. The rcmilboat, General Buell, was in port, but was not sent' out, as the bi-t America, which had started Sunday evening, had hardly reached Madison yesterday morning. She would only try and go as far as the mouth of the Kentucky, succeeding in which, she was expected to harbor there until the ice disappeared, or. the weather moderated. " The United States mailboat hence for Cincinnati, Saturday, was cut through by the ice, and she did not return. , Mthough the weather is only moderately cold, barely three degrees below the freezing point all day yesterday, it appears that it has checked navigation, and the ice is reported as hard and sharp as flints. We think, however, that the iron and wood of the steamers is softer than it used to be in old times. We remember the time the Telegraph "No. 2 went from Louisville to Wheeling with the thermometer nearly to zero, and having, for miles and . miles, to break through ice that was strongenough to bear a laden team. We have had nothing like it this Winter. Mr. Wm. Williams, a well known pilot, his license extending from Utica to New Albany, Ind., a falls pilot, died in this city Sunday night. He leaves a wife and seven children. His disease was dropsy in the chest. The Journal says: The ice has come to a halt in front of the city wharf, from the mouth of the canal up. The Pink Varble and Norman are closed in with new-made ice, and the Major Anderson, Frank Pargoud, and the towboats Peytona and Webster are hemmed in entirely, the running ice having lodged against them and frozen tight. Vincennes. A correspondent of the Vincennes Sun, giving some reminiscences of the ancient borough, says : In 1828 the Wabash, rose to an unusual height, and Catlinette Prairie was overflown to a considerable depth. The rise was somewhat sudden, and the inhabitants of the low grounds below town were compelled to move in town." AH the water crafts that could be obtained were brought into requisition to move the people to high lands. Keelboats, flatboats, piroques, skiffs and canoes were manned, and after the people were brought to safe quarters, the boats continued to ply back and forth, bringing horses, cattle, sheep and hogs out of the sea of waters. It was late in the season, the weather getting cold, and there were much suffering and loss of property. The river was high in the evening, and during the night took another upward movement; some who endeavored to get breakfast on the following morniug failed, because of the watar putting out their fires before they could accomplish it. When the canoes and skiffs-were no longer needed for the rescuiog of property from the flood, they were manned by the boys, and used in picking up rabits and other game from the floating chunks and logs on the opposite side of the river.
