Masonry at the Capital. Editors Journal : .
A large number of your readers and certainly not . the least intelligent portion of them, are connected with this ancient fraternitv: for the benefit of such, your correspondent has en - deavored to gather , fronrprominent members and official sources, a variety of interesting facts which, indicate that , the Royal Art ; is .enjoying great i prosperity in uhs ciiy j. weive :iua I sonic bodies are. quite busily engaged in working up the rapidly presented material. Jt j.ia believed . there 'are nearly 1,000 Master Masons in Ithe sz ', city.distributed among: Centre Lodge No. 23; Marion Lodge, No. 35; Cap ital CityJ Lodged No. 318; Lodge -; the Ancient Land-Marks, No. 319 i and Teutonia Lodge (German), .U. D. I and, perhaps, 200 to 400 non-affiliated Besides the above-named lodges and completing the aggregate of bodies ", twelve 'are: ,. Indianaoplis Chapter, ; No. 5, ' Royal , Arch Masons ; In 1 No 9 Rrrra I and Select Masons: Raper Com ; mandery, No. .1, Kaights Templars Adoniram Grand Lodge of Perfection, Saraiat Council of Princes of Jerusa- . lem, Indianapolis Chapter of RoseCroix de H-r-d-m, and Indiana Con eistory of .Sublime Princes of the Royal Secret. ' " The four bodies last named are sub , ordinates of the Boston Supreme - Council of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite. ' .! This Right was organized in its pres-i ent form, in France, early in the 1 eighteenth century, and has since ex ; tended to England, Scotland, Ireland, I Belgium, South America, Central America, the Colonies and Provinces jof England and France, the United States and other countries. Next to t the first three Degrees of the York Rite, it is the most extensively diffused throughout the Masonic, world.' j lln October, 1863, some half dozen Masons, resident, at ,i' Indianapolis, -upon the representations and comImendations of the . late Caleb , B. I Smith, first Secretary of the Interior ; under President Lincoln, ' and at the time of his death, which occurred on tie 7th of January, 1804,". Judge of ! the District Court ' of the , iTJnited TStates . for the .District of; Indiana, i were induced to ' go to Cincinnati, ' Ohio, and there received the various I .grades of the Rite, up to and inclu"ding the thirty-second "Degree. r:But it was not until the month of February, 1864, that Adoniran Grand Lodge vAit;i-.n..j n :i vi iciicvuuu auu kjai aiau vuuuuii Ul Princes of Jerusalem were organized under Dispensationand the working of the Ineffable and Historical DejRrees entered upon within : our own State. In the month of March, 1866, In dianapolis Chapter of Rose-Croix de H-r-d-m and Indiana " Consistory of Sublime Princes of the Royal Secret began their labors. Of the i Jatter named body (Consistory), there t can only be one in a State. - . . ' The presiding officer of, Adoniram Grand Lodge of Perfection is John Caven; Esq., mayor of, the city of Indianapolis. s This Lodge has jurisdiction of. the grades 'from, the fourth degree to the : fourteenth degree inclusive, which are styled the " Ineffable Degrees.:'.'; Dr. P. G. C; Hunt is the presiding officer of Saraiat Council of Princes of ' Jerusalem, in which are worked the fifteenth and sixteenth, or " Historical." ' i Indianapolis Chapter of Rose-Croix de H-r-d-m, has for its presiding officer General John Love, and embraces in its" workings the 17th. and 18th,, , or ."Philosophical , Degrees. With the Chapter begins Christian Masonry. f Indianapolis Consistory of Sublime Princes of the Royal Secret, has jurisdiction over the;,4i Chivalric Historical and Philosophical Degrees, rang- ' Ing from, the 19th tojthe 32d degree inclusive. Edwin A. Davis, Esq., presides over the Consistory, The peculiarities of the Scottish. Rite are high dramatic, merit, moral lessons of great beauty and power, and impressive surprises, the like of which could not be anticipated even by those who have already p.issed through the four divisions of the York Rite, viz: the Degrees of Lodge, Chapter, Council, and Commandery. Its claims maybe briefly stated: it is more widely diffused than aoy other rite of Masonry, with the exception of the first three degrees, and is free from the jurisdictional peculiarities which have been introduced even into bymbohc Masonry, and are more strongly marked in the superior degrees of what is known as the "York Rite. - , - ' ,.
The A. aud A. Scottish Rite is very
friendly to, and not in the slightest degree in conflict with the York Rite. Persona to be eligible for its grades, in some jurisdictions, must first have attained to the Order of Knight Tem plar.- Iuludiana and Ohio the peti tioners must be active Master Masons, and -members in " good ' standing"" of some Blue Lodge. " Although less than three years have elasped since the establishment of the Rite in . this city, it; now numbers cot less than one hundred living i members, 'including many gentlemen , in high civil and Masonic standing. : '-" - " - : . . , m.t. . J V.li;Ui A corbispondent of the Washing ton Uhronicle, writing from' , Virginia, over, the "signature of Southern Union Man," gives his opinion of the impeachment question, which is as follows: 1 ' ! ' 1 lf General Ashley has struck the levnote of reconstruction. The course of Andrew Johnson has reconstruct ed not the Union, but the rebellion,so far as it was in human power to do it. tie is to-day the head and iront. the baais' and stinnnrt. of t.hft rebftl snirifc of the South, whichdead at the surrenaer oi Liee, nis acts have gaivan ized into life. When the nation, vie torious, and its power in the hands of us inenas ana saviors, was prepared to secure the results of victory, heal the wounds of war, and enter upon a career of prosperity and - elorv un known before? when it seemed as if the Almighty Himself stood ready to pour out the rewards of fidelity to liberty and union, until the humblest in the land should be blessed, and' even traitors be thankful for; their own - defeat: Andrew Johnson.; the successor of' Lincoln, the leader and trusted agent of triumphant patriot ism, himself turned traitor, and, with unmatched ienominy.Vbrew the weurht of his great . trust ; into the ? scale of treason and rebellion, and boldly said . T ii .1 ttt m i. ii snau not be. tie has; leit no means untried to baffle fictory. to stifle lib erty, and to ,v,eto, progress.ii, He has renewed the, rebel, hope; he has embpldened rebel hatehe has stimulated resistance to law; he'has encour aged rebel violence and bloodshed. and he has paused general threats of" another war. In a corresponding de gree he has injured and sought to ruin the friends and the interests of the Union everywhere and at all times. , ' From the London Globe. 1811 and 1867. iuessrs. iuacmuuan sc uo., in an nouncing the " Statesman's . Year Book, for 1867, draw an interesting tabular comparison between the state of Europe in 1817 and 1867. The half century has extinguished three kingdoms, one grand duchy, eight aucnies, xour principalities, one electorate, and lour republics. Three new kingdoms have arisen, and one kiogdom has been tran'tformed into an empire. There are now forty-one Estates in Europe, against htty which existed in 1817. It may be remarked that the nineteen grand dukes and dukes and princes of 1867 will be much less ducal and princely (thanks to one Bismark) than the thirty-two who ruled in 1817. Not less remarkable is the territo rial extension of the superior States of the world; Russia has annexed 567,364 square ' miles ;: the United States, 1,968,000; France, 4,620; Prus sia. aif.Tol. oardinia expanding into Italy, has increased by 83.041. Our Indian Empire has been augmented by 451,616. The principal States that have lost territory are Turkey. Mexi co, Austria, Denmark and the Neth erlands, buch are the changes oil nail a century; how will Europe and the "world look half a , century nence?
