(A. splendid ..meteor. as we were
standing on Cox & Humphrey's wharfboat yesterday morning, as the Indiana was - loading, the whole heavens ' and earth were suddenly lighted up by one of the most splendid and gorgeously beauti ful meteors we have ever seen. Its course was short but most dazzlingly brilliant, and for a moment one could have seen pin upon the wharf. It was of extraordi nary size and brilliance, and was a good substitute for the grand panorama of shooting stars that did not come off 10 November. We remember, of seeing one of similar brilliancy and magnitude when we were a boy, in Virginia, some 30 years ago,- the course of which like , this, was from, the southeast to the northwest.: The trade of that was larger, and Its extlno tlou was followed by a heavy report as ot distant artillery. That . frightened this delighted and pleased us.' 7 - The Weather. The weather for the past three dys has been truely wlnterish In its character and aspects: On' Sunday and Monday it was mild and pleasant, and the, streets became quite muddy, strong hopes being entertained of a general thaw Monday night .H srew cold and the earth was frozen solid. At an early" hour in the evening, yesterday, R thawed'a little on the South hillside and: on the . levee, but froze In .the shade nearly all day, and in the evening 'the mercury 'fell rapidly'; ranging at 23, above zero at li 6'ckick, with a jle-r; Bky (With. indications of a. heavy frost and a it .rd. freeze; The wind' was in th'e southwest pearly all day. There is some danger of the back wall, next to the negroshanties. falling upon those buildings. The wall is very heavy with a large, tall chimney, and if.it should fall upon the wooden buildings, might do serious damage to the inmates. An ' effort should be made . to throw' the wall inward. The bricks are panning out "quite profitably. As we passed that locality late last eve ning, we noticed that the whole of the wall fronting on Locust Street, except a very small portion,' had been tlirown' down, part ,of, it the ( very . foundation.' A strong west wind would be sure : now to blow down the ' back wajl upon the negro shanties, and the inmates were becoming rather anxious on the subject. W r, i .j. ; ! WEi.il Pleased.
