J... General Ctcrnaas. :,. General Leggettgives, in' the Zanesville Courier, the ollowing anecdotes of the inability y General Osterhaos to speak the Eglish language correctly: "The Generl's not learning to speak English tminds us of one or two incidents it his military career. One morning rhile confronting the enemy at Keieaaw Mountains, they made an attaik on Osterhaus' command. He v&a at breakfast, when an orderly dashsd up with, " General, the rebs are advancing upon us.' . - - 4 Shustwait, "said he, till I gits mine coffee: I makes him hell smell.' . " After drinking his coffee he hurried to th front, and, if he did not literally fdfill his promise, he quickly repelled the attack, and made the enemy glad to regain the shelter of thai- works. " "The boys ever afterwards knew him as 'hell smell.' - - ,f " " On another occasion, a number of General officers were rallying him about his being a German, taking occasion to tell him, among other hings, that Sigel was the only German officer of any account in our army. "Sigel! Sigel!' said he, irately, 'vy I can kick him mit von hand.' "
Brownlow and Johnson. The following story, which went the round's of the newspapers several years ago, may be reviewed with interest at the present time: ' " , , r Not more than four years "ago, Andrew Johnson (popularly called "Andy,") now in the U, S. Senate, was f the Democratic,; candidate for Governor of Tennessee against Gentry, American. Parson Brownlow, the " fighting Methodist " of the Knox-xille-Whig, had gone over with the remains of the Whig party to the Know Nothings, and was the warna partisan of Gentry. Eastman, as the conductor of the leading Democratic journal, was, of course, with Johnson, and, as was nis worn, gave the opposition vigorous -blows. Gentry iwas defeated, but in honor of his brave associates," partners of his toils,; he celebrated the event by a grand supper, 'at which Brownlow was present. Wheu. the company had got pretty deep into their cups, and were growing rather boisterous, the arson (who happens to be a teetotaler), thought he had better retire, and, was making a move to that .effect,, when he was stopped by Gentry with the observation that ' No minister of
-. the GosDelshVcPDlflJj house and enjoy his hospitality ana fo off without praying in the family.' Jivwnlow felt the rebuke, and at once set about his duty. , He read a chapter in the Bible, sung a hymn, and commenced a prayer. He prayed for Gentry and his household friends:
for the welfare, of. Tennessee, of the National Confederacy, the American eagle, and the Star Spangled Banner; for Christendom and heathendom ; for the universe and ' rest of mankind ' And finally,' 'iaid the parson,1 4 we pray Thee,-0 Lord; if" it be possible in the plentitude of ThV infinite mercy, to pardon and save Andy Johnson and E. G. Eastman.' ' Stop! stopf exclaimed Gentrw don't let him do it it would exhaust the plan of sal vation!'" h n ' - .. A Dead Shot .The following good storv of U , of Racine, r an inde fatigable And successful sportsman a . dead shot at anything ; in the game line, but particularly " fine-lined " on wild geese, whose heads were sure to ' suffer "jest back of the eye," if with in range ot his rine : Not manv years since our hero. " with an enuallv fun-loving friend, af ter spending a day with their dog and guns, were wending their way homer ward, when, in the "evening twilight, the waeffish companion discovered the head and neck of a wild goose peer ing through a neighboring fepce. , Stop your d-r-3 noise, said U- , " and wait a bit. 1 II have mm just back of the eye;' you can bet your lite on that." Stepping back a pace, and bringing the old trusty to his face, U blazed "Hallo, there!" followed back the report "what are rou shooting here for? Don't you know the difference Vufwpen the handle of a com tloah an( a iroose'8 neck?" 'Twas enough! U had shot the handle off from aeora1Pkgh.
