Special to the E vansville Journal. Weekly lew Tote Market Review. Nkw York Nov. 20. Editors Journal : During last week, the fall in gold premium, together with a growing opinion Jo a future stringency in money, materially affected transactions in all kinds of business. In Gold, the extreme range during the week was from 145 to Ml. To-day, Gold has been down to 140, but the average rate Is about 141. Government Bonds Are dull and heavy. We do not hear of any deckled foreign demand. Five-Twenties of 1862 are quoted, registered, 106 to 107, and coupons, 108 to 108 In the Monet market, while quoted as easy, we notice a growing hardness. Rates are stiffening, either in price or in scrutiny
or paper, and rates may be quoted as 5 to 8 per cent., in proportion to the security or endorsement offered. Sterling Exchange Has fallen off in demand and In value. Bankers' sixtydays Sterling, 108. Breadstuffs Are lower. The receipts exceed all anticipations; and though the stocks are by no means excessive, yet buyers show no signs of yielding to demands of holders. The declining tendency in gold is also against holders of Flour and Grain. Flour is 25c. to 50c. lower than a week ago, and Grain about in proportion. Indian Corn closed at 81 30 to 81 32 for Western Mixed, in store. Provisions Have fluctuated, but the general tendency has been to lower a,nd etill lower prices. We quote Mess Pork at 821 0021 25. Lard, 13Mc for Western. Coffee Is inactive, and prices In favor of buyer. We give quotations atl Vi9c, gold, for Rio. Sugars In view of the uncertain rate and lowering tendency in gold, little is doing. We quote good refining 10J$c, fair grocery 10c, A coffee 14c Freights To the West are still unchanged, though there are Indications that the railroad combination will soon be at an end ; we cannot, ef course, predicate result, but would judge that this event will tend to lower rates. To Europe, for tobacco, the rate on hogshead is as follows: Liverpool 20s sail, 40s steamer; same to Bremen for sailing vessels, On cotton, to Liverpool freights d sail, d steamer. Cotton In cotton the decline has been about 4c during the week, but the market on Saturday and yesterday exhibited a better feeling. Middling to-day is worth 34 to 34c, yet to realize the outside quotations it requires almost "Strict Mid." The spinners, both in this country and in England, complain of the results of purchases at current prices. They purchase very sparingly and in face of a weak gold and foreign exchange market, together with large receipts, and accumulating stocks of cotton at all ports, we are Inclined to think that cotton holds up well. Some parties look for higher prices; yet, until a revival of trade with the manufacturers both in this country and in England, together with higher rates pf gold, we see no fair hope for permanent improvement, let th e present crop result as it may. Yours, truly, Foster, Cofeland, A Co. Weekly Review of tbe Cincinnati Produce and Provision Market. Cincinnati, Nov. 23, 1866. Editors Journal : The pork packing season is here, but packers yet hold back and ask how much lower the price of hogs is going? The ex perience of the past two months has rendered many leading operators extremely cautious, and the trade is in an unsettled condition. The fact of a very large portion of what was exported last season being sent back to us In the Fall, with the certainty or a largely increased crop of nogs mis season, causes puckers to ask where they are to sell their surplus and get out at present prices. So far but few hogs have been taken by regular packing houses, the butchers and slaughter house wners being about the only buyers. rrices during this wees have been, for live hogs, 86 25 to 87 00, some sales of choice dressed at 88. The receipts for the wees, to date, were 13,891 head. There were some buyers of piece meats from the block at 634c for shoulders, 8c for sides and luc. for hams. Hogs were in better demand to-day than they have been through the week. BAtw-rna siock is reduced, and we think now we may say with safety, that the quantity In this market is small. Shoulders selling at 13c, ribbed sides held at the same; Clear sides 1414c, with holders in some instances asking 15c, all packed. Mess Pork New selling at 821 ; Old held at 827. Lard Dull, at 12Jc for prime in tierces. Grain During the fore part of the week, wheat declined and the demand lell off. Yesterday and to-day the reports from Europe via Cable being mors favorable, the demand improved and prices advanced, closing at 82 752 80 for No. 1 Red Winter ; Hill and White held at 82 852 90. The stock here is not large, and holders have confidence in the future. Corn new is coming In slowly, and selling at 4550c In ear, and 5355c in sacks; old held at 80 90c for ear and shelled. Receipts in the last five days, 36,626 bushels. Flour Has been gradually settling down in price, but yet remains relatively higher than in New York or New Orleans, and sells slowly to the local trade at 810 00 10 50 for superfine, 810 2511 50 for extra, 813 00Q14 00 for family, with some fancy brands selling higher. Tbe receipts this week,-to date, 14,952 barrels, while the ex ports have been 14,738 barrels, which, if you leave out the grinding of the city mills, does not increase the stock much. Cotton Has been in better demand dur ing the past week, and prices advanced about 2c per pounds up, to Wednesday, when, In sympathy with the decline in gold, prices fell back slightly, closing at 3131c for middling. Receipts during the week, 4,854 bales. Exports,3 ,874 bales. Business limited, and market very quiet at the close. Very respectfully. Barton fc Pool.
