irhe Fenian War ada. in CanSnxronder of Fenian Prisoners Demanded by the British Government. late Foreign News. FROM BOSTO.V Boston, June 3. A meeting of Tenians was held this afternoon at Head Centre, on Hanover Street, which was quite numerously attended. 1 'The speakers made strong appeals for money, asserting that volunteers were in alntnJar.f o, hut without liberal contributions they could not he scut to the front. About 12,000 in iuonej was raised. s 'j'tSiuus are concentrating licre in farce. No demoubtratiuiid have been jmade by them yet. , ...
- FKOMMOSTBE ! r 1 ' Montreal, C. E., June 3. Two '""regiments of regulars, about 5,000 vol- ' unteers, and three batteries of artillery, and sixty men and officers, from the war sloop Pliades, now in , the harbor here, left here last night, and a naval brigade, to protect the Corn' -wall Canal. A large number of sailors are to follow. , There are two inen-of-war on the way from, Quebec to this city. . . . -1 - FROM WATERTOWX., "
4 "VVatertown, N. Y., June 4. Gen. t Meade and staff passed here this morning en route north. General Sweeney and 150 Fenians were on the same w train. The United States Marshal r here seized nine boxes of arms and accoutrements on Saturday evening's train. All quiet at Ogdensburg this morning. FROM BFFFAIiO. ' :- .V Buffalo. May 4. All quiet on the Niagara. The arms of the Fenians are on board the Michigan ; also, their colors and those captured by them at the .battle, of -liidgeway, which the Canadians call Sinieston llichre Buffalo is filled with special reporters from all parts of the country, but there is absolutely nothing transpiring at this point. , While we lad assembled in, this city some two or three regiments, Fenians, well armed, equipped and
drilled, and while liberal detachments have been arriving here from abroad during the past week, amounting to more than another thousand, the
. whole augmented armies in the field
only amounted to about 1,000 men. Where the balance are, it is difficult to understand. It is a significant fact that among the 3,000 or 4,000 troops
at Ft. Erie yesterday, not a Catholic Irishman was to be found, and not an - . officer of the force was Irish. t . LATER. A gentleman just from the other side, states to us positively that at the battle of Ridgeway, only four of the ' Canadian volunteers were-killed and about twenty-five wounded, three seriously. The report in the papers that Lieut. t Col. Beammoth was killed, is pure fiction, no such officer being with the forces. Infact, the only officers killed or wounded on the British side, so far as known here, are. Ensign McEacherri, killed,- and Kouth, of the 13th H battallion, severely wounded; Lieut. Campbell, arm broken by a bullet; Capt. J. B. Bousted, of Toronto, Queen's : Own," not dangerously, and Ensign Gaver, leg brokeu, and doing well. c i.', - eir. Meade and U. S.. District Attorney Dart, will arrive "at Pottsdani this noon, and -will look after Gen. Sweeney'and his base of stipplies. The report that Head Centre P. O.
Dav had been arrested -on Canadian soli is uuiiu, but he is not visible with the naked eye on this side. ' - A ridiculous rumor is published by the iW of this city, that Kingston has been captured. FOREIGN SEWS. Farther Point, May 4. The steamer Nova Scotia, from Liverpool "24th,- Londonderry 25th, passed here this morning. . 1 he political situation was unchanged. More failures are reported, and financial anairs were gloomy. The steamer Scotia, from New York was reporttd' off Brookhaven on the 25th ult. New York, May 4. The steamer City of Loudon has arrived, front. Liverpool 23d, Queenstown 24th ult. Papers of Thursday contain the following items : The London Express announces the suspension of llooinson, Trul & Co., bankers, of Manchester. France will have the army on a war footing in a fortnight, ready to he placed in observation on German and Italian frontiers. The Italian and Austrian Governments have announced the intention to respect Swiss neutrality in the event of war. A paris telegram, 23d ultimo, says : The Moniteur Du Soir states that France, England, and Russia dont wish to take up the position of arbitrators, but solely to propose a basis of certain deliberations, and to direct the ' discussion of the Conference t the point constituting the cause of collision. The Fenian army withdrew from Fort Erie early yesterday morning, retiring to the American shore, the best way they could. - Thirty-two of their number were captured. Colonel O'Neil, Commander of the expedition is among them. The prisoners are in the hands of the United States authorities. 1 he British troops occupied Fort Erie soon after the evacuation. It is stated that the late movement is merely a feint, and that the important move will be made immediately from an other point. That point is most likely to be Osdensburff. the town ot rres cott and the Canadian seat of Government. Ottawa, beine the objective boints. Cornwall. Sarina and Wind sor, are also expecting au attack at anv moment. Two thousand Fenians are reported opposite St. Johns, threatening1 Montreal, and 2,000 ot 3,000 are near Cornwall.. Heavy re inforcements are arriving at Montreal hourlv. and two British men-of-war are en route from Quebec for that bomt ,r.Th Fnlaurfcanips ti-iciaitji; cf Uguensburg, at ftt. Albans, are quiet. Reinforcements are arriving hourly. The Collector of the Port of Og densburg recived instructions, yester dnv. to prevent anv crossing to the Canada shore, in his neigborhood. The revenue cutter Chase, carrying two Dahlgren 24-DOunders and a 10 pounder, was placed at his disposal, with orders to sink any vessel carrying Fenians across the river. Every elfort is being made by the authorities to preserve our neutrality. From every part or the country the Fenians are moving ior the border, notwithstanding the disastrous news. Gov. b en ton will not call out the militia unless the General Govern tnent orders it. Gen. Sweeney left Albany yesterday for Potsdam. The sale of bonds at the Roberts Headquarters was quite brisk yester day. The news of the surrender of Col O'Neil was not regarded as a disaster, and the movement of men to the front went ou as briskly as ever. New York, June 4. A proclama tion to the "people of British America, igned o. A. .Sweeney, Major gener al Commanding the Armies ot Ire land." is published here this morning After reciting the grievances suffered bv Ireland at the hands of Great Britain, it states that war is now De ing made to deliver Ireland from the tvrant. the desnoiler. and the robber. It says the true point of attack at present is the Canadas, but assures tlite people that war is not made: upon them, but the Government which rules over them. It appeals to 4he Irishman, Frenchman, and Ameri can, in the provinces, to rise and aid in the movement. New York, June 3. A Montreal dispatch of last night says the Royal Mail steamer Himalaya has arrived at Quebec with the Canadian Hundred, or Prince of Wales regiment, together with the 43d regulars, direct from Malta, to' meet the defence of ihe St. Lawrence. Two gunboats have! been improvised from tug boats plying in these waters, eauipped and manned from Her Majesty s corvets. S The Plyades are lying at this point, and the Aurora, at (Quebec. i These gunboats will be en nipped with Armstrong guns and 12-pound howitzers. They sail to-night with sealed orders. The 7th fusileers from Quebec, with the 4th battalion of the rifle brigade from this city, are under marching orders to-night. Reinforcements are now known to be on their way here from Halifax.
