Over SCO,000 have already been subscribed. O'Baldwln, the Irish giant, has challenged Jim Mace to fight him in thU counry for 53,000. Mace is shortly expected here, but it is not known if he will accept O'Baldwin's challenge. It is said to be probable that General Pope will send to Congress a list of rebels fit to be enfranchised, and that the Alabama State Convention wi 1 make provisions for such in the Constitution. The lormal transfer and delivery of Russian-America took place on the 8th of October, Major-General Rousseau 'being- the first to hoist the American flag. General Sherman is expected at Washington this week. Rumor has It that the Conseryatlves propose running him for President. A Florence dispatch says the Uuzetle published the textof the diplomatic note from Prime Minister Meuebreau, which declares that the suppression of the temporal power of the Pope is indispensable to the maintenance of good relations ketween J Italy and France. - . : ' Lato dispatches from Florence state lhat the note from Menabreau, Prime Minister of Italy, has had a very quieting effect. the adoption of a policy calculated to
invite the confidence of capital and impart a stimulus to enterprise and emphatically affirm a desire that "the whole policy of confiscation and disfranchisement for past political offences be abandoned, and all our people restored to their just and equal rights." We look in vain for resolutions of a similar character in the Democratic Conventions in the States of Maryland, Delaware, and Kentucky. Nothing but hatred to the negro is seen in them. No talk there about restoring negroes to their just and equal rights! ' We commend the spirit of the late Mississippi slaves to some who boast a superior civilization. Their example might be followed with profit. ' General McClellan is expected to arrive in New York on the steamer Scotia, which left Liverpool on the 2dinst. It is said that the homeward movement of the General has been hastened by the wish ot his friends to have him on the ground seasonably, to be put. on the popular track as a candidate for the Presidency.
Louisville. A more fitting place for
such a Convention could not be selected, unless it be held early enough in the season to justify locating it at New Orleans, where the delegates might have their enthusiasm kindled by a negro massacre, the murder of a few Abolitionists, or something1 of that sort. Next to New Orleans and Memphis we east our vote for Louisville. We desire that the rebel element of Kentucky shall have fair play in the Convention, and holding it at Louisville would secure that end. Locating the Convention in a Southern State will 'naturally suggest the propriety of selecting its . President from a loyal State. We nominate for that responsible position the Hon. Clement L. Vallandigham, sometimes called ' " Asa " Vallandigham. . rWith him as President of the Convention, and Pendleton or Seymoue as its nominee for President of the Un:ted States, everything will certainly prove lovely. "By all means let the Convention be held in Louisville.
A Scaxdalotjs Affair. The Rutland (Vt.) Herald says that on Thurs
day afternoon last Mrs. Jeff. Davis
was at that place, few route to Montreal, and put1 up at the Bardwell House. On her arrival the Copperheads of tbe: town brought out two brass field pieces and fired a salute,
land in the evening procured, a few
musicians, armed with cracked instruments (the best that, could be mustered far the time beiDg,) and serenaded the rebel's wife with the Con . federate national air of " Dixie." The Herald thus indignantly speaks of the affair: ;': '"' ';J ' "It is a burning shame that the consort, or her rebel mother, of the author of Anderssnville and Bella Isle should receive any marked tokens of respect or esteem among the green hills of Vermont, , especially when we remember how many of the sons of our noble , little State, sank down to untimely .graves in those prison pens and upon the bloody battle-fields of the, war for the Union, bre'ught about by the treasonable machinations of Davis and his coadjutors, aided, in a measure, no doubt, by the party whom the Hutland copperheads serenaded at the Bardwell
House last evening a party not one of whom was. ever known to contribute a dollar for powder or music with which to celebrate a Union victory over armed traitors." ,
