Editors Journal : We have been visited with the "plague. JEetiiot the citizens of your place flee their , homes.because it is purely local. On Saturday last a conglomerated mass of played-out politicians, draft sneaks, ' and Son of Liberty officers held a rousing, rip-roaring convention, at Winslow, in this county, and after having procured an ounce of asafoetida to keep off the ti queer, loathsome Emell, I repaired to ' the scene of action.' They came out, they did; and came, too, well supplied with the spirit and the platform of De- . mocracy, Old Pave Laird, the black- ' , guard who consoled the faithful last Fall, was advertised to speak; but Dave staid at home. Davy certainly ought to havVbeen there. The crowd would surely have suited him. In
one corner of the crowd we had an
old fashioned "hoe-down" or frolic,
in which an old nddle made a tre
mendem noise. " A grocery was close
by, and the " brethering " went oft to
get their spiritual strength renewed, and bad they just had a negro to
lather around, their joy would have
been complete. Col. Jim Barker, of
the hon. of Liberty Brigade, was out in flying color? ; and I firmly believe
he can look meaner than ever when
he says niggir, although he never was
excelled in that particular. 1 he patriotic, honest ex- Treasurer of Warrick
was there, and. Irom all appearances, - still forgets to pay the good people of
nis county -trie little Daiance 01 nine
thousand that he holds in their favor. Poor "SV," he has talked so much
..... about nigger that he has turned their
.color, and were the palmy da vs of
.slavery again upon us, he would sell verywtll for two thousand. The assembly, with some honorable exceptions, was undoubtedly the shabbiest set of ignoramuses ever assembled in . . our county. All you had to-do to get their enthusiasm aroused was to say "nigger" and repudiation. The ticket nominated is the best they could do, and the candidates are, personally, unobjectionable, but had the party ny hopes of success, true representa- '. tive men would have been chosen. - Our Circuit Court began its session
yesterday, and , Taylor . Basi.the jail
oira who oroie jan so ouuen, was convicted of horse stealing, and sentenced to seven years hard labor in the States Prison. We very likely will have four if not five ; representatives this Court. We received the sad news of the death of Judge Clements, of Washings ton, yesterday. Judge C' was just elected last Fall as our Common Pleas Judge, and although politically wrong he endeared himself to us by his honest, upright demeanor, in his impartial administration of justice, and we truly, feel like saying,, let the frave cover up every fault, and our earts cherish every virtue. A tear tj his memory. , ,, i X)ur CourUhouse is nearly complete to the top of the first story. '; ... We are still very dry for rain.)
