The Great Race. Mr. James Gordon Bennett, Jr., like a certain noble poet, has "woke up " in English waters to " find himself famous." His yacht, the Henrietta, wUl gather as generous a crop of laurels over there as her illustrious .predecessor, the America, did, some years , ago-while the fact that the Duke of Edinburgh (one of the royal familyX has accepted the challenge of her owner to run a race around the Isle of Wight, is another feather in his cap and one, the wearing sof which, no ' one Bhould grudge him for his enterprise', pluck and courage have certainly' won' it.1- Thus much may be said of him, without any disparagement of- his1 equally enterprising and equally daring associates, the Vesta' and Fleetwing. ' The sad loss' -of life' which attended the voyage .of the last mentioned vessel, is the only cloud that overshadows what
must neeessarily.be considered one of the most remarkable nautical teats on record. , , ; -; Legal Tautology. . v : There are. probably no absurdities that hang on with' such persistency iis legal absurdities., Y Those of medicine and theology ',' luiye, been overcome with' great ease as compared with the obstinacy of,, the, Iiwyeis ; in .holding on to their .nposenseIf any one ever had anything to d with them, either in or out of. court, he has been struck with the . utter f corruption " of good English rhetoric in all their papers. Listen to the reading.of an indictment, for example, and count the time wasted in a most irratipnal verbosity. Still, there f has. teen some improvement during the past century. t There is room for; much more reform in their profession, and ;even, a,t this day we may hurl at the lawyers the following hit from Steele's eomedy: ,"I hope," saj's the lawyer, , in . that comedy, " to see the day -vhen . the indentures shall be.vthe' exact measure of the land that passes by it; for it is a discouragement to the gown that every ignorant rogue-of an heir should in a word or two understand his father's meaning, and held ten acres of land by half an acre of parchment. Let others think of logic, rhetoric, and I know not what impertinence, but mind their Tautology; . What is the first excellence in a lawyer? Tautology. What's the second? ' Tautology. What's the third?" Tautology; as an old pleader said of action," , . " ' ; 1 Antiquity of London. 1 Nineveh, Babylon, Ephesus, Thebes, Carthage, Atrens, and many other once famou3;crties,. have passed away. The Eastern sun still, shines, but shines not upon their lofty towers and gates'" of brass. Their magnificent structures the admiration of the world lfe buried in ruins; their kings and ?ulets ' have alike gone down to oblivion ; and scarcely a landmark is left to point with authenticity to their history. Yet, what was then but an incoisiderable village has been gradually growing ' for upwards of three thousand years, and is now the rich and proud " metropolis of the greatest empire on earth. While Nineveh, 'labylon and Rome.were yet flourishing' in -'all their 1 splendor, London4 vas only a small collection of rude dwellings, ; built of wattied sticks, phstered with mud, . and thatched vith straw. It was origin ally called Ludgate, and according to Stowell, the historian, was built about twslve hundred years 'before Christ probably on the site of what a M I ' t.il X t siui goei Dy uie name 01 juuagate Hill. It was in a triangular form, and whai Caesar, made his first descent upn the island of Britain, the city of iiudgate contained about ten thousand inhabitants, and was a place of consderable commerce. T , Wools and Woolen. The New: York World attributes the de.rease in the demand for woolen gods to the inability of the people" tc buy. Says that paper: How shall the prices of wool and woolen goods be improved?. In the first place, withdraw the unhealthy stimuIous h the shape of " protection " which has brought affairs to the present uifavorable state. By. applying more stimulou3, more protection, a more disastrous collapse will be made certain in the near future. Let the farmers send their, surplus sheep to the slaughter pens, and turn a portion of tli3ir sheep'; pastures into fields of grain Give the middle classes of the cities and large towns food at something less than double the old prices, and; they will soon be able to buy goecs in sufficient quantities to clear the" present surplus .off the, market, thu enabling the leading manufacturers to resume their operations with a i reasonable certainty of moderate profit. But even here a curtailment must -be 'expected; ;Tho inexperienced aDd financially weak must expect to go down in a crisis like this. A Lie and a Falsehood. Fuller, in his Church History, illustrates the difference between a lie and a falsehood as follows! "Let me add that though it be a lie in the. clock, it is but a.falsehood in tho hnnrl .nf tho dial when pointing at the wrong hour; if; rightly following the direction of the wheel that moveth it. And the fault is not mine if I truly cite what isifalse on the credit of another." It follows from this that there is a well-founded distinction between saying of a man, he lies, or he tells a falsehood ; for bjr the former we charge him with originating what he knowg'to be untrue, and in the other of only circulating what is not true on the credit of the liar,, whom he mistakes for a truth-teller.
