A True Story. From the Little Corporal. I do not approve of ghost stories in general, but mine Lave some points in
them that I think may be of profit to the readers of the Litlk Corporal. I tell It to you as it was told to me bv one who was a witness of the mysteri-" ous scene. We lived in Michigan, said the narrator, in a new, unfinished house. There was an open garret, with the bare rafters running up to the peak. There was an open stairway in the garret-floor, so that we could hear plainly whatever was going on in the chamber. Father went a"way to town one day, and did not return till late in the evening; my mother, with three or four children, was sitting by the lamp at work, waiting for father's return. As we "sat quietly dozing, we heard a noise up stairs which sounded as though a ball had dropped three times. Mother took the light and went up stairs, but could see nothing; and she tried to speak unconeerncdly, when she told us the wheel was in motion. A large spinning wheel stood in the garrett, near it were the t swifts," (a sort of reel for winding yarn,) and both the swifts and wheel were moving! I stood with mother watchinga moment, and the wheel ceased turning, and all was quiet. We seated ourselves below. In a few minutes we heard the drop, drop, once more. Going up stairs, we found the wheel and swifts in motion again ! Mr ther now seemed frighteue The spirit-Iwere just be ginning their rappings in the country, and we at once concluded they had appeared in our house. The time passed wearily on, and every few minutes that terrible sound of drop, drop, drop on the floor, fell upon our ears; and whenever we looked up stairs, after the noise, we could see the wheel going! Never did I long for the appearance of any one as I ! longed for father's return that night. I W 1 , . . 1 1 1 . ll J ' J .1 . 1 i e iiuuuicti luxciucr aim suuuuerea. An hour passed and father came. We quickly told him the story, but he only laughed at us. He would like to see our ghost, he said. We requested him to be quiet a few moments. Soon we had the satisfaction of hearing the dull sound repeated. Father took the light and went boldly up stairs, and found the wheel and swifts turning as belore. lie waited till all was still, and went below. I do not know whether he was confused or not, but he only made fun -of our ghost; perhaps it was on purpose to drive our fears away. He heard the dropping two or three times, and each time went up to find the wheel whirling, liut at last he discovered the ghost! What do you think it was? Close the paper, little Yankee, and guess! A basket of dried fruit hung on the rafters. The rats would run up tbe rafter, steal a bit of fruit, thtn jump on to the wheel, from thence to the swifts, and setting the two in motion, spring to the floor and scamper away! This was the ghost, only this and nothing more. " A-ton F . Difference of "Time at Places.
