RI
From the present indications we think
we can assure i'uily fourfeet water outover tne bars ot tfce Lower omo. A the- Courier is the cntertan. we here state the fact that the lowest stage of water this s"ason was ua the 2oth of October. 1 hen there were twenty-five inches water in thecanai, by the biwk. The lowest stage or wier within our rf collection, and, we believe, the lowest ever known, was during the Summer and Fallot 1S5). Then tiie water wasexactlv two feet three inches lower at the toot of t he falls man at any time this season. We cite this as a.n indisputable fact. Captain L,oenart, .uperintenueni oi the canal has kept a daily record of the actual stage ot water at t he head and the foot of the falls for the past twelve years or more, and ov nctnai admeasurement on tne water sill at the foot of the tails or mouth of the canal he estah.ishes the tact mar. the Ohio m lsot was two feet three inches lower than at auy tira.e since. . - : . St. Louis. The Democrat, of Monday say: , Kiver about stationary here. The " uni versai sicy was troubled greatly yester day, and sent forth a halt hour's rain. We uon t look; lor yesterdays rain to cause a rise. St. Paul, on Thursday last , was still without rain. Very small steamers were required to make ibe trip to and from Hast ings, in connection wild tne oig ooats. Memphis. The Avalanche of Saturday says : w earner coot and cloudy. The river is declining steadily, with five ieet in the channel to Point Pleasant. White river is receding, witn three feet six inches to An gusta. The Arkansas remains low, with twenty-six inches t Pine Blutr. The wharf presented a dull appearance yesterday, with a small list of arrivals and departures. The Marietta Register of the 31st ult., gives the following sketch of Capt. Jesse Y. Hurd. who died a short time ago : Some of our readers may recollect Jesse x . iiura. who was in .Marietta as a student about the year ISS7, or perhaps it was in la-m. tie men nailed irom r ranklin fur nace, bciota County. January 30, 18b", Jesse Y. Hurd was Captain of the Louisville and New Orleans packet Missouri a first-class steamer. At that date a terrible explosion occurred on that ooat, near ing Mrs. Catharine Hurd, the wife of Capt. Hurd, also his son Henry, who was piiot ot the boat. A second son, Arthur, clerk of the boat, was dangerously injured, but recovered. Three days afterwaid, Feb. 2, iue . .-.ner expioaea, aoove V leszs. burst, killing its Captain, Jacob S. His father went for his remains, and the funeral toots place at riiiisKiuum-tneir resmenee on tne I7tn instant. Immediately afterwards Captain Jesse Y.
