The wounds received by Con stable Welch on Sunday by the band of Miles Ogle, eon trary to all supposition, proved fatal at half past ono o'clock yesterday afternoon. j - Wo Lave learned some farther particulars of the affair from the officers who received Welch's dying declarations. Welch, learning that Ogle was on the boat, sent a boy for another officer, and then proceelcd' to t bo boat alone. A large dog waa tied in the bow of the boat, which barked at tbe ap proach of Welch, attraction the mother of Ogle, who opened the door, bat seeing Welch, immediately closed it again. Welch told her to take away the dog, to which she paid no attention. Welch then drew bis revolver to defend himBelf against tbe dog in case he offered to bite. As Welch approached the door. Ole called to his mother, faying, " let hiua in I'll kill him if he comes." As Welch enter ed, Ogle 6hot him with a douMr-barraled shot gun, tbe shot taking effect iu bis right arm, lacerating it terribly. Iu a nionaeat or two, Ogle discharged the oluor barrel, the contents takius: effect ia the breast and lift shoulder. , Tbe woman, in tbl meantime, had seized Welch bv his coat, tearing the ekirt oft of it. and then selziDC a stick, struck him several blows. Ogle immediately took to his fckiff and started down the river, and at last accounts had not been caught. - j Tbe mother of Ogle ia under arrest, we believe, a3 an accessory to the murder, i Welch waa a brave man, and simply desired to do his duty as an officer. Prisoners still continue to come ia and the number, it i3 thought, will reauh 7,000.' : On Thursday last two batlerios of fine rifled cannon were found in tho woods, a large amount of valuable proporty, such as horses, mules, wagons and arms are daily being discovered. J Island No. 10, March 8, 1862.: Ton will bo glad to learn that this position, bo admirably adapted by nature for defensive purposes, haa been so strengthened tince the evacuation of Columbus, that it can now bid defiance to the assaults cf the enemy. We feel satisfied that it cannot be captured by any direct attack, and! the-strategic movement which .may be resorted to for its destruction will be anticipated by the sagacity and skill cf Qeh. Beauregard I may now, without iadiscret'pa, reveal - the fact that, previous to the evacuation of Columbus, the defences of . this position were much less perfect than Gen., Beauregard himself had been led to believe by the assurances cf those in whom he had every reason to confide. It is fortunate, perhaps, that the enemy were equally misinformed. ' Had they been aware of the real state of affaire, they might, by an enterprising and energetic policy, have inflicted a severe blow upon ua. , Luckily they were ignorant of the facts, and their gunboats were too busily employed on the Tennessee and the Cumberland to be spared for service in this direction. - - Tbe moment of linger is now past, and we are safe. ";, The position is not only tenable, but, I am confident, impregnable against any naval force that can approach it. This result is due, in a great measure, to the indefatigable energy of Captain Harris, who gained bo much credit by his labors at Manassas. I presume, tbe evacuation of Columbus was, at1 first, regarded by " the people of New Orleans as almost a . surrender of the key of the river. It would not be surprising that a - movement go sudden and so unexpected should have had a depressing influence, after so much emphasis had been laid opon the occupation of ColIambus, and so much had been said of tbe absolute necessity -of maintaining that position." But time will ' show that " the maneuvre was the best that could have been devised to meet the exigencies of the situationand that it was dictated, by a profound military . sagacity. The step was taken only, after General Beauregard had become convinced . of its necessity. Col.
