His numerous steamboat friends will be delighted to meet him On the grade again. LotjisviLLE. The OourCer of Monday says:""' - ' . . v.. The river eontinues falling fast, with only five feet nine inches water in the canal by the- mark. - JJaring the previous forty-eight hours it had fallen twelve inches at the head of the falls, and three feet at Portland, the foot of the fails a very considerable fall in the stage of water, which, if it continues lor a day or two longer, will very much restrict navigation. On the falls last evening there were three feet niite inches water in the pass, down the Indian chute, and the river Rtill falling. In the morning there were barely 4 feet in the chute, and the Nick Longworth, under the guidance of Capt. Pinckney Varble, was safely taken through the chute to 1 Portland. She had near 100 tons of freight on board, and one knuckle slightly rubbed the rocks, as she was drawing all the water. The Cumberland was falling slowly Saturday evening, with four feet water on Harpeth Shoals. The Tempest left Nashville Friday .evening for this port. 1 St. Louis. The Vemocrat of Monday says : TherrtvertS declining here" fast." All the" upper rivers continue steadily on the decline. We anticipate having to report in a few days, boat aground in the different rivers; .The weather is sultry. Business is fair. . Tonnage in port last evening, light, but ample for the demand. ; Memphis. The Argut, referring to the bad boys that infest the wharf, says that six of the " Mackerels " were arrested yesterday morning and fined twenty-five dollars apiece, and being deficient in funds they will be compelled to try their hands on the fracturing of adamant instead of throwing .lit at steamboatmen.! . Eleven more have since been arrested. . , The Appeal, of Saturday says: ',' ,' .- The weather yesterday was very warm and sultry, though business on the levee seemed to improve by it, as there was much more activity than at any time within the past ten days. The river is still falling rapidly at this point, and since our last report has declined ten inches. . .. . . ,
The mate of the Memphis was arrested yesterday at the instance of a negro who had "jumped " that boat and claimed $10 for services rendered. He was taken be
fore the " Buro" which he gave a piece of ins iiiinu, na ior wnicn ne was sent to the Stockade. If this state of things continues there will be but one course left for steamDoatmen to fo'-'.owj viz. : not to employ ne- : xi is cenamiy a great outrage that negroes can claim and receive pay for ser vices rendered. ", New Orleans. The' Times of the 16th says:; V , . "; Business inn thp levpe vesterdftv seemed to be a litle more active than on Its predecessor, while arrivals and departures were not ofa great number. . , - r . . ; The weather since our last, was about the same as on the previous day; Rather close in the forenoon, but in the aiernoon a heavy shower fell, Which, cooled the at mosphere to a considerable extent. The arrivals were the Louisville from Louisville, and the Olive Branch And At lantic from St. Louis.
