Impro vement3. The new city "school building, 'corner ''drTiThtancr Walnut Streets,1 ii fairly under way. The foundations are laid, and the walls are up to the first floor, which will be several - feet above ground. The main walls are massive, and of the most substantial character. The first tier of joists have been laid. We noticed one of th cellar "or furnace walls Jiad been . slightly damaged by the late" rain, but it can be readily repaired, and when the building is finished and the proper gutters on the street are completed, there will be no possibility of the water making its way into the excavations.- . We notice Boyd's patent ventilators are being used in this building," and from 'a careful examination of them,- we are of the opinion that they are the best yet invented. This school building when .finished, will be an object of
just pride to the citizens of Evansville. , . . . John S McCorkle, one of our distinguished builders, and Mr. E.- P. Strong, , late of College. .Hill, Ohio, have erected -a - spacious carpenter shop gnd planing mill, on the cornet of Walnut and Seventh Streets, on the site of the Picayune Mills, which will soon be in full blast, and wiH cut a considerable-, figure in the mechanical interests of the city. - . Ws notice a jmmber pf jnew buildr A il - ' TT At 1? ings erected mis season in xiuDoara s addition. There are three or four of these on -Chestnut ' Street, 'beyond Ninth, '-and ''two oh Chestnut nearthe corner of Ninth. Saunders Sansam has erected a very handsome frame residence on Eigth Street,, between' Walnut and Chestnut. The walls ; of the new Catholic Church, corner of Sixth and Cherry Streets are about half up. rThis will be, when finished, one of the most spacious and elegant Church edifices in the city. We published the di mensions and full particulars of style, &c, of this building last FalL1 Tho raumber "of V new buildings in process of erection is almost unprecedented, an ?unemng 'indication' )f the growth and prof)eriry of our city. Magnificent - Blank Books. The Journal Book Bindery . has just . completed a large number, of very superior blank boots for various county offices in Kentucky,' in cluding Muhlenburg, Lyon, Baviess, and McCracken, in all fourteen or fifteen books. In style, material and workmanship, these books defr competition, and wil! not fail to commend themselves to' all 'who may ' examine them. Using nothing but first class material, and employing none but first class workmen, the Journal Bindery and Blank Book Manufactory can defy all cempetition. All orders from responsible parties promptly filled at lowest cash rates. The Trinity Strawberry Supper. We presume it is hardly necessary to remind our readers of the Strawberry Suppers to be given tonight and to-morrow night at Mozart Hall. The-well-established reputation of the ladies of the Trinity M. E. Church, in catering to. the public taste in the way of suppeTS, " festivals, tableaux, &.C., is a warrant that this will- be"' do 'ordinary-' entertainment. The object is one worthy of the most liberal patronage. Everything will be arranged with a view to rendering the most perfect satisfaction. We have full confi Jence of seeing the halj full. A mngnificent lunch willjbe set on Fridaj' and SatnrJay mornings. The Old' 'Story' with" the Same Result. A man named Wm. Iloopman, who Jives, on the Michael P. iA -Exquisite Band Wagon.
We ha'd "Ihe'unfeTghed pleasure yes terday ef seeing "the new band wagon of the Crescent City Silver Band, and believe-;it isj ? the most , exquisitely beautiful vehicle of the kind we ever saw. The old bed with the " reach " has been lengthened out 'by Mr. F. Hammerteiny the fainJus' carriage maker, so, as to contain fire seats in addition -to the driver's, the hinder two seats being' back to' back; with large space for the bass and" tenor drummers, with their, drums. Each seat is of sufficient width to seat comfortably threa musicians.' On the larboard side of the driver's ee.it is an elevated seat fo the leader of the B'.nd. The running gear is of a claret color striped -with-gold, vcrmillion ana white. The sides of the bed, orpanuejs,;af,e dark ultra-marine blue, ornamented with .vines and wreaths in gold and asphaltuni. The dash board is a red ground, ornamented with scroll work in gold and asphaltum. In the center is a half -spread eagle, in asphaltum and gold, standing within a prone crescent of burnished gold. The rear of the bed is a red..ground iwith handsomely designed scroll, .wrork in gold. .The ends of the seats are of beautiful "carmine inscribed "Crescent City Silver Band," in chaste and tasteful letters in gold and a.-phaltum, most exquisitely shaded. The bed and seats are finished with silverL plated mounting, and the hubs will be tipped with silver-plated bands. The painting was done by special permission of the President, at the shops ' of the Evansville & Crawfordsville Railroad, by that celebrated master, Mr. James Thompson, who has no superior on the continent. .The whole affair, the wood-work and painting, is a grand triumph for the mechanics and artists of Evansville. It is fitting that the band that has no rival on the continent, should have a wajjon like themselves unrivalled. 1 The Crescents will be out to-day in their splendid new chariot, drawn by four magnificent horses, to make music for the picnic. The Emanuel Church and our citizens will be treated to strains such as ; they , have seldom heard, even in this favored locality. As the band has been at a hcav expense to. get up an .outfilt worthy ttrtmselves sTudtthe cirythey represent, we hopejour pe,oplj,wtHake'an i early opportunity to reimburse them, in whole or in part. , Grand PicNic.--The congregation of the Emaouel Church gives a grand picnic at Emery's Grove today, for the benefit of that Church. The First Mortgage Bonds of this Company afford unusual inducements of (Safety aud Profit to Investors, for the following among other reasons, vis.:. . First. The rate of Interest is Sir per Cent in Gold, payable semi-annually in the City of New York. 1 Second. The Principal ia payable in Gold at maturity. Third. The cost of the Bonds, yinely-flve - perCent. and accrued interest,' is Ten per Vent, less than that of the cheapest Six per Cent Gold-bearing lionds ol the " Government. Fourth. The United Stale Government provide nearlif half the atnowU neeestary to build the entire road, and look tnainli to a small percentage on the future lraf)Us for repattnent. FUlii. Owing to this llleral provision, accompanied wliu Extrusive Grants of Jublin Land, by which the iloverumenl fosters this tfreat. nittionul enterP i, its success is rendered .certain, and M flii'ineial stability is altogether independent of the contingencies which attend ordinarji Railroad enterprise.
