tie$ The steamer Superior arrtTea a;

our wharf yesterday morning, with 500

sick and wounded soldiers from Fittsburgh

Landing, in charge of Dr. Blackman, Brig

ade Surgeon. Dr. B. wished to land all

the sick and wounded at EvansTllIe and

Henderson, so that the boat could immedi

ately return to Pittsburg Landing, and

reliere the hospitals there, which are over

crowded. A citizen surgeon on board

howerer, strongly objected, and insisted that the sick should be carried on to New

Albany. A general consultation was final

ly held, and it was agreed to land 100 here

and take the rest to New Albany. It is

understood that in case of an action, hospitals for the wounded will be opened in Corinth, as every tent and house at Pittsburg Landing is crammed with sick. The following has been handed to us for publication :

There "is an article in the ' Joumal of

this morning, stating that; a soldier from the hospital at Mt. Vernon, going on far-

lough, arrived here in a very critical condition. Now, the natural supposition

would be that the "hospital ? was Government hospital ; but there is no Government hospital in operation as yet at Mt. Vernon, though one is being prepared. The hospital from which the soldier really must have come was a private hotpital, estab

lished by the Sanitary CommiUe of the

town, and was carried on by the citizens on their own hook. Let the blame fall in the

right quarter. If there was more "red

tape," which means ttrict interpretation of

the regulation, and attention to forme and

minutiae, these things would not happen

tsy Gov. Morton received . authority

Thursday from Gen. Halleck to have all the

Indiana regiments in the Department o1

the Mississippi filled up; and accordingly

recruits will be received for all those regiments in service in Tennessee, Missouri and Kentucky, as well as the 60th," 61st, and

C3d regiments, now in this city guarding nriunnera. The svstem of recruiting will

be that in vogue before the 1st of January,

nA officers will be sent to the State for

recruting purposes for each regiment. r

This institution (so far . the dispensation f medicine axd the interests ,jf toe sick and wounded are concerned) we believe to be" conducted upon a plan deserving the approbation of all concerned. - An the idea and will venture the propojab now. that a soldier is iost as good as

a white man, provided always that be de

ports bimselr witb t&e same degree oi prupriety. But by the plan here instituted of

having two or three tames oi enure inherent grades, we conclude that, in the estimation of our Mistress, at least, a soldier is of

a low caate. - Table No. 1 is mrnisnea wun nice, clean dishes, filled with food of an in

viting quality, sucd as every vaneij vi canned and dried fruits,Jdelicious pies, biscuit, beef steak, potatoes, butter and eggs, and other delicacies too tedious to mention.

Of this a soldier is not allowed to partake.

While Nos. 2 and 3 are Invariably turn is ti

very good bread, but seldom any potatoes or butter. If butter is allowed it is of a

quality that bids defiance to the stomach of

a citizen, bene it is ot no use out ior

soldiers. 1 -

We have experienced much difficulty at

times in obtaining food sufficient in quantity for those who are confined to their wards,?owing we are sure, to our Mistress' fears, that there might be a surplus, and a

soldier might have tne satisiaction or eauag a morsel that is good enough for a white man. We have submitted to usage here

that we would not have done under other circumstances, and do not feel disposed to

bear much longer. Our Mistress naa positively forbidden the fair waiters to attend on any "soldier" who should seat himself at table No. 1, yet it is true that a few favorites have been admitted there, while

others .of evual caste have been prohibited. We have known nurses to go from morning till evening without eating, from the fact they could not leave their charge at mealtime. -She said w there was nothing cooked,"but we knew better. There is a remedy for every evil, and we suggest that if the right persons were placed in a sphere suited to their capacity things would go off more smoothly. . t . Further said deponent saith not. Patriotic Latter. EoiToaa Jouukal: Friend Liffton of

Peru, Indiana, muit not blame us for the

liberty taken with her letter. It is too eood for one, even if he gets the toeht and

not the mitten. Therefore will you serve it

out to your many readers. -

Often' in unpacking sanitary stores we

have to stop and read the kind messages pinned to some comfort for the sick or

wounded, and who can blame us :

Diab Volustmr: And so you are the

one to get this pair of socks that I have knitted I Well, really you are highly favored ; it is not every one that will find a let

ter in their socks no indeed i -an tne time I was knitting these socks I kept wondering what kindof looking soldier

would get them, but I was not so particular how he would look as -1 was how be conducted himself whether he would be a

whole-souled, true-hearted soldier, and

fight bravely for the glorious Stripes. You

have lett borne, inenas, anu an mat is ueur

to you, to go and help protect tne nag tnat haa waved so proudly these eighty odd

years over the most prosperous country on the globe. ' Is not yours a glorious cause 7

Are there cot many pleasures connected

with it? -When the war is ended and yoo retnrn to your home, bringing the laurels you have won, will you be sorry then that you endured a few privations and hardships? No, never! I hope that these socks may be the means of giving you some comfort ; that they may help protect your feet from the cold. I hope our soldiers will never feel discour. aged or sad, but remember that the friends left behind think of them often and kindly, and not only those with whom you are intimately acquainted, but also those whom you have never seen or met, every volunteer in the Federal army is dear to us. I love every one of them, and only wish it was possible for me to be one too, and the subject of my lamentation every day is, "Oh, that I were a boy 1" But then you know that . Many a flowar it born to bloah nnssen. And wast it fragrance upon tha desert air;' So I must be contented and stay at home and knit socks and mittens for the soldier

boys, and do aU I can to make them cheerful and happy, while they try to knit the Union together. Bless their dear souls. I Dresume you have seen socks knitted

more nicely than these, but as my proficiency in knitting was never tested until the volunteers needed knitting done for them,

I will let that suffice as an apology for their looks. And now I want to tell you, confidentially, that if they fit you, you haven't

very small feet. That is all tnat i nave to say, that is, on that subject.

I hope you may not become contaminatea by any of the evils and 'temptations witb

which you may be surrouaded in camp.

There is much that vou. wul have to guaro

Hoping that you may be kept from all

rial capacity' our" readers find us premedi-

tatedly and with malice aforethought engaged in puffing any patent medicine, but during our recent trip to the melaacholy scenes ot Pittsburg Landing there was one medicine which found in the bands of nearly every soldier, giving relief wherever applied,, whether . internally or externally. We refer to Perry Davis' Vetetable Pain Killer. All spoke loud in its praise, and the kind hearted Surgeon of

one of our Indiana regiments inrormea us that he believed it was the only thing that saved at least half of his regiment from dying of dysentery during a, recent long march, and we cannot help suggesting to our friends among the army sutlers that it is one of the articles they should never be out of. ! It is packed in saw dust, two dozen in each box, and can be forwarded over the roughest road without danger of breaking. Is sold in Evansville by Keller & White, Preston Bro's, P.
