THE REBEL PRESS.
From thcEvansvllle Courier, 5th. Editorial Correspondence. Nebo, Hopkins Co., Ky., ) June 2, 1SGG j I left Madisonville on Wednesday, in company with some friends for Ne- ?. a very pleasant village in Hopkins County, and stopped under the nospitaDie root l lion. Charles S (ireen, the Representative from Hopkins and Webster. The readers of the Courier, at least , some or tnem would perhaps like to reaa a canaia portraiture of the " Unhung" as the gentlemen are found in this part of Uncle Sam's vineyard. I have circulated during the past few days very freely among the great and small " Unhungs " and feel competent to render a just description. I, therefore, unhesitatingly assert that an " Unhung" is a pretty clever, fellow, and does the thing by a stranger about right ; that is, if the aforesaid stranger is known to have been neither a sewine-machine. Tn'ann or ladies'-wardrobe thief, or a commissioned murderer, Federalist or Guerrilla. : ; exceptions, I found many kind friends among the "great Unhung," and a hospitality as genuine as natural. The people' of these counties being very generally " unhung," are, nevertheless "hting" to what is right, and repudiate all that is wrong. An Uuhun is as far superior to a negro thief, or a sewing machine thief, or a ladies' wardrobe thief, or any other sort of a Yankee thief, as heaven is superior to hell, or a sunshiny day to a, stormy night on the mountain gorges. - (iiye me the "great Unhung "all the time there is more love of Constitutional liberty of right, of honor, in one unhung Kentucky rebel than in fifty thousand Yankee house-gut-tevn, and that's what's the matter Be ingan "Unhung Rebel" ourself that is never having been hung, to our knowledge we naturally sympathize with the "Unhung," and positively assert, after mature comparison anil reflection, that Unhung Rebels are by tar more valuable to society than Hung Rebels, and a confounded ight more so than all the dead and most of the live Yankees. Ihe country about Nebo, as every Kentuckian in that section knows, is very fine the land being rich and the people generally well-to-do. We have in the villiajare one verv lare-P tnlonn factory by Mr. R. C. Slaughter, well known in Evansville as one of the cleverest sort of Unhung Rebels, who has a large number of niggers at work stemming, pressing, and preparing tobacco for market, and also another by Graham & Laughlin. Tobacco, as at lUOTiuiuerpuinw in tnis section, seems to be the product of wealth, and the EESP.l4rR-- justseiflyBLtJooks s" noyance of the Freedmen's Bureau, a pretty large crop will be raised. But while referring to the Freedmen's Bureau it is proper to say that Mr. Captain, Colonel or General John L. Peyton, the Freedmen's Bureau Agent of this county, so-called, but who really has absolute African dominion over1 only about 150 acres of land, has gone to Louisville to get a reciment of military to arrest Judge Fowler, of the Circuit Court, for some decision or instructions given that did not puit his African Highness. What is to be accomplished is not known, or what the military are to do when " they come; but one thing is certain if the Government wants peace always, and a cordial and Christian community of interests between the people of this country, the rulers ought to send a regiment out to gather up the Freedmcn is Bureau Agents, and ship them to Mexico or h II. Ihe poor negroes in this State are the principal suflerers from this New England humbuggery, which was intended to populate the county jails. State penitentiaries, and hell generally with the poor victims. The negroes seenr well disposed, and would no doubt, if left alone, and this is what the people want. It is not ownership they care for, but labor they want. The farmers want laborers, but cannot get them. The accursed,' infernal and damnable Bureau gets between the negro and the farmer, and destroys the efficiency of the one and the crops ot the other. Sambo is well disposed, and would get along very well with his late master, if these blasted Bureau devils were discharged. They act as emis saries, and although some ierliars intend well, they all do a positive in jury. 1 have attended upon the courts of Judge r owler, and I do honestly be lieve that it is impossible for a man to be more impartial and straight for ward than he is, and , those who run around on the t reedmen s .Bureau business, do so purposely to create trouble, and are laboring for that end. No dependence should be placed upon anything said by them, or respect shown tor tneir uianoiieai attempts. I heard of a nasty ease jof New England miscegenation in Webster county, which ought to encourage the New England Religious hypocrites to further efforts in the free-love line. There is a Freedmen's Bureau nigger, out on ; a 'place not far from Cairo, who is so .black that a black cat covered with tar in the bottom of a three story cellar in hell at night would look like an angel of light beside him, who is "keeping" a white woman for his t" helpmate." This poor, abandoned creature was no doubt sent out from New England for negro society, and is very probably now appointed by the Sharpe'e rifle fraternity of "Christians" as on a par with thera.
On Saturday evening I attended a special exhibition of the musicscholars of Miss Julia Bradley, who have attained a high proficiency alike creditable to the lady teacher and her scholars. Mrs. Bronaugh has a fine school here, at which the children of most of the families in the neighborhood attend. She is very kindly cherished in the neighborhood, for her many

He was long the able editor of the Hopkinsville Press. a very able and influential newspaper. lie was beloved by an extensive ac quaintance, and is one of the many victims of damnable persecutions, which did all toward dividing the people. No charge was ever preferred against him, yet he ended his days in a Lincoln Kentuckv bastile. God fonrive the satrans of that accursed power that was nourished on the low est passions of human and political depravity known as Republicanism. From the Daily Evening Star, Austin, Texas. There is a nauer nublished in San Antonio called tiie Jla-nrv. -which, ad vocates the election of the Pease ticket, and, as a matter of course, indorses the Rump Congress. That paper can talk to its own kith and kin and go unrebuked, but when it so far forgets its province, as to endeavor to natter ex-Confederate soldiers into a support of its miserable dogmas, it will meet, at their hands, that rebuke which its satanic coadjutor once received, when he presumed Upon the long suffering of. his master to tempt him. We are an ex Confederate soldier, and loved the Confederacy that is now numbered with the things that were. At the same time Vie hate, with a holy horror, those who, with a pharisaical love of the Union, had not the manly boldness to stand up boldly for either section. Thevh sve now assumed a different attitude, and uiiu mucavu . 1 1 1 1 i.t 1 Lilt: cover ot Unionism, to brine our coun try under the rule of the miserable hell-hounds that disgrace power at the National Capitol. We can say to him and his clan, that we hate them now more than ever. . We, in common with every soldier who upheld the Southern Cross, yield a cordial obedience to the laws of the whole country, and earnestly desire to see a restoration of the civil government. " Brick Pomeroy," the editor of the La C rosse (Wis.) Democrat, is the unconscionable scoundrel who publicly rejoiced over the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. He is one of the mean whites who was owned, body and soul, by the slave drivers, and cannot get over the impression yet that he must down in the dirt to secure their favor. Recently, this scab of s'.avery wrote a let-ti.r,t'!-Biu ArJ?f" a Georgia humorist, in which he tells Bill to be of good cheer, for Jtlie majj atkth,e.f,.W;,eucl-of trie. ..... no as Cincoln was; and assures lilm that no more hirelings will be stmt into the South to prig and steal, and do other things disagreeable to a people with whom "Brick " promised to have a pleasant reunion when fi the man at the other end of the avenue " gets things straightened out. A more disgusting creature than this moral companion of assassins does not crawl on the earth. If the Democracy of Wisconsin countenance him they are less rospectable than we have given them credit for. Cin. Commercial. , ' The Commercial has our thanks tor its compliments. It tells some truths, viz.: Wc are editor ot the La Crosse Democrat we rejoiced that Lincoln it i i i . . was called noine we sam jonnson was a statesman more than a low wit, etc. we wrote a letter to mil Arp, so called, and we look to a pleasant re union with the fcouth at some time but never under Abolition rule. But we were never owned by a slave driver, not a bit more than we have been awed or silenced by the minions of tyranny-than we have been driveu from our position bj' the hirelings of power, the libels of Abolition editors, the ropes, bayonets or prisons threatened,, or the bribes of the late admin istration. We did thank God for culling Linoln home.. If Lincoln is in Heaven, as ADolitionists say, ne is netter on than he was at Washington, beset by thieves, Abolitionists, army contractors, offiew seekers and gapping listeners to his smutty jokes. As a friend of Lincoln we thanked ou tor calling so great and good a man home, before he should become disgusted with the Annas, the Jaues, the Thaddeuses, the Benjamins, the Charleses, the Freds, and others ot the leaders of the God and Morality party. We thanked God for calling Lincoln into the presence and company of Democrats, as he is if in heaven. The poor President suffered enough from being with abolitionists on earth, and we thanked God for calling him be yond their reach or influence here or j hereafter. Whatever is, is right. Gop, who j rules' us all, wanted Lincoln removed ! He made Booth his agent no one ! but God is to blame for Lincoln's ; death God is never to blame we ; who are Christians should thank Tlim j for everything; we do so thank Him ! he who does not thank God is no j Christian those who assail us are no ' Christians' We believe the country is better off j now than when Lincoln was alive. We belieye more in statesmanship i. : i , than in niirlrer songs or in humorous yarns in time of war. We believe Lincoln was a mere man putty in the hands of the traitors and thieves, known latterly as abolitionists. . , r, We believe God saw that he was not useful, even if ornamental, and removed him to make room for a better man. We believe J ohnson is a better man than Lincoln if he had not bccD,

surely the great Republican party would not have gone out of the Union for a candidate for the Vice-Presidency when they had so many good, pure, nonoraoie statesmen in the JSorth ! We believe the country would be better off to-day if every republican, ana a Dontion traitor, meddler, sycophant, apologist, thief, traitor or tool of traitors, were in the bosom of Abraham. We believe further that the Aboli tion party is going to the devil, liter ally, and we do not care how nniek. And we still further believe that ' Urick Pomeroy has more true friends in the country than Lincoln ever had that we do not care the snap of a finger for the good or ill opinion of all the Abolition editors in the land that we shall edit this paper just as we see fit, and do what not one ot our assailants dare do tell the truth without fear or favor.
