CiirecrsrNATi, Jan. aj. liie river nas fallen twoleet, witn seventeen teet two inches in the channel. Weather clear. Thermometer 29. , ,,,, . The clouds broke, away Monday; night, and the moon and stars snone forth with great effulgence. , The mercury fell rapidly and stood at 10 above zero at 6 o'clock yes terday morning. , A heavy rrosc covered the snow, and a dense, impenetrable fog shrouded the fiver and filled the streets until nearly 10 o'clock ; so dense early in the morning that the eye could not pene trate it across the streets. As the day wore on- the fog was dissipated, and the sun shone warm and genial, melting the snow on the roofs rapidly. The mercury at ten o'clock had risen to 20 above zero, and was rising rapidly. The river had fallen two Inches up to noon yesteiday, and will now go down rapidly unless tae melting snow checks the decline. The Ice still runs thick, but is far less abundant than prei viously, and is said to be rotting and sinklng resumptlon 0f navigation is a problem yet to be solved. Hflacellaneonfi. The Ice Is not packing any further in the harbor, but all the water craft at the wharf are tightly frozen In and awaiting events. This state of affairs enables the Virginia to repair her wheels, which were in rather a delapldated condition The Louisville Courier prophecies an unprecedented flood, and warns the people along the river to prepare for it. We loin somewhat in the Courier's forebodings. Still we have faith in Providence, and believe that the weath er will be so tempered that the snow will go off gradually. Still it will be wise for people living below the line of high water mark to be on their guard, and be prepared for whatever may happen The Mer cury here had steam up yesterday at noon, but whether to leave or simply to keep pumped out, we were not advised We were taken by surprise and captured yes terday at noon by Capt. Ben. Mirrlelees, of the Silver Moon, who invaded our sanc tum with his clerk, Mr. J. L. Carter, and pilots Wes. Owens and Joe McCulloch.: We welcomed them gladly and ex changed our cargo of news with them... The Silver Moon left Louisville at nine o'clock ednesday night, and lay up at Hawesvllle three days, having encoun tered heavy ice all the way from Louis vllle.- She left Hawesvllle Monday morning, and after breaking through two or three heavy gorges, tied up in a safe har bor opposite the mouth of Green River, whence Capt. Mirrlelees and his compan ions walked to the city, a distance of seven miles, rounding-to occasionally in fence corners to Increase their volume of steam. They report the Emma Floyd and Pales tine laid up below Wolf Creek; the J. H. Groesbeck, Kenton, and Bengal Tiger at the foot of Tray Reach, in which the Moon encountered a heavy gorge of ice -..The Liberty No. 4 captured one of her own barges and a model btrge of Capt. Jim Good, and landed them at the foot of Little Hurricane. River was rising fast at Hawesville when the Moon left The Mary Swan Is submerged tc her boiler deck, and the Ice is cutting away her stanchions. She is in a hopeless condition .. The officers of the . oon report the cakes of ice as from 5 to 15 feet deep and very solid under the water. . Notwithstanding all her difficul ties the Moon is in excellent condition. and has not lost a wheel-arm since she left Louisville. Capt. Ben. and his men returned to his boat last night in a sleigh, and will probably bring her down here to day. She saw nothing of the Henry Ames which left Louisville Just behind them. Cleanings from oar Exchange. Louisville. The Courier of Monday says: On the fulls last evening there were six feet three inches water in the pass down the Indian cnute, and tne river as lull as ever of heavy masses of floating ice. The ice in front of the city and flatooat wharf has extended out half acros the river, one thick, Impenetrable mass,, and hundreds of people were " out on the ice " yesterday. It was, however, covered with snow, and exceedingly rough and uneven npon the suriace, and wholly unfit .for j skating. Earlv Saturday night the Covington, or Newnort. and Cincinnati ferry dock, that had been torn loose from Its moorings by the breaking ud of ice the other day. float ed down to opposite the foot of Fourth Street, where it now lies sunk in about six feet water at the head of the falls, or reef of rocks. It is surrounded Dy ice, and we think there can be but slight hones of sav ing It. The cargo box, or upper works, is above water, and some adventurous chaps boarded the wrecK yesterday. St. Louis. The Democrat of Monday, says: The snow fall is one of the deepest expe rienced here for many years. The river was stationary yesteiday, having fallen nearlv a toot on i riday ana saiuraay, Navigation continues suspeuded from this point, although one boat, the Alton packet. shDued into port yesterday, having ac cidentally succeeded in making a trip of twenty-nve miles, ine ice aoes not seem formidable, but there is an abundance of it. Klver Dullness is at an enu nere lor me Dresent. we are giaa to learn uai Aiiuy ixaa,cs, clerk, and the entire crew of the Platte Valley, are reported on the list ot saved. It heems the boat's books were lost, hence no list of her passengers' names can De given The Southwester came in yes terday morning irom Alton, ana oi course lays up here. A Cairo dispatch of the Democrat, says : The Walter B. Dance is aground at foot of Dogtooth, the ice gorging and changing the chancel, leaving her dry. The Cumberland took 400 tons off the Dance, but did not move her. T He Cumberland then ran aground on account of tne rapid change in the channel, remaining three hours, but reached Cairo this evening, and says it will be impossible to reach the Dance with vessels larger than flatboats by morning. No further news of the Platte Valley here, except that all her officers are saved but the steward. The officers are much praised ior their intrepid conduct; they were tne last to leave the wreck. The shock threw down all the stoves, and the boat would have burned had she not sunk. F.utlmRlirl Insftnf lite varlps frnm fortT tO seventy. The Olive Branch and Louisville carried the survivors to their destinations free. New Orleans. The Times, of Wednes day last, says: A sudden change took place in the weather on Monday nieht and yesterday. Tue
