What has been done in the way of providing good music on: the occasion of the soldiers' meeting next Saturday? Can't some of the young men organize a singing club? The meeting being held, as it' will be, in the day-time, the band may not. be in attendance. Let there be music. Still Organizing. The soldiers of Spencer, Knox, Daviess and Posey Counties, are preparing to organize associations similar to the one to be formed in this County. The good work is still going on. Let no soldier or sailor who has been honorably dis charged the- sen-ice of the United States, stay away from the meeting on Saturday. A good time is exDected. ,Up Again. That infernally mean Copperhead office-holder," who ore down the poster calling, a Soldier's meeting for next Saturday, is informed that another one has been posted! in the same place, to which his especial ttention is directed. . Can't he be per suaded on to tear that one down ? j A man so mean as he is would equalize himself with the blackest negro in the . i Whipped his Wife John Jarvis wa'a fined $20 and cost, by Esquire W alker, for whipping his wife, tie was also bound in a peace warrant; in the sum of $50 00.' There is no doubt but Dr. A.'s enterprise will prove a brilliant success: Reports of the mst favorable, character in regard to .his medicines are of daily' occurrence. ' A Case Under the Law. Esq. Walker has had a case under the new law defining assault and battery. One Henry Schafer did, as the affidavit set forthi by words and ' gestures provoke two colored gentlemen to make, an assauit on tne person 01 said ;chalQr, for which Esq. Walker fined him 3, with $6 75 costs. Persons disposed ito become, quarrelsome will do' well o make a note of -this. 4 The law was bo doubt made to protect small men froan abuse by larger men. 1 !" The - Directory.' Mr. Bennett, who is canvassing our city for Williams' new Directory; infornis ua that he is progressing finely. with his work and will 60on have it completed, ite is satisfied that the- growth of car city has been rapid ..and permanent since he last canvassed it for a Directory. I He finds the houses aU'dccupied and many of them much crowded. In. one house, in.Xamasco, he found no less than ten' families. - That would do ' pretty well for ' tenement houses in some of our large cities! Mr.- Bennett's faithfulness .in getting up his Directories cannot fail to make them valuableto every business man in the city, and we presum he will secure a good list of subscribers. His Directors, it will be remembered, will contain the latest revised list of postoffices in the United States, as well as a correct register 'if our city officials
Donation Party. The friends of Rev. B. F. Rawlins, Presiding Elder of the M. E.. Church for this District, propose giving him .a donation party on Thursday evening of the present week, in the basement rpoms of the " Trinity Chapel .fronting on Chestnut Street. . Mr.;RAWLiNS j has endeared himself to a large circle of friends by his kindness -and faithfulness as a minister, and we presume they will manifest their regard by turning out in force on Thursday evening. Vi The - meeting of .-persons
from different, parts of the District will be pleasant, and the object aimed at is sufficiently worthy to arouse' an interest on the part of every - member of the Church On 'Change. The first sale 'Change ; yesterday was effected on by Sharpe & , Smith, of 31" barrels Super fine' Flour at $6 10, to George T Chandler, " ' i Willard & Porter sold 50,brla of Lime to .Sharpe & Smith at $1 30 The above constitute the sales for the day. "The attendance was not as large as xould haS'e been expected. but the meeting was highly interesting and pleasant. A committee was j ap pointed to ascertain the cost of secur ing regular market reports by tele graph, which Committee will report to-day.. The meeting will be held at Baird & Start's, on Water Street, at 3 o'clock. It was also decided to es tablish a price current, which will be published once a week at least. Com mission Merchants brought specimens of flour which were exhibited on 'Change,. These meetings are. likely to'prove beneficial to the trade,5 end will be. kept up from xiay to: day. A free discussion was had relative to business in ' general and matters of importance to .the . trade considered. All who feel an interest in building up a Board of. Trade in this city are invited to be present to-day, ,mit - ; 1 lie enort that is now being made to estaDusn a live iUercjiants jxthange: is, we think, a: move ' in 'the right direction, and we sincerely hope it will prove a success. A few . energetic go-ahead men cau make it successfnl, and those who have attended express i themselves as. well satisfied with the prospect. . The meeting today will, no doubt, prove an interesting one. Those who can spend an hour will find the meeting of the commission ' mercjhants Loth interesting and pleasant, and n they may make it profitable. - ,Wc hope to see a good attendance of the business men. - i Great . Titles Cheaply Won. iYe frequently notice jii Copperhead exchanges that ill-natured allusions are m&de .to who hate f di-ved faithfully' .their 1 Governmeui. A few days si nee' we', obtecved 'n ' old story in r the Indianapolis Herald, reproduced, with slight-'variation, jin iwhicjtytn' wisJ represen ted thatlsome fellow had thrown a stick, at "a dog and hit a number of Federal officers, of .various grades, at Washington City. A .friend of ours, who not long since "risiled "the 1 capital, tells a story of an adventure of his in Copperhead society while in that city recently. At a room in one of the hotels he was introduced to a half-dozen of the unterrified, all quite salubrious. His friend began thus: "This, Sir, is Col. BJ MajorOD.Hi: GreniLS. U Capk L.'i &'cP each one of the half-dozen having a military title. Qur friend of course thought be wag just in .clover, being in the midst oi - men of the t "right stripe, and, at ' once commenced to converse freely: '' Speaking to Col. B., he said, "Colonel, what regiment was you connected with?" "Xo reiment," was the answer! Well, how did yoV 'derive your ' title? " "Oh," said he, "I was at one time connected Vwith the State militia; but I soon found that we" were to be used in active service, and I resigned. I Vas opposed to fighting in the war, and was determined tot to do it." " Well, but that did not give you a just right to the title you now claim,' said our friend. "No," he answered, "but it is a popular thing now, and as?I expect to be a candidate, the title will sound big with the soldiers, "you see." Turning to" General S., our friend inquired what division of .the - army he had commanded; "Me," he re plied,.' oh, I was doffed Generally my friends, in prospect of a commission that I was to ret-eive, in case it became necessary, to' "make an anneal to arms by the K.' GVCs." -: - -! - xne curiosity oi our inend was excited, and he thought he would learn the derivation of all these high sounding titles. Capt. S. had once received permission to organize a "critter company," not to go beyond the limits of the State, however, but took good
care not -to organize but to disorganize. Major D. had been honored with his title, simply because of the admiration of his friends, and a disposition on his part to be flattered, and so on with the half a dozen, all glorying in titles' they had never won. , , T , , j ' -When he had heard the last explanation, our friend rose up. and quietly said, " Gentlemen, I guess I am in the 'wrong pew.' I love to honor the men who honorably won a good name, but stealing titles, is, in my judgment, disgusting and disgraceful. , I hope I may never again meet such a batch of title-hunters and title-pilferers as you all are." ,'.' j .,-'. - '-.. . . . So it is with "Copperheads everywhere.' . In every way possible they attempt to steal the honors that belong
to others; and in many cases have the J audacity to try to deceive soldiers,' and make. .them , believe they, are jheir friends. But all such professions are as empty as the titles of these drunken office-seekers, whose acquaintance our friend "was . so unfortunate, as to make.
