EvansrIIIc, Henderson - Nashville Railroad Meeting. Gen. ' 1 1 Frame Building for Sale? The frame building heretofore used as the Journal offieeftfounting Room and. Book Bindery, is hereby offered for sale at a bargain. If not sold at private sale by Saturday, 'June 8th, it will, on that day be sold at auction, " Fashionable Opening. The ladies will see by reference" to "the advertising columns, that Mrs. Wagley's grand openiog of Paris millinery takes place to-day. Personal. Yesterday morning Mr. Ratlibone, President of the Evansville National Bank, left with his family for the East. It is supposed by some of their friends that they will visit Europe before their return. We believe, however, it is their intention to spend the Summer on the sea-coast near Boston. Our best wishes attend them. Sunday School Picnic We un derstand that the Sunday School of the Walnut Street Presbyterian Church hold their Aunual Picnic today, at the Fair Grounds, in which the entire" congregation worshipping at that Church will participate. , Select School Picnic The se- ' lect school taught by Miss Hooker and Miss Hough, held their annual picnic in the grove near the Bodiam J coal mines, yesterday, and had a de lightful time. They went out early and spent the whole day in the grove, having an abundance of good things in their baskets and an abundance of joy in their youDg hearts. Before Justice Stinson. There were two cases for provoking: an assault before Justice Stinson yesterday. , . One man . pleaded guilty; a ad was fined , one cent , and costs. The other pleaded not ; guilty, and' was discharged. If the first one had put in the same plea, he too would have gone clear. Recorder's Court .-r-Two cases of simple drunk constituted the chief of operations in the Recorder's Court yesterday. Each party was charged a fine of 1 with S6 20 costs. ' One paid and the other didn't. : A man preferred a charge of being noisy and disorderly against two persons who had declined to drink his whisky but who were willing to eat his ee-gs. He refused them eggs and ordered them out of his house, and from the evidence really appeared to have made all the noise ou the occasion. The accused were discharged. Another man was brought iu with a bloody noggin. He attempted to escape from the police aud was cracked over the sconce, and afterwards sent to jail to get sober.
Gravel. Mr. Lowry, the contractor for bowldering the streets, has procured a boat load of gravel, samples of which were submitted to the City Council last night. It is taken from the bank of the river on the Kentucky shore, and the sand washed out, leaving the residuum almost pure pebbles, or miniature bowlders. It is contended that this material, placed on the streets in a proper manners will make an excellent street in those localities where there is not much travel or heavy hauling. Walnut Street was improved with like material several years ago, and is, still reckoned one of the best streets in, the city. By agreement between Mr. Lowry and the Council, he is to collect a large amount of such material, while the water is too high to dig bowlders, and, in case he tails to be awarded the contract for improving such streets, he agrees to sell it to the city at a reasonable price, the city agreeing to take it off his hands on those terms.
Bowldering. The work of bowldering has again commenced, and men are again engaged in laying them down on Second Street above Walnut. The extraordinary stage of the river this season has prevented the gathering' of bowlders thus far except about seventy perehes recovered from Scuffletowu Bar. . These will be sufficient probably ' to complete Second Street to Chestnut, after, which the work will necessarily be suspended until bowlders can be obtained. In the meantime it is proposed that material shall be collected for graveling the streets ordered to be improved in that manner under the specifications adopted at the last meeting of the City Council. ' Another Sabbath School Pic nic The Sabbath School connected with , the First Baptist, Church have determined to hold their annual picnic in a beautiful grove, .near Spottsville, on Green RiverK on Saturday, June 15th, being two weeks from today. The steamer Wm. White has been chartered for the occasion, and a cordial invitation is tendered to the members of other Sabbath Schools to join them. Tickets will be issued for the round trip at fifty cents, and to children under fourteen years at twenty-five cents. This will be a delightful excursion, and will doubtless prove a great success. Work on the Wharf. The paving of the wharf has been suspended on account of the rise in the river, which drove the workmen from the line of operations. The work had reached a line opposite the upper gangway of Cox & Humphrey's wharfboat, or nearly to the middle of the block between Sycamore and Vine Streets. The water last night was nearly half way up the5 section now being laid down. The river will begin to decline to-day, and will go down rapidly, we think. Another section has been laid off above the one now under way, but if the river declines rapidly, the work on the unfinished section will be resumed by Monday. We tope 'to 'see the whole wharf from Walnut to Vine completed this season. !;, - Grierson's Benefit. We hope no one who desires to enjoy a dclightful evening's allow himself entertainment, will to forget old ' Bob Grierson's-beuefit to night. . lie , .has. made such arrangements as will insure a successful performance, and for the untiring efforts he has put tainment of the admirers,he deserves a rousing benefit to-night. .Three excellent plays are on the bill, to-night. "The Old Guard." "The Loan' of a Lover," and " Cherry Bounce." Mr. Grierson will appear in each piece, and will be assisted by Mr. Pelissier, Mr. Charles White, Mr. Fletcher, aud Robert J. McGrew, 'and Mrs. Johann Pelissier,-Mrs. GrlersOn, and Other talented artists. Wc expect to See. a crowded house to-alght, 'as' Uncle Bob deserves it. ' ' " 5 ' The Strawberry Supper. There was a much better attendance at the strawberry supper last nig.it, ard the affair passed off in the most pleasant manner. The room was very handsomely decorated, and every thing desirable was in profuse abundance, and the iair attendants received a very liberal 'patronage. The assemblage was one of the most brilliant we have seen in the city, and the enjoyment was protracted until midnight. " The lunch yesterday morning was a very elegant affair, and was pretty well patronized. Everything was sold on very liberal terms, and
the only trouble was for the patrons to eat enough to run up a reasonable bill. The lunch will be repeated today at 10J o'clock, and we can assure any one desiring a good square lunch at little cost.'that he will find this the place to get it'. The young geatlemen are especially invited to be present. The ladies managing the affair, desire us to express their thanks to Mrs. Capt. Finney, of the John D. Perry, for the present of one of the elegant and delicious cakes that graced the occasion. ' We hope to see everybody at the Lunch to-day. - A Remarkarle Conflagration. We have no doubt everybody remarked the fact that on Thursday night at a late hour the gas burned dimly, though few probably understood the cause. It was caused by a break in the main pipe at the crossing of Sycamore and Second Streets, by which thousands of feet of gas were lost to the gas company, and the whole neighborhood perfumed with the odor. Not only so, but the gas escaping in great abundance at the inlets of the sewer was Bet on fire by some enterprising individualwho probably ran away by the light, and the. conflagration came nigh causing an alarm of fire. Yesterday the pipe was repaired temporarily, and last nieht everybody had an abundance of light. ; - Hardware. Our , readers cannot have failed to see and read the showy advertisement in the Journal of II. K. Wells & Son. They occupy .the room formerly occupied by George S. Sonntag. They have brought on a large and carefully selected stock of hardware, and propose to satisfy all with goods atd prices who may deBire anything in their line,, ; Council Proceedings. Council Chambers, Evansville, May 31, 1867. ,4 The City Council met last night on the call of the Mayor, for the special purpose of ordering the advertisement of the siting ot the Council as a Board of Equalization. Present J iis Honor, Mayor Baker, and Councilman Dean, Muhlhausen, Heilman, Reitz,; Cook,,. Kolle, Wiltshire and Kraft. "' The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. Mayor Baker then announced that the principal object iu calling the Council together was to fix the time for the sitting of the Council as a Board of Equalization. On motion, it was ordered that the Board of Equalization met on Tuesday, June 10th. The Committee submitted a number of notes, which were ordered to be executed by the Ma3-or in paymeut for a house, purchased by the city, on the line of lirst Street, ordered to be opened. The Mayor submitted a communication from Gov. Baker, addressed to Col. James G. Jones, in relation to certain matters in litigation between said Jones and the city. On motion, it was ordered that the terms submitted be carried out ly the city, al! t!ie parties having agreed to the arrangement. A sample of gravel, prepared by Mr. Lowry, for graveling streets under the specifications submitted and adopted at the last meeting of theCouncil, was examined by the members of the Council. Mayor Baker advocated the feasibility of using this gravel in the construction of good streets, away from the business part, of the city. The whole matter was discussed at length. Mr. Lowry, proposed to use . his boat during the preent'high water, , to collect a large amount of gravel, on condition that the citj' will take it elf his hands in case he shall not be
' awarded the contract or graveling 1 the streets. j Ordered that Lot 14, B ock 83, to the proper Xralii;:co,. ue niiea gVHe.
