Han. R. W. Thompson. On our second page will be found an interesting epeech, delivered in Bedford, Lawrence County, on Friday last, by this distinguished politician and orator. Mr. Thompson's historical review of the past action of the Democratic party, and of the present purposes of its Copperhead successor, are given in a masterly manner, and the repugnance he expresses toward any affiliation with the latter, must be shared by every honest man who sustained the country during its desperate struggle with the rebellion. : "VVe can imagine no more humiliating position for a sincere supporter of - Lincoln
and Johnson, than to find himself associated with those miserable, rebelsympathizing Copperheads whose opposition to the war prolonged the contest, added thousands of loyal soldiers tothe dead list, tnd jcaused the expenditure of hundreds of millions of treasure, which might otherwise have been saved'. ,J.' '-, ' rfT : Mr. Thompson has always been a conservative politician, and has often been denounced as being pro-slavery in his views and feelings . .What he says, therefore, on ,he subjeet 'of reconstruction, is especially worthy the attention of the .conservative gentlemen with whom, he has always acted. The bitterness with which the , speech is assailed by the unscrupulous organs of the Confederate Democracy shows also; that its . telling truths were well aimed ' and ' struck in the right direc tion. One of the surest indications that a speaker need want as to whether he is on the right track, is the manner in which his utterances are received by the Copperheads.' - If they mani test anger ana mss louaiy, ne may congratulate himself as beinsr riirht. If they approve his sayings, he will do well to revise them. ' . Proscription. Colonel Sloo has been removed as Postmaster at . Cairo, and Colonel Ghaham has been appointed in . his stead. In noticing the fact the Cairo Democrat says : " In this connection, we wish to say that for Mr. Sloo, as a Citizen and gentleman, we entertain the highest regard. He is respected by his neighbors for his many virtues, and we' would not, for any consideration, attempt to sully his fair name. But his politics are execrable, and we are unwilling, if we can prevent it,' to permit the enemies of the President's policy to occupy places of profit, and use t he money they make to aid the cause of Radicalism. For this reason we worked to secure hla removal from office, and for this reason we rejoice that he has been succeeded by a gentleman who will not use the club of public patronage, put in his hands by the President, to bruise the heads of the President's fxiends in this nart'of Illinois. :- : One would be almost 'led to think that the Democrat was the power be hind' the throne ' greater - than the throne itself. It confesses that Mr. Sloo had been removed, solelv for opinion's sake, notwithstanding he is highly respected by all his acquaintances, without regard to party, yet the Democrat worked for his removal. Why; should Jhe.Demcrat hate influence with the President a paper notoriously disloyd, and a friend to the rebels all through -the war? Every one.iamfliari witn its course" iknbws how it denounced President Lincoln; and also President Johnson when he was a candidate for Vice-President and after his inauguration. Is it indeed true that such papers as the Cairo Democrat is' influencing the President of the United States? ' If such is the case, we have failed on perilous times, indeed. " " Waat Xext ? The Memphis Avalanche records what it calls an "unprovoked outrage," namely; a white man throwing a brick-bat and striking a negro in the back the negro not having done anything to deserve such brutal treatment? We were surprised upon reading it, and wondered if, indeed, the Avalanche . had turned Abolitionist and nigger lover. But, upon a second reading, we saw the cause of this virtuous indignation. The editor had discovered that the white man wore blue breechea, and, like, the, bull at the sight of the red cloth, his indignation boiled over; ; He at once concluded the white man had ben a Federal soldier, and his sympathies were with Cuffee. -' -Not that he loved the negro more, but he loved the ex-Yankee soldier less. . Had the negro been outraged in , like manner by an exConfederate soldier, he. would, have been lauded for the deed. ; , ':' The Unconditional Union men of Virginia, presided over by John Mi nor Botts, take ground in favor of universal amnesty and equal suffrage, irrespective of color. .. What do the Democratic supporters of the admin istration think of .that asVbasis of compromise?

We are happy to say that we indorse President Johnson in the above order with all our mind, soul and ( Strength. How is it with the Democracy in this part of the State? Do they indorse this wholesale interference with the people of Mobile in their right to elect a Judge of the Probate Court? Indorse the President. Every era teaches its lesson. The times we live in are not without instruction, The ' American people must be taught if they do not already feel that treason is a crime, and must be punished; that the Gov ernment will not always bear with its enemies; that it is strong, not only to protect, but to punish.." Andrew Johnson. ; "Let it be engraven on every heart that treason is a crime, and traitors shall suffer its penalty." Ibid. "I know men love to have, their names spoken of In connection with acts of mercy, and how easy it is to yield to this impulse. But we must not forget that what may be mercy to the Individual is cruelty to the State." ibid. We , indorse the President. His sentiments, as expressed above, are our sentiments his opinions our opin ions his wishes our wishes. , ' ' :t ' Another Fire In Cairo. ;1 r Cairo seems to be a city of disasters. It is all the time being threatened with water of devastated with fire,";' Three or four destructive fireshave occurred there in the past few months. The last one occurred Von . Tuesday morn-, ing, about 4 o'clock, and destroyed 13 buildings. It is impossible to tell by the very verbose and highly indefinite account in the, Denwcrat of Wednesday, whereabout the fire occurred, or the total ; loss involved.'' ' The buildings, burned, however Vseem to have been' of an inferior character, or property is very cheap in Cairo. The highest value placed on any " building destroyed,' we believe, i8$4,500.'We trust the owners ?f the grounds will be able to replace them with buildings of greater value. Among other ' losses was, unfortunately, one of the pumps with which the city is saved thrice annually from being submerged. But there is a prospect of dry weather, and that is one comfort. Importations and Exportation for Eight Months. - The present importations largely exceed those' of any former period. Duringeight months the imports at New York have amounted to $203,532,54. The largest amount for any corresponding period was $137,229,837 for -eight months of the fiscal year ending with June, 18C4. The exports exclusive of- specie for the same nfonths first mentioned amounted to $145,003,628, leaving a balance against" us of $58,529,126. No comment is necessary. . . ? , Ring of the True Metal. " The call of the Republican Central Committee of Illinois for a State Convention, is addressed to the " Republican Union voters of Illinois, who are in favor of keeping traitors out of the halls of Congress, and of asserting and maintaining the right of the loyal people, through their Representatives in Congress, to fix and determine the condition on which the States lately in rebellion shall be permitted to participate in he government of the United States." - Assessor's Notice.
