MONETARY & COMMERCIAL Monetary. Evans ville, May 25. The money market is without essential change: the demand for loans being equal to the supply, and rateare unchan ged, say 8 to 10 per cent. Exchange is in good demand, with a limited supply, and the rates continue firm at our usual quotations. The fluctuations in the New Yorkrgold market have been very violent for the past few days, and on yesterday it touched 141J4, and closed at 139. The tendency is still upward. This being the first Price Current from our Merchants' Exchange, some inaccuracies; may have crept In, but up on the whole, we can assure Our friends that it represents our market as fully as could be expected under the circumstances, , ,a.p t Our general market for the past week has exhibited but little animation in consequence of the flue weather for agricultural purposes, which has reduced the arrival of all kinds of produce very material! v. ! , , I f . CORN and FLOUR being our principal staples, we may say that Corn is scarce, with but little demand. We quote prime White, in new gunnies, at 70 to 73c; Mixed and Yellow at OS to 70c, with a firm, if not an upward tendency. FLOUR In consequence of a slight decline in the Eastern markets during the forepart of the week, Flour had a downward tendency, but recent advices from New Orleans, and an advance in gold, has stiffened the market somewhat. .We may quote Superfine, S7 to SK; Extra, 88 to SO: Double Extra, $9 to 810; Treble Extra, J10 50 to 811 50, and fancy brands, made of old White Wheat, $12 to 815. FEED Corn in the ear Is very scarce and In active demand. It sells readily at 48 to 50c per bushel at the wharf or depot, store rates being higher. Bran is also very scarce, and in demand at 818 00 to 1 (Xt, in bulk. Hay is rather weak, with a fair supply, and prices range from 811 50 to 12 00 for Prime, in small lots with good cooperage. CORN MEAL Is in small demand, with but little in the market. We quote Unbolted at 82 75 to 3 00: Cold Bolted, 83 00 to 3 25. GROCERIES Of all kinds have been firm and active during the week, without any material change in prices from our consolidated report. . -- PROVISIONS Have been steady, with an upward tendency. We may quote Mess Pork per bbl, at 831 to 32; Clear Sides 18 to lc per ft: Plain Hanu 19 to 20c; and Sugar Cured, 22 to 24c POULTRY The arrivals during the week has embraced several large lots, mostly for shipment, and prices have ranged from 87 00 to 8 00 per dozen, in good coops, on wharf, and for city trade prices, have been proportionately less. ' BUTTER Prime is in good demand at 20 to 22c. , ' EGGS Also n good demand atSlfl to $18 per barrel.t KHi I X 1 ; H. ' , Our Drv Goods merchants have large and well-selected stocks on hand, but they, too, have felt that the week has been dull, and. as a consequence, their transactions have not been verv heavv. The Hardware and Queensware houses are also well stocked, ana prices are nonv inaL The im nortat ion of Queens ware di rect from Europe, for the past few days, has -been. very heavy, and the supply is much bove the demand. Tbi BOOT and SHOE trade has been somewhat active, but mostly for city retail dealers. There was a gay crowd of the beauty and the chivalry of the city on board the Taraseon, filling her spacious cabins, and Joining in the sweet " mazes of the giddy dance," where "Music rose with its voluptuous swell," " "Where eyes looked love to eyes which - spake again, -And all went merry as a marriage bell." But Captain Lusk and John Pendleton proved themselves masters of the situation, and entertained their guests with princely magnificence. ; 1 All were . well pleased. We are glad to learn as we were sure we should that Capt. Liter has never given any authority to his agents to discriminate against Evansville, in soliciting freight, and will not allow It to be done. His interests arid his sympathies are with Evansville, and he is desirous of doing all he can for her welfare; while at the same time he does not purpose showing any partiality for routes for shipments, believing," very properly, that that is a matter to be decided by the shipper. Captain Liter is too good a steamboat-man to take a position contrary to his interests.
