A paragraph is going the rounds, that in the recent graduating class at West Point nine of the ten highest "awards were given to cadets from the Southern States. In reality, nine of the ten highest awafdawere' obtained by the ; Northern students, and the other by a Southerner. The Bostoir Journal says.it has good authority for tnis statement.

Shame upon such a partisan spirit. : : ... lirM.K ,lfThe International Monetary Convention was to have assembled in Paris last week. It is an important Convention, not only "from the subjects it has to discuss, but from tbe fact that of the sixteen Governments, jnyked, by -NAPoEtON to "participate," tie greater part will be represented, the distinguished Rouher .presiding. The main itiestinn wHl' " rTrmKfloaa K P -, -' --- t-1 V, htf-lnvention of a universal monetary system in the interest of the whole world. Not only is the diversity of treekoning money in civilized nations an unmixed evil, but inmany countries the method in. vogue is utterly absurb.' The unification of the monetary systems for all nations are greatly to be desired. ! And, when it is once decided upon, the best plan can easily be adopted. It is also a supplementary step to that change of weights and measures to the decimal system which is progressing the world over, and which the last Congress established for our country, to go into operation after a fixed future date. The New YprkViTtraZtfsince it has been recognized by high clerical au thority as one of the reb'giotts journals of that city, is discussing the propriety of opening 'i the Tw" ! York theatres, on the' Sabbath .'fof .'preach? ing.. t. It says it might appear singular tP have a religious service and a pious
sermon on Sunday, sandwiched in ber twee'n Iwcrrfortaanees of the Black Crook on Saturday and Monday; but probably the only way to redeem the character, of our theatres, and induce the people to visit them, is to hand them over to the saints. Such a radical hangej pf proprietorship , might effect a reform.
The destruction of the great carpet works at Hartford, last week, is really a national calamity." These were tbe largest carpet manufactories of; the kind ip the country . and employed oyer two : thousand workmen. The entire loss is " about one ; million and a quarter of dollars, which, folia almost entirely on the company, as the works were covered by but a small insurance.' He will be remembered by our citizens m a eejatner'inEvansville'tof some time during the war. s , :-: A CORRESPONDENT of the Petersburgh Tribune, writing from this city, and signing himself 4 Evansville," auggests that the " Evansville Journal ought tqbe very modest iu , the business of making Presidents, snce the bad luck it had in making Andrew Johnson what it did." The veracious correspondent also affirms that since Johnson turned the Journal man out of office and put a Copperhead in his place, the ,' JpcsnaL don't boast of having been the first to nominate Johnson. He winds up his insinuations by inquiring what we know of the political sentiments of Gen. Grant? The Journal has already tem jjered its'geal with discretion through the knowledge it gained by the infamous betrayal of the Republican party by iAndrew Johnson and has discountenanced thes discussion of the elaims of different individuals to the office of- President at this time. It Is also well known that the Journal repudiated ' Andrew Johnson long before one of its former proprietors was removed from the Post Office. It is farther understood that the course pursued by the JocRNAL-rof which Mr. James II. McNeelV was then a proprietor in 18C6, was the occasion of his removal six months after he had- disposed of his interest in the paper. We dare say, the Evansville correspondent of the Tribune is an eminently pious man, but he; should not bear ials'( Witness. There is-a commandment against it;.'.'',: ';n 'l',,";'"!" Incidentally, we have alluded to the fact (hat of all the men spoken of in connection with the office of President, Gen. Grant seemed t have the best' prospect of ssoteis But the Journal has never said that he ought to be the nominee of the Republican National Convention, or that any other aspirant was entitled to that honor. There is tim enough for all ; these things, and we see no reason . - why the party should be agitated by an untimely discussion of these questions. We dare say, that . theorres pondent of the Tribune; TKovLld ' desig-J nate another man tnan O rant, as he would have' nominated another than President Lincoln in 18G4. The Crops in Michigan.
