Again .the painful duty devolves upon ns of announcing the death of one- of our former prominent and most "'highly'
esteemed citizens, and warmest personal friend. Capt. James T. Cox, of the firm of Cox & Humphrey, died in Memphis, of yel'low fever, on 'Friday evening. He was well known and universally esteemed , among river men, and greatly beloved by i i . bis friends everywhere. .' tr BoaM Leaving" To-Day.' " . .. Fob Cairo. The Commercial of Thursday says: Business along the landing was not very active, the river being too low. The light draft steamers are still making regular trips. The prospect for a rise is favorable. Ii(-patches from the Alleghany oil regions announce rain at the following points: Olean, Jamestown, Salamanca and Oil City. A rise during the week would be of ' Immense benefit to a large number of persons. The Improvements on this stream are about completed. The river will be open for navigation as soon as we have water. . Parties who ought to know speak in favorable terms of the manner in which the work has been done. Telegraphic dispatches from Cairo announce that the steamer Cbamplon.whtch left Cincinnati a few days since for New Orleans, bad struck a snag above Cairo, and was then discharging her cargo at that point, for tht- purpose of receiving necessary repairs. W e have no information as to the amount of damage. Cincinnati. The Commercial of Friday Bays: . The weather yesterday was mild and alternfiteJy clear and cloudy, with high wind - and indications of rain last night. At Pittsburg the river was rising yesterday, with 11 inches in the cbaunel. Here it is falling slowly, with 30 inches on the sboalest bars, bence to Louisville. After the departure ot trie Right Way, last evening, there was not a single steamer at the city wuarf,-between Broadway and Main Streets. Captain J. B. Weaver taken command of t the John Kilgour, in the St. Louis and :. . ' Hew Orleans trade. He left this city for St. Louis on Wednesday, , .'ALovisVille. The '.' Courier, of Friday, .i i says: : . ;" The river was slowly receding last even-- ' 'ing, with 28 Inches water In the canal, by . . the mark. During the previous 24 hours it '- '- had fallen an inch at the head of the falls, " '" and three inches at For; land. The weather was clear and rather warm all day, the ' thermometer ranging at 70. The mercury in the barometer was tailing steadily all the evening, an indication of rain lo-day. i In-the local columns of th Courier yesterdav the burning of the Ella Faber. In the canal dry-dock, w as announced. The Ella Faber had been put in the dock that day to be repaired by the Underwriters and about 8 o'clock at night she was discovered on fire. The water was let Into the dock from the canal, and that saved tbehull from destruction. The upper works y J were almost wholly consumed. The fire was , probably the result of carelessness or acrl- ' ' ' dent, but not the work of incendiarism. It ; originated in the - wash-house, in the after I i part of the cabin of tbt? boat, where the chambermaids had been washing and had a fire. It was supposed that fire had been dropped in the ash bucket In the room. One of the yonng men arretted is a -'" relative of Capt. Peckenpaugh, and was at the Louisville Hotel when the fire occurred and does not belong te the boat. The clerk of the boat is Mr. Patterson, who was not . on the boat at all at the time of the disaster. The young men under arrest prompt- '" ly gave ball ana were discharged. - St. Ix)Uis. The Democrat, ot Friday ' says: ' '.' - - . The business houses were closed yesterday for the Fair, in accordance with prevlous announcement. Business affairs on the wharf were consequently very quiet. The weather was pleasant. Several boats arrived with good trips of produce, and only five steamers departed. The river was declining slowly. We bear- of no further Improvement in the rivers above here. On the contrary, the navigation of the Missouri appears to be worse now than at any previous time this year. - The handsome steamer Mayflower, a ' stranger In these waters, but owned and commanded by an old St. Louis boatman. Is at the wharf, and will be off for the South this evening or to-morrow. Mr. Dunu is In the office. The Cairo special to the Democrat says: The second eugmeer of the Marble City died suddenly just before reaching Cairo. His remains will be taken to SU Louis. A drunken mau, apparently a deck hand, attempted to get on toe Luminary while landing here and fell overboard and never rose. . , The Milbrey brought 50 tons sundries for below, and abandons the Evansville trade and returns to the lennessee river. . Yellow Jack.. -Busikesi. Tbe week, opens very 'dull, and while the low water continues in the " old Mississippi " and its upper and lower tributaries, we may expect but little business uatil the "rivers rise," which we may confidently look for from the Fall rains usual at this season of the year.
