Pont Lnwth was in the city yester--iay and thinks matters look very billious.........A rumor had reached Louisville that the Wm. White had exploded in Green River. Some pas I " . 1TT1 -. fi sengers .who lett the v hue, soon aiier saw the light of the meteor ot which we made mention some days ago, and heard the explosion that followed. They imagined it was the White hlnwinff ud. They crossed over to d A Owensboro, and thence the ru mor was carried to Louisville. The White is all right St fllmirl striifik a snae The St. Uloud struck a snag ac piumb Point and sunk in twenty feet water. The St. Cloud was built at Pittsburg, in November, 1859, and owned by Captains W. J. Rusk and A. Byers, of Covington, Kentucky, and recently valued at $22,000, and insured in the following Cincinnati offices for $15,000, viz: Central, $3,000; Buckeye, $3,000; Commercial, $3,000; American, $2,000; Boatmen's, $2,000, : and Magnolia, $2,000. Her cargo is insured in Evansville, Cin cinnati, and othes- Eastern agencies. No lives were lost. She had about $S00 worth of pork,: shipped by Parvin and Akin, that was not insured. Cleaning from oar Exchanges. Cincinnati. The Commercial of Saturday says: The favorable change in the weather yesterdry caused the underwriters to nermit shitiments. when all the steamers at the wharf commenced engaging and receiving forthwith. Captain Hugh Campbell is refitting and refurnishing the St. Charles throughout, for the Louisville and Vicksburg trade. Captain Campbell is the right man to pace her decks. The submarine Underwriter leaves Louisville to-day forthe wreck of the Mary Swann, recently sunk at Rockport, Indiana. The Darling leaves Louisville today for Memphis. She has been detained lighting over the falls. Her pilots left here on yesterday's train. The cabin of the old Superior, lying on the bank above the foot of Ludlow, fell in with a tremendous crash, yesterday, caused by the heavy weight of snow on the roof. One man engaged in dismantling it was slightly lujureu. LOUISVILLE. The Courier, of Saturday, says: The river was falling slowly yesterday, with six feet water in the canal, by the mark, in the evening at dark. It had been falling up to 4 P. M., and then commenced slowly rising. I he decline in the previous twenty-fours was three inches at the head of the falls, and nine inches at Portland. On the falls last evening there were scant four feet water iu the pass down the Indian chute, and the river about at a stand, with every hope that it may be rising to-day. She was being lightened to four feet, :'.' The City Council Thursday evening elected William Smith, a well-known coal-boat and flat-boat pilot, to the nosition of Falls Pilot. He is well qualified as a pilot, and will no doubt soon be a profi'-ient in. the business. New Albany. The Ledger of Friday says: The Indiana had a biff trip for New Orleans last night. She could not take any more aboard, and passed here without landing. She was about half loaded when she passed here, and tried to land, but did not like the looks of the ice pack. It is not strange she did not land at New Albany. Louisville. The Louisville Con rier sticks to the Drediction that there is a flood impending in the Ohio. It says: "All dwellers along the river at points liable to overflow are warned in time to DreDare for a flood. The fall ot snow aloug the water courses is almost unpredented. and if it 'goes off with rain, we predict toe most disas trous overflow that has ever occurred on the Western waters. The rise will be sudden and destructive."The prospect of a sudden rise is rather gloomy in this latitude. St. Louis. The Democrat, of Sat urday, says : A good deal of rain fell Thursday night, and a little yesterday. The swell was altogether last evening eighteen inches. The river rose only about two and a halt inches yesterday, which is too slow to be alarming. it is believed that a rise or six ieei would be necessary to clear the river of its gorges. Some of the insurance officers took risks on freight yester day. Business at the wharf will not be resumed to any appreciable extent, until a considerable augmentation occurs in the volume of water now bridged between St. Louis, and ' the confluence of the Ohio. However. several owners were loading their steamers yesterday, and confidently speaking of leaving to-day for Little 'liock and other points. Cairo eclipses t. Louis now, as a commercial port. That angular place is full of freight, stock, &c, awaiting shinment South, and good prices paid too. New Madrid is overflowing with corn : other points are ready to ship hundreds of bales of cotton, and it may be said that Cairo and all other points below are all busier tnan di. Louis. Our time will come when the ice breaks away. New Orleans. The Times, of Wednesday, says: Since our last the weather continued dark and cloudy, while old Sol kept himself in obscurity during the entire day. Business on the landing was quite active, there being an unusua number of departures. BAKERY. EVANSVILLE STEAM BAKERY . and CAND Y MAN UFA CTOR Y, By A. W. CHRIST, No. 105 Main Street, bet.
