MONETARY & lOMUEIMlAL.
Monetary. Evansville, August 31. There is an active demand for mo:ey. The millers and wheat operators are in the market operating very freely, and the farmers, finding a good market and a fair price for their wheat, are selling all that they can conveniently spare from their crops. These operations cannot, owing to the short crop of wheat, continue very long, but while they do last require large means, and the banks must furnish the money. This creates an active demand for money, and rate are firmly maintained at 10 to 12 per cent, Cu rency being scarce, Exchange on New York Is freely offered, and in some instances concessions are made from the regular rates in buying and selling. No eha ,re has, as yet, been fully established in the rates. There is no great change in the price of Gold, ffhe closing quotation in the New York market at noon to-day was 147. The buying rate here was, during the morning, 15, and 146 was paid in the afternoon. The tendency of the market is downward. Government Bonds are lower to-day. Old !-2 i's declined but the presumption is that the market will rally, so we make no changes in quotations, which are as follows: Buying. Feldman A Co., to which we motfl particularly refer In our City News. The health of out city continues excellent, which is gratifying to the business community, at this usually dull season. Country merchants have shown considerable dread of contact with the cholera, and its presence in other places has had a serious Influence on trade. We are pleased to note, from the letter of our Cincinnati correspondent, and from the papers, that it has nearly disappeared from that city. Providence promises bountiful harvests, and we do not wish pestilence to interfere with the large trade which must, In its absence, flow to our commercial oenj'ers the coming FalL Changes in prices during the past week, and particulars of the market, will be found in the Review prepared by the Chamber of Commerce, published this morning. The Memphis Pott notices the beginning of the revival of business in that city. Cotton will so soon be in the market that merchants are inclined to make more liberal advances. The United States Treasurer has recently decided that coupons are as negotiable, at all times, as a bank note, and that he shall pay them when in the bands of a bona fide holder, even when it is known that They have been stolen. Owners who have been robbed of U. S. bonds and seven-thirty njotes should endeavor to protect themselves by entering a caveat at the office of the Secretary of the Treasury. The officers of the Treasury Department are busily engaged In the conversion of 730's Into 5-20's, the recent advance of the latter in 1 he foreign markets making this step a very advantageous one. The August statement of the Public Debt, it is stated, will show another large decrease in the principal of the debt. The gold rec eipts from customs for the first two months of the fiscal year, commencing July 1, will, it is estimated, reach nearly thirty million dollars. The Pri Current says: j A sira-wge siaie 01 an a:rs in nuanciai matters now exists. Gold is at 148. Sterling "Exchange 3 per cent, discount, Go'.d being transferred from London - to Naw York, and vice versa. 5-20's up to a point Ttt" London equal to 106 in our currency, and up to 114 In New York, therefore high er in .xew 1 om man in L.onaon. &u tnese Indicate a singular distortion of financial affairs, which cannot long continue so. Gold may be kept up tor some time longer, but, under these circumstances, Its fate is sure, sooner or later. Rostoa Fish Market. August 27. The new Mackerel catch comes in very slowlj , and coming, as it does, upon a bare market, with a good demand for consumption, prices continue to bold up remarkably for the season. We quote sales of shore No. 1 at $25 00r 2fi 00; No. 2 at $18 00h19 00; Bay No. 1 at $20 5021 50; No. 2 at $17 2517 50, and No. 3 at $13 25r...l3 50 per brl. New smoked herring are selling at ft570e per box for No. 1, and sealed new salmon is held at $75 00 per tierce. Boston Shoe and Leather Market. August 23. The boot and shoe market rules firm for all seasonable work, with a brisk jobbing demand from buyers of the interior. Our Jobbing houses and manufacturers are full of orders, ahead of buyers, from the principal cities In that section, though here in considerable numbers, have not been operating freely of late, and we hear of a few instances in which orders from this class of dealers have been countermanded on account 0 the dullness created by the cholera. But the delay is, of course, merely temporary ; we have no reason to think it will seriously affect the aggregate of fall trade ; consumers must have the goods sooner or later; and it Is the opinion of sagacious merchants that next month we shall have a greater rush of business in this line than has ever been experienced in September. The shipments of goods continue pretty heavy, and most buyers being bare of stocks, are in haste to get their purchases forwarded. Cincinnati Rry Goods Market. The Price Current says: Money has been and is still being distributed throughout the country to move the wool, wheat and flaxseed crops. This ought to enable the merchants to come into the markets full handed, as they doubtless will, when they consider that more can be done with $2,000 in cash than 25 or 50 per cent, more in promises to pay. The dry goods market probably never presented a better stock In quality, variety and quantity than Is offered this season, and prices are from ten to twenty per cent.
lower than they were one year ago. 1 Here has been no essential change in the prices in leading articles since our last. l(e desire to call the attention of our merchants to the Grayville (111.) Independent, and Olney (III.) Journal, as excellent advertising mediums. They are published in a region of country from when.ee Evansville should draw a large trade, and the merchants who would reap its profits must make themselves known to the business men of those localities.
Evannvflle Produce Market. COMPILED BY THE CHAM BEB OF COMMERCE. We again have the pleasure of announcing to our friends Una the business of the city continues its buoyancy, and that many branches of the trade have been particularly active during the past week. Prices, however, are not materially changed In the leading staples, with the exception of wheat, which has advanced fully ten cents per bushel. We announced in our last issue, that we should, from time to time, notice the various improvements and manfacturing interests of the city. In accordaace with that announcement we desire to speak of the immense improvements that are now being made upon our streets. During the fall of last year, some six squares were bouldered in the most substantial and improved style, at a cost of aboat$28,000. The present summer ourClty Council have contracted for, and the work is going bravely on, for the boulderlngol twenty-eight squares more, at a cost of $101,062 65. Thus it will be seen that there are but few, If any cities in the West that are improving faster than that of Evansville. Provisions Remain steady with prices unchanged. We quote Bacon, Shoulders 15c.; Sides lc; Clear Sides 20'2ic. ; Plain Hams 20c.; Sugar Cured 24c. ; Mess Pork $32 00; Lard in tierces 21c, keg 23. In a small way higher prices are demanded. !fi Flour Has been somewhat active, but prices are unchanged, and We quote Superfine, $6 507 00; Single Extra, $8 008 50; Double Extra, $9 0010 00: Extra Fin $1011 00; Fancy Old White Wheat, $11 0012. Flour from the new crop of Wheat is selling at $11 0 12 barrel. Groceries Have been particularly active, and changes have been made which will be found in our consolidated report.
