LADIES' READING.
Madeira is now celebrated for more than its wine. The mpst fashionable embroidery now used in England and on the Continent, is imported from Madeira. A young lady being engaged to be married, and being sick of the bargain, applied to a friend to help her to untie the knot before it was too late. "-Ah. certainly," he replied. it is a beau to untie it now, wnne " Crimped " IIaIR. Tha Da veil port Democrat is out in an article wherein the editor pitches wrathfully into the new style of crimped hair, so fashionable among the lair sex. lie predicts baldness, blindness, deafness, sore eyes, blind staggers, and all the ills of the catalogue for those who persist in following the mode,T and asks his lady mends how they would look en costume, with the tops of their heads as bare as the soles of their feet. The head of our contemporary is level on the hair question, but when he gets older, he will learn that the devil himself could not keep a woman from following the fashion, no matter how ridiculous it may be. It is a well understood fact that no lady reader of the Gazette, was ever known to omit to thank those gentlemen who invariably offer their seats to the gentier sex in. the street cars andEtagesJ Bit unfortunately this courtesy among the class not thus included, ia growing more and more rare. Indeed, anybody who should attempt to discover a line fomni busses- or horse cars in New York, where " thank you " is the inevitable corollary of surrendering one's seat would deserve the same eympathy of ,an. admiring world which clings to Ponce de Leon, who sought for the fountain of youth, or Diogenese wandering with his lantern in pursuit of-an" noneat man. If we may credit New Orleans paper, however, the Crescent City is more . happy, as tha subjoined item testifies: 1 ' - '- A - lady in one of our . Magazine street., cars yesterday afternoon neglected to thank a gentleman who gave up hi3 scat to her. This instance of forgetful ness was the more noticeable in the Magazine street cars, from the fact that the ladies who patronize this line have the reputation of never, failing.to acknowledge little attentions of this kind. . ' v1: '- ; Why will not some enterprising citizen import a few Magazine street cars for use on the avenues of this city? N. Y. Evening. Gazette. , m - Ladles le the Huntlns. Field. A writer of the London Ve&Zsays: The custom of the ladies enjoying the healthy And invigorating amusement of horse exercise is doubtless . not a novelty; but it Was not until Queen Victoria took frequent rides on horseback that it .became a general and fashionable accomplishment. A , few ladies of title and distinction, when at their country seats, occasionally took exercise on horseback during the Summer and autumnal months; a few appeared , in Kotton . Iiow, and occasionally on the hunting field. I can well remember, during the reign of William IV that it was quite an event to see any lady attempt to follow hounds, although .some might ride to the place of meeting to . see them find, and perchance, watch the sport from an elevated spot. ' But now the scene ia vastly changed, and there are not so many hunts'which do not rejoice in large numbers of fair equestrians. ; The taste for hunting has vastly inf creased within the last twenty years. Witness the. numbers who assemble at the places of meeting inJall 'counties.' compared with thdsc who were' wont to attend in ilb4,K Cinriagesi' of all kinds are in1 requisition, tilled with ladies who 'iif-J thus istumilated1 to en joy th invigorating: .Jcohees oi the morning tieeze as.rnJtj lhit jiiore conductive to health than "a faiiuuid drive after luncheon, And still. 'iuore so to thoe who appear in tho saddle? Of all the ladies who follow hounds, it must be accepted as a fact that there is not one who conies out because she docs not really e ijoy it. In' that respect they only do what they like, whereas there. ; are many ' jnen who are actuated by very different motives, who come out because it is the correct 'flting to do, and the xjnly, real enjoyment they experience is when they turn their horses' heads towards hoBie. We will offer Tew.hlnts in reference -to the matter. A piana-forte ought justly to be tuned twice a year, at leastp Pirst'he'd soil'commencja with a fire in the room ; second, when afire is discontinued.. By following this course, you ,have -the best guaran;tee that the instrument will remain in 1 tune for the longest period of time. Again, -the instrument should not' be suffered 5 to" -Tbmahi-1 bonvt oTintTtL pitch; ii' it is for years tuned below.it win never aiter stanajip to the, pitch without 'Wgreal'dei bh labor, iif,nn deed, it ever stands at all. Many otherwise beautiful instruments are nearly or qtiite ruined for want of proper; j. attention to these simple facts.
Vet it Swill not answer for a nro
fessional tuner to recommend these things; if he does, the people will suspect him immediately of selfish motives, and say that he is planning for his own advantage. Owners of piano fortes who are not acquainted with, the nature of the instrument, ought to bear these facts in mind, when by a yearly outlay of a trifling sum they may save themselves infinitely more than they expend by the preservation of their instrument, in which they have invested so much.
