An -Attempt to Release the Prisoners tx the County Jail. For several days Sheriff Darling has had reason to suppose tnat it was the intention of a hired girl in his employ to release the prisoners in the County Jall especially ames M. Hudson who wad recently sentenced to the State's Prison for life, on a charge of murder. The conduct of the girj led to suspicion, and the Captain watched "iier closely. On Sunday night last, it was discovered that Hudson was to be released. She had gotten possession of the duplicate outside key that opened the cell in which Hudson was confined. '. It was the intention to unlock the cell so that the prisoner could easily open it. The key of the outside door was to have been left in the passage, at a place where the prisoner could find it, and by that means he was to make his escape; but the sagacity bf Captain D. thwarted all the plans. So soon as the girl ascertained ; that all her plans had been discovered, she conveyed the key to hdr brother-in-law, a hackman in this city. At first, she denied any intention to release the prisoners, and disclaimed ail knowledge) .of tbe, missing. key j but by ja little persuasion, peculiar to Capt.'D.,she disclosed the whole plan, and told whee the key was to be found. The Captain recovered it; and thus ended the plot: to release the prisoners. It is understood thit Hudson' had offered the girl $1,000 in gold If
she would secure his release. If parties outside were cohnected with the plot, it not known., having theik Fun. The Union men of old Warrick are having their own fun about the defalcation of Brown, the Copperhead; Treasurer of,' that; county,, and the same who opposed the gallant Capt. Masters, at the late election for that office, his defalca tion being kuown at the time, or at yleast,, it was iyery generally conctided.: But notw ithstand imj this, the Democracy j&rsisted in running Brown' again. His ' Burrtles hav$ made every possible excuse, and used every neani tb have the matter 'explainbd and adjusted' so that they would hot have, to ,'antee' up those, little ten thousand iof Greeiibkcks, but it is all no go.!'C6ihmissioners from other counties have examined the books with a hope to fihdraTloophle or a .balance in B.'s favor, but still the de falcation stares them, in the facel" It- has been fa matter of great wonder to all the people: In that county, as to what Brown could have done with all , the money, he being a minister of the gospel and not ad dicted to drinking. Some of the sagacious ones of Booneville, have suggested that a large portion, if not all of it, was invested in Dodd's Sunday School ' 'Books which were captured at Indianapolis, more than a year ago, and with which it was intended to teach the young Democratic idea "how to shoot." we should not wonder if that was Its use." All of the sureties haveeither paid upor eonfessed judgment, we learn, so that the Treasury will not suffer. j " ' After the defaleationjiad, heen discovered an enthusiastic supporter of the Onscratched ticket ald that 'he did not care, he would stick to the party if the candi date had stolen a horsethe night before the election l ,!. . t Srui'vi.; .--:'" ! ; Bkfoke Esquire' Walker' George Coker, charged with concealing stolen goods, had a preliminary examination before Esquire Waikef , yesterday, who held him to bail in the' sum of i-'MJO, in default of which he was sent to Jail. ; He Is the man who was charged with having concealed goods .which his wife, Eliza Coker, tad stolen from P. IS. Gelssler,' on Saturday last. She, however, denies that her name is Coker, but says that it is McCleland. She lives up Green River, and has a store there, and is well off, we are informed. It is a little strange that such persons should resort to .thieving, especially on so small a scalev She has not yet been arrested, but Tsrlll, no doubt, be brought to grief shortly. Serenade. --A party of young gentlemen gave" a beautiful serenade in' front of our office 1 last night We. regret that we were not present to hear the music, but the fore man' and compositors, who are fondof good music, inform ns that it was indeed gopd-r-channing.
