The fishing in the river in front of the "city id very fine'Just' now, and daily parties may be seen in skiffs; with line 'and 'fishing rod hooking silly catfish. A party out Monday evening caught more than they bargained for a good ducking. Sad News. River men and shippers generally will bo pained to Ie.ii u that Captain Washington, the famous steamboat agent and wharfboat pro prietor at Cairo, is seriously ill titul is not expected to live; Recovering J McBrown, who was seriously stabbed by Thos. Track oa Friday night, is steadily improvi.", and no doubt is bow -entertained of his recovery. Track, it is supposed, has fled the country. - ; " t T - Justice Walker's Court. N case of public interest transpired in Justice Walker's Court except that "Two souls with but a single thought, Two hearts that beat as one, " were united in those . happy chains dissoluble only by death, or the di voree laws of Indiana. Ripe Corn. The oflicers of the Phantom sent us yesterday samples of Tennessee corn fully ripe. . The ears are largeand the grain well matured.; The longest, ear" contains fourteeiT rows, with fifty grains in the longest.' row. With a good crop of such corn the people of Tennessee need entertain no fears of starvation" i . ri. . , i i". A S0LIBTETlTl6KF;Wetsaw,yey terday the petitionaddressed to the County : Commissioners, asking the erection of a bridge .across Pigeon Creek, near the Crescent City Springs, where, it will be remembered by our older citizens, - the creek was first bridged in this vicinity!. The names of the petition fill ' seven' pages, of "Legal Cap," and include that of almost every solid man 'in the city and vicinity representing eight or ten millions of the taxable property of the city and county. Backed by euuh a petition the Commissioners " have had a preliminary survey of the situation made, upon which to predicate an estimate of the costs, with specifications for the work. A strong reason urged by the petitioners is the 'fact that during the flood last Spring, the roads leading
from the FraDkirriTand lower bridges overflowed, cutting -oft" communications with the city from that side, except by the circuitous route via the plank road bridge., ' , - ? .
Busisess in the Citt, The air of activity in business circles in the city i is, truly gratifying to all who take an interest in tne prosperity ot Lvansville. -'When it is taken into consideration that the "business season " has not" yet' opened, our' merchants have much cause for eocotlragemint with, the liberal patronage they are already receiving," and it looked like old times,; in the months of March and "October, yesterday, to see the sidewalks in front of all our live wholesale houses,' literally piled, up with goods directed' to Mississippi, Alabama, Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky, HJinois, Indiana, and even Arkans. ' ..Dry goods, groceries, boots and shoes, hats and caps, hardware,: queensware,- notions, &c. all were represented---and wagon load after wagon .load, of 'sash, doors, blinds and flooring passed down Main Street, to the river. One gentleman alone, from Florence, Alabama, purchased over $8,000 worth of assorted goods here, which were shipped by the;Phantoni yesterday evening, and he was but one of the many. The fact is,' "the- abundant crops in those regions bordering" on the Tennessee River, have placed the merchants of that country in a position to purchase large stocks, and enables the planters and citizens generally to extend to the merchants a liberal patronage, and our merchants, for this reason, expect an unusually heavy business in a,ll lines this season. Withsuperiori stock, at . low prices, and with fair dealing, they are confident of not duly retaiuing the liberal trade heretofore revived iron that section, but of' largely increasing it, and at the same time' extend in oher directions their field of operations:' J-' Recorder's Court. There was a jrevVal of business in tae Recorder's Court yesterday,, and all the cases "seenjed to be of the same character druqks every one of them. Charles , Warner came first, and was finec $1, with 4 05 costs, whi'ch! she paid, like a ( little" man, and was bad go itt peace and sin no more. ' ".John Sha then approached the trir bunal, aud was charged $2 fine his beintr an aggravated case with 95 costs, which sum always includes board bill at Alex.'Darlrng's popular hotel. John does not pay a heavy income tax, and hence takes a contract on the streets at 60 cents per day, board included. . ; v . Sylvester Sullivan supposed to be no relation of Yankee Sullivan next answered for his folly, and wa3 fined $1, with $6 25 costs: He lost one or two meals ,atj(the " Castle,'.' probabfy. " Flowers, lovely flowers, ' ' In a garden you may fe" ;r. But of this kind was : not' Joseph "Flowers, who had been found on the street surrounding a large number of mean whisky.. He was a withered 3?"rer, with drooping-head and. lustreless eyes.. One, dollar fine r and $6 95 costs were the wages of his iniquityi which . sum Joseph started, to hunt up, in company with a police officer, wjth what success we have not been advised. , , . Court of Common Pleas. The larger portion of yesterday was occupied in the Common Pleas Court with the1' trial of a horse, case that elicited much iaievest," and attracted a large crowds versed' in horseo.logy.r'; The facts !set; forth. In the case were; that Richardson &- Day- had , borrowed a 1 horse! from Bowles &,f Burns to-as-sist ihem in" getting a lot of mules on board a?6teiamboat,' assuring 1 the owblers that they would be responsible for any da mages the animal might sustain while in' their possession. The horse , was returned J giving ' evidtpoel 6f"Eard usage sickened, and in a few days, despite tire eflWts and skill of a hoise doctor, died.- -The owners had, as they aver, offered to compromise for $75, which, being rejected, ihcy t bring ' suit for the full value Hf ' the horse. Which ' was . estimated . . at $150. ! The defence , was that the horse "was" not hardly used, but died through neglect of the owners, who failed to take proper carfTof him after he was Teturned. 'And "as a plea in abatement it was alleged that the horse was not worth $150, and that the owner had offered to take $75. Tried by a jury, Shackelford for the plaintiff, Denby for the defense. Verdict not ascertained. Another, case, was called in which the Attorney for the plaintiff undertook . to sustain his complaint by the testimony of one of the defendant.
but signally failed and agreed to a non-suit, and obtained leave to withdraw the papers, in ; order to .take a new start. -
