RIVER AEWS. For other River Items see Fifth Page. River and Weather. By way of variety the weather was cloudy and rainy yesterday, with regular flocks of sea-gulls flying about. The river fell 5 inches during the 24 hoars endiDg at noon yesterday, and has gone down 10 inches in all. It will doubtless fall more rapidly henceforth. There is 20 teet water on the shoals in the Cumberland River and falling. The Tennessee is also falling. The Wabash is rising slowly, and the back water from the Ohio extends up to William's Ferry, about forty miles from the mouth. Arrivals nnd Defmrtures. She had a good trip for St. Louis The Armadillo was rather light The Leonora No. 2 took a large lot of drowned corn for ports above, and was to leave last night. She wouid have a big trip for Cincinnati and Pitts burg ...The Mayflower was get ing con siderable freight up to three o'clock. Busi ness in the packet trade, however, is not brisk The Advance No. 2, Capt. Dick Eastham, had a nice trip out of the Wabash, including 1,000 sacks of corn.' 100 bbls of flour, and much other stufl.,..Capt. Eastham reports the , river backed up for a considerable distance, aud flat-boats. laden with grain and produee, have a bard time getting out,. Arrived Mississippi, from New Orleans to St. Louis at 2 A. m. ; Glendale, from Pittsburg to St. Louis at 2 A. m. ; Ruth, from New Orleans to St. Louis at 11 a. m. The levee on the north side of Columbus, Kentucky, broke this morning, and the town was completely, inundated. Cairo is still dry. ... , ,' ' Gleanings from our Exchange. Cincinnati. The CommerciaCs St. Louis despatch says the crew and passengers rescued from the steamer Mercury, recently sunk in .Arkansas River, had arrived at Cairo. Many of the passengers were badly frozen from standing in the water the shallowest places they could occupy being ftmr feet deep. Capt. Dickenson reports the crew of the steamer George D. Palmer plundered the wreck of the Mercury: and after l hose saved from the wreck were transferred to the Palmer, their basgage was rifled, and even the underclothes of the ladies, and boots. snirts, sc., or tne men were stolen. Capt Dickenson charges the carpenter of the Palmer with being at the Jiead of the rob bers, and implicates her Captain, Clerk, and other officers in the transaction. Seven men, who floated down the stream on cotton bales, lodged against srae drilt below, and while there four of them were killed by a tree, which was blown down by the storm. Two hundred and twentyfive mules were drowned by the sinking of me .Mercury. Louisville. The Courier of Tuesday says: The river was tellinz fast yesterday, the average decline being about one inch and a half per hour. Since it commenced falling, it nas receded about four and a half feet sX the head of the lalls up to noon yesterday. Although falling pretty fast, it 'still continues out f its natural bounda ries at. all points below the tails. The Democrat of Tuesday savs: . . The rivers continue to tall, but will no doubt be swelling wit hin three days. The weather is again mild, and snow and ice melting. Receipts from above and shipments s uthward will be large this week. Freight is not abundsot yet for the Missnnri hnt. nnmlu.m nf travelers are Seek ing transport up that stream. Several mountain boats were receiving frelght.the rates being ten cents per pound, or not much less. It is rumored that two or three boats on the long list for Fort Benton this season, have determined to leave the track. No change was made in rates of freight yesterday; last week's ites will doubtless continue throughout this. Tonnage is abundant. There is quite a crash f boats at the wharf; the considerable number expected in to-day will have Irouble-in getting close to the bank.
