Horlbul, BrlK.dler-Oeuer-. ai Commanding 4th Divltian, t : ::;'cosoiitjpE0,3 . -It appears from bia report, which I desire may be taken as part of mine, that soon after arriving1 on the field of battle in the tnornig, the lioe of troops in front broke and fled through the liaes of the Fifteenth and Forty-fifth Illinois, without firing a 8 hot, and left the Fifteenth exposed to a terrible fire which they gallantly returned. Lieut Col. Ellis and Major Godda; were killed here early in action, and the r ineot fell back. The same misfortune 'rom yielding of the front line threw the - Oi'tysi.tth Illinois into confusion, and ah'.ongh the fire was returned ' by the Forty-sixth with great spirit, the opposing force drove back the unsupported regiment; Col. Davis in per3oa bringing off the colors, ia which gaiiant act he was. severely wounded. The Twenty-fifth Indiana and Fourteenth Illinois changed front and held their ground on the new alignment nntil ordered to form on the left of Gen. Mc'Clernand's commend. JT-ha Fifteenth and Forty-sixth were sepwita lien. Mctaernana a ngac - The battle was sustained in this position, the left resting near my headquarters, until the left wing was driven in. The becond Brigade fell back toward tne river, ana was soon followed by the First and Third, and reunited at the heavy guns. This closes the history of Sunday 8 battle, so far as this Division was concerned. On Monday morning, about a ciock, my Division was formed in line, close to- the river bank, and I obtained' a few crackers for my men. About 9 a. m., I was ordered by Geri. Grant to move up to the support of Gen. McClernand, then engaged near his own camp. With the First Brigade and Mann's Battery I moved forward, nnder the. direction of Captain Rowley, Aid-de-Camp, and formed line on the left of General McClernand, with whom the Brigade and, battery remained daring the entire ;da t . taking their full share ia the ; varied - tor raea -of that division, in the gallatrt-charges and the desperate resistances which checquered that field. I am nnder great oongations to tren. McClernand for the honorable mention he has personally given to my troops, and have no doubt that his official report snows toe same, and as they fought under hia imme diate eye, and he was tn cnier commana, i leave this to him. . . The Second and third Brigades went into action elsewhere, and again I an compelled to refer to the report of -their 'Immediate) commanders, only saying that" the Second Brigade led to the charge rderea Dy wen: Grant, until recalled by Major General Bnell. and that the third ungaae was aeep-. ly and fiercely engaged on the right of Gen; McClernand, euccesstaiiy stopping move ment to flank his right, and holding ' their ground until the firing ceased. - ; . . . . . McClernand, to the rear of his line tn hrino- nn freah trooos. and was. engaged in pressing them forward until the steady advance of Gen. Buell, on the extreme left, the firmness of the center, and the closing in from the right of Gens.: Sherman and Wallace determined the success of the day. h.n f eailni mv exhausted brigades and left them to their camo. ; : : The erround was such on Sunday that I was unable to- use cavalry.- UoL iayiors Fifth Ohio cavalry was drawn top-In order of battle nntil near one o'clock, in the hope that some opening might oner tor tpe use of his arm.
