There is a great scarcity of houses to rehlj in the city now, notwithstanding the exceeding high prices asked. In strfclling around the city yesterday, we met at least a half a dozen men, mostly "mechanics, who ; were, in search of cheap and comfortable houses. If there were plenty of cheap tenement houses in the city; 'suitable for mechanics, it would be a great advantage, and add materially to the productive interests of the city. In other cities in fhe West, this want has been met by building associations, and the investment has paid handsomely; be-
