River mid Weather. Yesterday was partly cloudy but warm. Mercury 76 at noon. The river had risen ten inches during the twenty-four hours up to 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon, and was rising slowly. It was about at a stand at Louisville on Saturday. Arrivals and Departures The arrivals and departures up to three o'clock yesterday Include tb Mercury, Cairo to Louisville; Nashville, Cairo to Evansville; Newsboy, Henderson and return; Rose Hite, Henderson to Louisville; Charmer, to Cairo; Curlew to Newburg; Louisiana, Louisville to New Orleans; N a lion i a and J. R. Gilmore, Cincinnati to Memphis. Boats Due. Among the first boats due here are the Shamrock and Kate Putnam, for St. Louis; Bertha, Camella, and Lady Franklin, from St. Louis; J. R. Gilmore and Minneola, to Memphis; Mary Erwin, to Arkansas River; Armadillo and Abeona, for New Orleans; Lorena and Emperor, from New Orleans; Tarascou, from Louisville; Sam. Orr, from Cairo ; J. P. Webb, from Eastport, and Ada Lyon, from Green River. M isc 1 1 an roan. Business was not lively on the levee yesterday morning, aud there were few arrivals The Mercury aud Nashville had moderate trips The Rose Hfte went out with a good trip .The Charmer had but a moderate trip oat The Louisiana had not arrived at three o'clock yesterday. The Curlew left with a tow of empty barges for the coal-mines near Newbcirg, whence she will take a tow of coal to No. 18, In the Mississippi, for the use of the SU Louis and New Orleans lines The new smoke-stacks for the grand Armada were hauled down yesterday, and will be put up during the week. They aie huge and beautiful. It is hoped that the Armada will be ready to wheel Into line by Saturday, certainl3r by Wednesday next, and she will return to her old days of Wednesdays aiid, Saturdays. When she starts, out she w ill be the prettiest steamboat afloat The Lonlsville papers are filled with vain regrets that, " in consequence' of the want of public spirit and enterprise on the part of the citizens of Louisville, the People's Line between that city and Cincinnati has bursted np. The Cincinnati stockholders had promptly signed their share, 125,000, to build two new boats suited to the trade, but Louisville failed, and in consequence the Cincinnati stockholders determined to suspend operations. The Louisville folks think it is a ruse to get their stock at low rates. The Louisville papers are also down heavy on the Saints Charles and Nicholas, New Albany' built boats, and which the Loo-isviile papers way were built simply to sell, and that the People's Line Company were badly sold in buying them There has been a new shuffle and deal In the Cairo Packet Company, which will, we presume, serve to strengthen that institution. When furnished with specifications we will lay them before our readers The Great Republic, now being built at Shaustown, will carry three hundred tons. She will be launched in about three weeks. Hex length is 33.5 feet, beam 50. feet, and hold 9 feet. Her shafts, cranks, Ac, will be of wrought iron, '.lie jackstaff will be 100 feet long. The entire outfit of the Great Republic will be appropriately rich and costly. The arpets for the cabin have been ordered from Europe The Louisiana was loaded to over ti feet. Cox A Humphrey gave her 460 bills of flour, 70 barrels of meat, 15 hbds jaf tobacco, 50 coops of chickens; and some other freight The Gilmore had her guards in the water. She discharged some freight here The Natoma also had a big trip. lioats Leaving To-Da v. For Cairo. The superb and popular Nashville, Capt. Fred. Huston, is the regtr lar packet for Cairo and all wayyifnts, at three o'clock to-day. She has superior accommodations, and her officers are polite an'l attentive gentlemen. Val. Sorenson and Geo. Throop are her elegant Clerks. Geo. Jackson is her unsurpassed steward, and dispenses his hospitality with great liberality. Gleaning1) from Our Exchanges. Cincinnati. The Commercial of Saturday says: The weather was clear and pleasant, yesterday, with hard rain during the night previous. At Pittsburg the river is rising, with 5 feet in the channel. The Kanawha is stationary, with "i inches in ttie channel. Here the river nas risen 10 inches during the past It hours, with feet on the shoalest bars hence to LouisThe People's Line packet StAfirRes laid up yesterday on her arrival from Louisville, reshipping the freight received in tihe wharf boat for her, on the United States. We also hear her consort, the Wild Wagoner, laid up at Louisville yesterday. After running seventeen mouths the People's Line has suspended operations, leaving t he field clear to the o:d United states Mali Line. This is the longest and most formidable oompetion the United States Mail Line ever had to contend with, both com panies having carried freights and passengers at ruinously low or losing rales. Ills probable the St. Charles will tak the place of the Monsoon, in the Cincinnati and Poi tsnioutli trade. Captain John A. Williamson sold the Mariner to Mr. Morton, yesterday, 12,000. We also hear thatau interest one eighth of the Amazon was sold, at the rate of 824,00" for the entire boat. Lori.sviLl.K. Tiie Courier of Saturday sajs: . ', ' The river was still rising yesterday, with 5 feet 10 inches waXer iu the canal, in the evening, by llie mark. During th previous 21 hours it had risen 2 inclitfS at the head of the falls and 6 inches at Portland, The weather was rainy in the morning, but clear and rather warm in the evening. Before day and during the night a very heavy storm prevailed in this locality, followed bv high winds and heavy rains. A storm had been brewing all along the northern horizon from early twilight evening before last, and after nightfall the subdued hashes of lightning hashed athwart the sky, presenting a singular if not startling appearance, as no clouds were visible. As night's shadows deepened the slprui befan to rise, and soon after midnight it iroke forth with fury, followed by a heavy fall of raiu. On the falls last evening there were scant 4 feet water in the pass down the Indian chute, and the river about at a stand. The inailboal Gen. Buell was caught in
the storm at Bell's Branch, and had to come to in a hurry. That was about three miles above Westport. She reached port all safe.
The steamer B. L. Hodge had her chimi ne'K carried overboard by the sloTm She 18 ftt.1thJe lower wharf, and is being disuiuiKifu ui uer uiacuiuery. Captain Harmon, of the Tyrone, received a dispatch from Nashville, yesterday, reporting the Cumberland very low, with no prospect of a rise. St. Louis. The Democrat of Saturday says: There is still hope for stern wheel steamboatmen. The river is failing, or almost falling, and said boatsmen's spirits will soon he rising. There was a decline of probably one inch yesterday. No' rise of any consequence yet in the Upper Mississippi. But for those awful rains recently, there would hardly be a navigable river hereabouts. The Illinois has risen pretty rapidly all the way from Peoria, and will make itself felt here a little. We hear of no rise yet in the Missouri, but one Is expected. So far it has been, and probably ia yet, quite low. One beat is a whole day past due. Weather again very tine. Business fair. New Orleans. The Times of Thursday says: Rain, rain, rain, every day. Yesterday, shortly after meridian, heavy clouds be?;an to roll over. Shortly after two o'clock t commeuced to raiu, but in a more moderate manner than the daily showers that have paid us daily visits. Business yesterday on the levee, had some show of animation, compared with the few days previous. TRANSPORTATION STAR Union R, " UNION LINE." R. and Transportation Company. - .11 Line.
