' - VJ The Weather. The oldest inhab'-"" itant has seldom seen a more pro-' rielel term 4.has that t.hough whlhwe, are now passing or have just , passed. For tho last thirty days the mercury has not risen above the freez ings-point,- itbirty-tw 'degrees, even at noon more than four or five times being below that point every night and,' morning. ; 'There are' iaqw signs' of more moderate weather, but if the " ground hog " prognostication i3 Cor-;, reet, we are to have six weeks mor,t Wintarjweather. ' i X"i ' ' 1 m Last Sunday - was -Candlemas day upon which, it is said, the groundhog cpmes from Jjis Winter's burrow, and if he see" his shadow he 'returns to his snug quarters and remains six weeks longer, for' Winter to pass away. If the day is dark and cloudy, it is taketi for granted thathe, Win ter is over, and "groundhog ""remains out of his den. Last Sunday was clear, we believe, all day, and the grouudhog, n not Dlind, had no trouble in seeing his shadow. If persons skeptical on the subject of the groundhog's pre-science' or sagacity, will note the weather for the.; next six weeks, they may have their skep ticism dissipated or confirmed Absent Mr. Joseph S. Davis, the obliging agent of - the Adams Express Company in this city, was called to Ohio a day or two ago by the announcement of. the serious illness' of his mother; Mr. John L. Overmeyer, .the accomplished River General Agent, is filling his place temporarily during his absence. ''
School Districts The completion of the large new school building on Ninth Street has made it necessary to revise the school districts of the city, in order to fill up this new house. Six.hundred children had to be taken from the over-crowded rooms in the other houses and transferred to the Ninth Street School. This work has been done as fairly and judiciously by the. school authorities as was possible. Thef Superintendent, . after ascertaining the- residence of every child in'attendahce on the Public Schools, marked out the'Districts with all possible care, and made the allotment far -tile JsTiatK Street -house so as to equalize the attendance in the different buildiDgs and rooms. The rer districting was submitted to the School Trustees, and by them examined and approved '33 the best that could be done under existing circumstances. As such we think it ought to bo accepted by all parsats; and yet we hear that some, who do not think of the
trouble apd impossibilities iu the way offhe. gratification of their" wishes, express much dissatisfaction at the present method ot districting the city. We are satisfied that the Superintendent and School Board have done alL that it was possible, to do to avoid these inconveniences, and we bepe that all good citizens will quietly acquiesce in the changes; that have been made, It is unpleasant for children to be taken from under the instruction of teachers to whom they have become attached, and ' sent to new instructors and distant rooms, but it cannot be avoided " under existing circumstance:?. 1 -Ladies' .'Relief Meeting. Some four or five witnesses were examined on the part of the prosecution', while there was no evidence introduced on the part of the: defence. After hearing the evidence, the Justice rendered his opinion that the case had been clearly made out, but expressed jhe opinion that i"it was a Tkind of dirty, malicious prosecution," : and he should, therefore, fine the defendant one cent, and remit all the cots. The Prosecuting Attorney, not to be outdone in magnanimity, . remitted his fees, and .furnished, the defen dant a one cent postage stamp wherewith to pay the fine. Whea ' the ' witnesses spoke of their attendance,, the Justice remarked that if they c 'aimed their, attendance he would charge it upon' the doeket, but that ke would never collect it. Recorder's Court. The Council Chamber was crowded yesterday afternoon with a heterogenous assemblage, ail eager to hear the disgusting details of an expected trial of a number of " fallen angels," or reputed prostitutes. Warrants had been issued against nearly a "dozen of them, but only three or ! fo"uP pui id no' appearance. Geo. W. McBride aud Azro Dyer appeared, as ' the former announced, as representatives df the accused, and. desired that the trial of one of the principals should go on in her absenee. To : this unusual pro-cc-edure, Cof, Buchanan Attorney for the city, a3 well as the Recorder, obobjected. The distinguished Attorney' finally ' seai for his client, and, in the meanwhile, demanded a jury. This involved further delay, and finally the cases were all postponed until this morning. The charges against two of the parties are for keeping houses of assignation, of ill fame and prostitution, and against tte others for visiting, occupying and U3iDg.such houses for the purposes of
prostitution . From the parade of forces made yes terday, it is manifest that the lewd wtmerr-of- the city-with their fri-ends and. sympathizer J 'are .determined to make a .desperate fight for the mastery in the city,' and It is time that the friends o la,w,,oraer decency and morality should seriously consider' the situation, .and array themselves on the side of in oral iy and. decency", and insist that tTie'lafas foe fexecuted. A Great Contrast. At this time last year the execrations of the people were loud and deep, as weli as almost univer-al, against the condition of the wharf and Water Street, and these execrations were not without just caue. Theong series of rains that prevailed during January had rendered Water Street almost impassa
ble, and the wharf, what little of it was left by the rapidly swelling flood, was,in,na better condition, and the' engulphing of drays and mules almost out of sight, was no uncommon spectacle. The contrast now is great indeed. The street, finely! bowldered, is solid and dry, and the wharf well paved and in like eool condition. Whoti it i deemed prudent to remove f lie thia layer of gravel from the surface of the street and wharf, both will be at all times as clean almost as a well swept floor. . A Sad Bereavement. We are painsd to announce the death of Mrs. II. C. Hyde," which melancholy event transpired on Friday morning last, at Florence, Alabama. The remains ar-1 rived here yesterday morning by the Armada, and the funeral takes place to-day, a notice of ' which will be found elsewhere in to-day's Journal. The deceased was a daughter of Mrs. Sophia Gilman, of this city, and wife of II. C. Hyde, of (he firm of Greek & Hyde, Florence, Alabama. The deceased was a highly estimable lady; and her early death will be mourned by a large circle of frie nds iu this city. .
