Still at Large. W. H. Boyng
ton, the great oil man, as he was wont to term himself, and the great bigamist, as he will henceforth be known, is still at large, and has, perhaps, succeeded in making his escape. It has been reported that he was seen crossing the Wabash at the dam above Mt. Carmel; that he had been seen fleeing towards the East, and again, that he had boarded the train on the O. & M. R. R., and was making his way towards the setting sun. Wherever he goes, he is henceforth a fugitive and a vagabond on the earth, and never again to have peace or rest. He will " see an officer in every bush," be startled by every footstep, while the upraidings of two dishonored women will poison his dreams, and render his sleep unrest. , Runaway. There was a somewhat exciting runaway on First and Main Streets yesterday niorniag, but which, fortunately, resulted in nothing worse than the smashing up of a buggy. A horse with a buggy attached, ran from somewhere on First Street to Main, and up Main, to the great consternation of the people, until the horse turned into the alley between First and Second, when'the buggy was upset and demolished, and the horse was stopped. Horses when left on the street should be safely secured. Ploughing up the Streets. Water Street, from Locust nearly to Main, was ploughed up yesterday to be graded, preparatory to bowldering. The portion of. the street below Main that has been graded and gravelled has become a very nice thoroughfare, and after having been used a month or two, will make a nice bed on which to plant bowlders. Going Home. The young German girl who was lured from her home in Pike County, by a villian, and found by her father in one of the dens of infamy that curse this city, has at the earnest pleadings of her father consented to return home. The officers of the law, yesterday, obtained her clothes from the vile den to which she had been lured, and it is to be hoped that the experience of the past will cause her to shun the tempter in future, and she may never cease to feel grateful to those who have rescued5 her from a life ofdisgrace, of wretchedness and infamy. Billy Barr at Terre Haute. By a special dispatch, to befound under the proper head, it will be seen that Billy Barr won the second race yesterday, for a purse of 50, over the Prairie City Course at that city in two straight heats, made 2:41 and 2:40. The entries for that purse were D. V. Brown's blk. g. W. H. Harper; T. P. Britton'sch. g. Billy Barr; Faucher's b. g. Canada Dan; V. Kent's, b. m. Belle Collins; J. W. Browning's g. g. Tom; J. D. Bell's b. g. Billy Greenwood; Owen Tuller's blk. g. Rob. and Joe. Kern's g. g. Eddy. For some reason, not stated, Billy Barr was withdrawn from the first race for the Buntin House purse of $100. Billy goes to-day for the Terre Haute House purse of $300, $230 for the first, and $50 to the second horse, in which there are six entries, and we hope Billy will bring it home with him, and to-morrow he goes for the National Hotel purse of $100, against the same horses. Large Sale of Railroad Lands. From a gentleman from Madisonvilie, who was in the city yesterday or the day before, we learn tint General Boyle has sold to Governor Bramlette and General Burnside the lands formerly subscribed as stock to the Henderson & Nashville Railroad, and subsequently purchased with the bonds as a portion of the assets of the road, for the handsome sum of $1,500,000. This, if true (and we have no reason to doubt it) will prove a valuable aid in the construction of the work. We learn that a large force is at work on the road, and that the friends of the enterprise i:: Kentucky1 are greatly encouraged, a d have great conSdeuce that the work, will be finished within the time designated by General Boj'le. New Way of Paying a Fine and Fee Bill. One of the dispensators of justice in th3 city, the other day, had occasion to assess a fine with costs against a female for a breach of the statute, in certain cases made and provided. Yesterday the Justice sent his constable to collect the fine and fees, and especially the fees. The defendant sent back to him a Sunday School ticket on which was a printed
motto. She had added in pencil, making it read as follows: "Friend J , Look into Jesus," &c. i The Justice thought t.he advice good, but doubt3 if h will get his fee from that source.
Some Excitement We were worried yesterday by the inquiry from a dozen different parties " Did you know that the Opera House had caved in?" Upon inquiry, we discovered that the back wall in settling, as all walls must, had slightly crushed the building adjoining, occupied by Ahlering & Hassler as a confectionery an4 ice cream saloon, bursting the glass in one show window. The, damaged building belongs to Dr. Bray, and the walb are thin, and the foundation not very solidly laid, and the massive walls of the Opera House in settling, catching a slight bight on the weak wall, very materially brought it down. The wall of the Opera House is beyond all comparison the heaviest and most solid in the city, and stands as perpendicularly and upright as a plumb line. The damage done is nothing more than the breaking of four lights of glass, and the necessity to refit shutters, and fill up a slight breach in the wall with mortar. The great and unresistable weight of the Opera wall may be in some measure appreciated by the fact that some of the bricks iu Dr. Bray's building were crushed like egg shells, or as a pigmy would be crushed in the hands of a giant. Many wild rumors were set afloat, but the facts are as above stated, and there is not a more solid wall on the continent than that of the Opera House. Race Yesterday. There was a race over the Longworth Track yesterday afternoon between two horses brought here from Henderson. We were unable to ascertain the umes of the parties making up the race or the names of the owners of the horses. The horses were ''Sue Muudy" ainl" Rebel;" mile heats, best three in five, for $100 a side. The race was won in the three straight heats by "Rebel." Time: 3:21, 3:121 and 3:12. There was but a small crowd present, and but little outside betting done. The time is not the best on record. Base Ball. By invitation of the members- we witnessed yesterday afternoon a practice gnueof Base Ball, that, nobie and exh:iavaticg exercise, as- piaj-ed by the Resolute Club, of this city. The grounds, which are immediately north of Blackford's Grove, are admirably adapted to the game, being spacious, level and smooth. A shed has been erected for the ue of the Club, and directly iu rear ot the batter and catcher is a stand for 'the accommodation "f !:v2ie sad other spectators. We kept aa accurate history of the game, which would, no doubt, prove highly interesting to most of our readers, but our space and want of time to write it out in detail, precludes its publication. There were a few ladies and a large number of gentlemen and boys present as spectators. The game was- not a match, but simply for practice, and while mauy exceeding fine battings were done on both sides, the fielding was rather indifferent, very few balls being takeu on the fly, and there was an unusual number of passed and muffed balls. Most of the outs were on foul balls taken on the 2y by the catchers. A few outs were made on base-?, anil one or two run out, while those who expired o;i bases were innumerable. But one home run was made, and that wa3 by Dr. Thompson in gallant style. There was a want cf system, and decidedly too many captains. This evil will ha easily overcome by practice and eare. We entertain the most s-tnguine hopes of the future history of this Club, and expect them to achieve much celebrity in the future. The following is a summary of the game, and we think it is catirelr correct. Capt. Horjan's si-le. j Cord. Byrnes' side. O. H.I O. ft. Great Xew England Remedy Dll. J. W. POLAND'S WHITE PINE COMPOUND, IS NOW OITKKr.n TO THE Afflicted throughout the eountry, after having been proved by the test of eleven yearn iu the New England Slates, where its merits have become hm well known m the tree from wU.eb, iu part, it derives its virtues. The White Pine Compound Cures' &re Throat, Colds, Courjhs, TiptJie- ' ria. Bronchitis, Spi'tiny of Blond and Pulmonary Affections generally. It is a Remarkable Remedy for Kidney Corplaints, Dialjttes, Difficult1! of Voiding Urine, Bleeding from the Kidneys and Bladder, Gravel and otlwr complaints. ' In November, l'v, I first advertised it under the name of White Pine compound. Iu two years from that time th-re had oeen wholesaled in Manehenier a lone one hundred thousand dollars' worth, where it took the lead of all the coii!ih remedies in the market, and it Still maintains that position. There are good reasons for this ; it is very soothing and healing In its nature, is warming in the stomach, and A pleasant wiihal to the taste, and is exceeding cheap. " As a remedy for kidney complaints the White Pine Compound stands unrivaled. It was not originated tor that purpose; but a person in using it for a coimh was not ouly cured of the cough, but was also cured of a kldne difficulty of ten years' standing. Since that accidental discovery, many thousands have u ed it for the same complaint, and have betm i-ompleteiy cured." THE WHITE PINE COMPOUND. "It was early iu the spring ot '52 that this comjMJund was originated.. A member ofmy family was alfiicted with an ii-i-llatiou of the til rout, attended with a dsugreeahle cough.. I had for some months previous thought that a preparation iiavlng f .r its basis the inside oar it of White 1'ine might be so compounded as to be very useful iu diseases of the Throat and Lungs. To test ; the value of it in the ca uliiideti to, ; compounded a small quautL y ot the medicine that I had been planning, and gave It In teaspoonful doses. The result was ex--ceedingly gratifying.' Within two days, the irritation of tlie throat was r-'tnoved, the cough subsided, and a speedy cure w:u j e-U'ecled. The above was writeu by Dr. Poland ir i 1). Since then, as in .aichester, th j White Pine Compound has Vikeu the leal of all cough remedies, as well as prepare ; tlonstor the cure oi kidney dirrli-ulttes, i: every city, town, village, mid hamlet , throughout the New Kngluui. states.
