Assault axd Battery Philip Hild assaulted John Seibert at Singer's saloon on 'Fourth Street, on Saturday, inflicting severe injury on him. A warrant was issued against Hild, But he hadnedthe city. The bet evidence we have of the fact that the hog packing season has oomniernced, was-the receipt yesterday, from our friends Aikin, Parym & Co., of a basket of tender loins and spare ribs, for which we thank thesa. Healthy Exercise. Oh visiting the river yesterday morning, we discovered twenty or thirty men and boys throwing stones, bowlders, brick bats, coal and clubs, into the old elm tree on the levee with an energy and enthusiasm that would have done credit to a gang of Irishmen in a row. Upon going to see the cause, we discovered that , they had a gained fowl treed, and were endeavoring to knock it from its perch. After watcrrtwg-op erations for a time, we conclusion that the guinea was in no danger, and from it unconcornedness we tning it naa arrived at the same conclusion UlU.r ul Not on the. Bills. At the Thea tre last night many of the audience, were amused no little at a scene rrrit on the bills. He speaks in high terms of the conduct of the Fair, and of the horses entered for the various matches. By a comparison with the races reported from other points, the time made at Evansville ranks high in the pictures being as fast, on an average, as any we have seen. We regret that the crowded state of our columns prevents us from giving the written and. interesting letter to our readers at present. '. ' A High Old Muss. Owr usually quiet and orderly city was disgraced on Sunday night by a high old mUss at a drinking house on Third Street. As usual, there is two sideY to the story. From what we learn we deduce the following general facts: Chip Bunnell and John Shepard, who had been drinking, we into Lorenr' Saloon, on Third Street, below the Washington House, on Sunday night about half-past 10 o'clock, and. while there, got into a difficulty with Dr. Lauenstoin and his brother, during which' Shepard got a whack over the head with a bottle, and Dr. Lauenstein got a severe cut iu the arm with a kuife, as is said, by Ilunhell. Lauenstein's brother, we are told, got an ugly bruise about the eyes, and Hunnell received a crushing blow over the head wifh an iron poker. The timely arrival of the police prevented further damage, or the consequences might, and no doubt wouh have been far more serious. Shepard had an examination on yesterday before Justice Stinsou. who fined him $10 wiith $3 50 costs. We understand an action has been brought against Hunnell for as: bault and battery, with intent to kill. ,.It is no pleasure to us" to record, such proceedings on the part of young men of the ciy, but our duty as public journalists compels us to do ao. The whole affair may be laid at the door of that bane of human happiness the immoderate use of intoxicating liquors. FrtWTON Brothers. This "house, whose, card appears this morning, 'is too well known to need commendation from us. The Preston Brothers' have a reputation throughout the West for liberal enterprise, intelligence and business integrity, second to none of our acquaintance. With a business combination reaching , to. the East and the South, , house in the city ha8 better facilities for pur-, chasing, and they are thus enabled te compete with the groeera of Cincinnati, or any other Western'city.
