The organ of the dominant party may be considered as the leading institution of -this' class in bar State, and it may be interesting to your readers to know something of the brain power employed , thereon. Hon. Horatio Newcomb fills the position ' of editor-ln-cliTef. He is thoroughly posted Jn the political bistoryof the State and nation, a Presbyterian in religion, a Had. in politioe, logical and convincing in his etyle as a writer, but more remarkable for force than smoothness. Though a zealous partisan, he nevejr permits his zeal to get , thfi start of his

discretion, j , but,. r like a judicious navigator in y dangerous waters, allows his;:persoDal "convictions to pioneer at & safe distance his public utterances. v f Col.;W. R. -liolloway, an experienced journalist, is the managing editor. Ire hasihedixection and cqntrorof reporters ,anL correspondence, and wields the pen and cisors in the general news and miscellaneous . departments. Being a

man ox ex nausriess -energy, he infuses something of his spirit into all his subordinates. When occasion demands it, he can furnish a leader on short notice, and is equally at home in politics, commerce, news and fine arts. Acquainted with every politician in the country, from Cabinet or Senatorial magnates down to pot-house oracles; posted as to all factions and tings, he is an invaluable acquisition to a party organ. He is one of the few .locals who have been able to retain a shade of, modesty: for it is a well-known fact that the inevitable tendency of that position is to plunge one into the bound'ess abyss of egotism, where they are hopelessly lost in the labarynthian windings of vanity and selfconceit. Joseph Long, Esq., is in the utility line, and may be regarded as an indispensable member of the Journal editorial staff. ABOUT THE DIOCESAN ' CONVENTION Your readers have . already been furnished with reports of the more important proceedings of the Episcopal Convention, which held its 30th Annual Session here last week. This Convention will be memorable in the annals of the church, not less for the amount and importance of the business transacted than for the perfect harmony which characterized its deliberations and controlled its action. The writer, having been educated in the simplicity of Quakerism, retains enough of the effects of early training to engender a strong distaste for ceremonial pomp and ritualistic forms as connected with religious observances. He can, however, respect sincerity

and appreciate talent, and ' culture, and , is bound to admit that 1 the clergy assembled on this occasion, were a body of . men whose religious ieal, mental capacity andjscholarly attainments would reflect credit upon any denomination Of Christians, and are a promising augury for the future of; the Episcopal Church in this

Carver, at the laying of the corner stone of St. Paul's Church, was one of the strongest arguments ever delivered in favor of the catholicity of the Episcopal Church, and evinced a rare profuiiity of theological research. The Convention sermon by -Rev. The exercises incident to the close of the College year took place this week, and were of an unusually interesting character. The large number of students, their marked proficiency in the various studies assigned them, and their general good behavior, alike honorable to teachers and students, was especially gratifying to the patrons of school. I had not the pleasure of hearing the sermon of Dr. Rawlins, but I learn from others that it was one f his ablest efforts.1 To those who know
