River and Weather. Cincinnati, 3an. 24. The river has fallen 14 inches; 14 feet 7 inches in the channel; weather cloudy; thermometer 29. The weather is cloudy and moderating. The river had fallen about 1 foot during the 24 hours ending at 3 o'clock yesterday. There is ten feet water hence to Cairo on the shoalest bars. There is little ice in the river, and that is all floating on the Kentucky side Navigation to New Orleans may be said to be fairly resumed. Arrivals and Departures. The arrivals and departures up to 3 o'clock yesterday, include the Silver Moon, Cincinnati to Memphis ; Sam. Parker, New Orleans to return; Henry Ames, Louisville to New Orleans ; Minyoung, to mouth of Green River. Boats Dne. Among the first boats due . are the Havana and Rowena, for Nashville; Shamrock and Arabian, for St. Louis; Darling, for Memphis; J. P. Webb, from Memphis; Lawrence and Mary Irwin, for Arkansas River; Nick Longworth, Lady Gay, Amazon, P. W. Strader, Swallow and Stonewall, from-New Orleans; B. L. Lodge, Emerald, Wild Wagoner, Armadillo, Emma No. 3 and Indiana, for New Orleans; Morning Star from Louisville; Quickstep and Armada, from Cairo; Wm. White and Ada Lyon, from Green River. 1 ; . : - ' - Miscellaneous. ; Our harbor is again open, and the familiar whistle of steamboats is again heard in these waters. Navigation
jnay be said to be permanently re sumed, and the indications now are that no disastrous flood need be apprehended... ......The snow is melting' rapidly ' without rain......:.. The ice in', the river ; is .less abundant and ' quite ; rotten....'.! J.... The Sam. Parker came up yesterday morning from Mt. Vernon, experiencing but little difficulty and do damage. She has 600 bales of cotton for this port. ' Her cotton for ports above she left on her barges opposite Shawneetown, to wait on improvement in navigation. She will go to Little Hurricane Island this morning for one of her barges, caught by the Liberty No. 4, and will return here and probably load for New Orleans... The Silver Moon passed down for Memphis at 6 o'clock yesterday morning with a full trip. She expects no further trouble The Henry Ames reached this port yesterday at noon, eight days out from Portland. She has a big trip, and added somewhat here. Her officers are exceedingly clever gentlemen. Geo. A. Williams, so well and favorably known in the Louisville and Henderson packet trade, is her chief clerk. Among her L passengers we had the pleasure of meeting Mr. E. O'Bannon, late of the Louisville Hotel, who started to New Orleans on a pleasure trip, but has. seen but little of the pleasure yet. The Ames would probably get off last night, and would be full as she could be packed The Virginia dropped down alongside of R K. Dunkerson & Co.'s wharf-boat, and is rapidly loading for New Orleans The wharf is covered with freight, and she will be unable probably to take all that offers The David Watts was receiving a nice trip yesterday Capt. Mitchell left for the mouth of Green Riveryesterday with'dispatches, ordering the Charmer to come to the wharf and prepare to resume her trips... The Armada and Liberty No. 2 may be looked for to-day with large cargoes of cotton. Whether the Liberty will go through to Louisville or not this trip we are not advised The Laura. Fenton and Louisa were cutting out of the ice yesterday The Indiana was announced positively to leave Louisville yesterday for New Orleans. She may be expected today. Boats Leaving To-Day. For Memphis. The elegant and finely appointed passenger steamer, Laura Fenton, will positively leave for Memphis this evening. Captain Hewitt is in command, and Master Walter Pennington is in the office. Two more pleasant or accommodating gentlemen do not exist. She will want freight and passengers. See advertisement on 5th page The David Watts will also leave for Memphis to-day. Her officers are pleasant gentlemen.
For New Orleans. The s-pleu id side-wheel tre'ght and p;is-enircr steamer Virginia is now receiving aud will, positively, leave for Cairo, Memphis, Vicksburg, and New Orleans, to-day at noon. Her cabin accommodations are not surpassed by any boat on the river. Capt. Fitzgerald is in command, and that prince of river
clerks, A. D. Armstrong is her chief clerk. Their genial and social qualities are . unsurpassed, and they are proverbial for their courtesies to passengers. Mr. Carrol, a pleasant and accommodating gentleman of - varied accomplishments,' is her accurate freight clerk. She will have a big trip. For Cairo. The splendid Charmer, Capt. Will. . Fowler, will resume her trips to Cairo to-day, the weather and ice permitting. She has elegant accommodations for passengers. John Adams and Geo. Nicholson are her popular Clerks." For Wabash River. The neat and substantial Louisa, Captain Tom, Bolus, is receiving and will leave this evening for Wabash River. We hope to see her get a good trip for that stream. Gleanings from our Exchanges. Cincinnati. The Commercial, of Wednesuiy, says: The weather was cold and clear yesterday, with the mercucy ranging at 35 deg. at noon. There is considerable floating ice in the river opposite this city. At Pittsburg, the river is falling, vith 3i feet in the channel. The owners and captains of steamers, pursuant to a call, met at the rooms of the New Orleans Pilots' As sociation, yesterday, for the purpose of lorming a uenevoient association, under the name of "The Cincinnati Charitable Marine Association;" and, after adopting a constitution aud bylaws, elected Capt. Y. Batchelor, President, and Capt. James S. Wise, Secretary. We congratulate Captain Hiram K, Ilazlett on his matrimonial alliance, having recently led to the Bridal altar one of the belles of Steubenville. Of Wellsville, Commercial. Honor to whom honor, you know. Louisville. The ' Courier, of Wednesday, says: ' The river continues to fall at this point, with about 7 feet water in the channel last evening, and 5J feet on the falls, down the .Indian chute. The weather was clear and slightly freezing, with the thermometer at noon ranging at 30 degrees. The barometer yesterday was slowly rising in the morning, but had the appearance of falling in the evening. There was a dense fog on the river yesterday morning, but it was soon dissipated by the sun. The river, at times, was tolerably clear ot ice, and, at one time, it was tho Jght it had all "run out," or had probably gorged. Up about the tow-head, however, it was as heavy as ever, the river being full of heavy ice extending from shore to shore, with occasionally huge masses or cakes floating off down the fiK The ice at the head of the falls had thinned out sufficiently yesterday to warrant the managers of the JefFersonville ferry to resume trips which were kept up pretty regularly in the eveniug. The mail boat Gen. Buell, yesterday was busily engaged taking cotton aboard, preparatory to start to Cincinnati at the first opportunity. STEAMBOATS. FOR NEW ORLEANS.
