We are pleased to note the lact ,tnat a hundred or two of the friends of Mr. Robert Grierson best known as " Old Bob" have tendered him a complimentary benefit before he leaves our city. We are gratified at this manifestation of ; the ; appreciation by our citizens "of industry, perseverance, and gentlemanly deportment. Bob Grierr son is a gentleman both on and off the stage, and has been the mainspring, the very life of the New Metropolitan. In whatever character he appeared, he acquitted himself with credit; and his familiar voice and honest smiling face was always 'welcomed by all who met him. Now we hope he will receive a material, tangible, proof of public esteem, and we therefore ask that, on Thursday night, all who ever do go to the theatre will secure seats or a spot to stand on, and Jet the house be crowded until there shall not be a foot of the floor unoccupied. A good bill will be presented, with the whole strength and talent of the excellent company. Let. "Old, Bob" have .a rousing bumper. ' ' , 1

THE , URDINANCE ltlGIIT OF YV AY Granted for Forty Years. In consoipience of the lateness of the hour the Council held on Monday night, we were obliged to leave before that body adjourned. The report of the Council proceedings, as published yesterday morning, 6hows that the ordinance granting the right of way to construct street railways in the city "fcas lost, thei vote on all the. amend ments offered on the fioal passage of the ordinance, being a tie-1 Mf. Mills being absent, and the Mayor having no vote in the passage of ordinances. The ordinance as rejected, granted the right of way for fifty , years. Mr. Reitz moved to amend by striking out " fifty," and substituting , " twentyfive," instead; the vote being taken on the amendment, Messrs. Torrence, Miller, Reitz !and; Smith, voted foj-, and Messrs. Hunnell, Deau, Wiltshire and Heilman, against it, which,' being, that " thirty "5 "se sub'stitusd fqr "fifty.V The vote being taken, rja tie, was lost.-, Mr. Miller then movejd suited like ' the ' preyior13 motion i to amend, the same gentlemen voting in the 'affirmative,' and the same, inhe negatived The' vote was then taken on the passage of the ordinance as read, which resulted in a tie, Messrs. Heilman,, Wiltshire, Dean and Hunnell voting for, and Messrs. Reitz, Miller, Torrence and Smith against its passage. Afterwards the vote was re considered,, and a 'motion made to amend by striking 'out . " fifty," and substituting , " forty." This amend ment was carried, Messrs. Miller, Hun nelf, '" Dean", Wiltshire and Heilman voting for it. It is thought that the amendment will be acceptable to the company. One mile and a half of the railway is to be completed against the first day of January, 1SG3, and an other against 1870. , We believe that no doubts are entertained ' about the construction of th6 roads as agreed unon in the ordinance or charter. It will certainly prove a great benefit to th city. - 1 1 Backed Down. workingmen had a pleasant day for the picnic yesterday. We spent about one hour there most pleasantly. Everything had been arranged so a3 to afford pleasure-seekers an opportunity for enjoyment, and nothing was wanting but the numbers.
