The steamers Baltic and Adams arrived here yesterday, having left Fort Donelson on Saturday afternoon. They brought no intelligence not already reported. We were informed by the Clerk of the Baltic that it was impossible to procure any reliable reports of the Egbting. It consisted mainly of skirmishing, and up to Saturday afternoon no general attack had been made on the Fort. Two of our gunboats were disabled one by a shot in her rudder, and the other by a ball striking the hull, which caused her to leak badly. Two pilots had been killed. A thousand conflicting reports . were circulated on the streets yesterday, but they are unworthy of credence. .Lieut. Col. Morgan, of the 25th Indiana, is reported seriously wounded, but we hope this may prove uufounded. We are iuclined to beieve that nothing definite will he heard from the Fort for several days." Every dispatch received at this office, concerning tha fight, will be at once given to the public. The 55;h Regiment, Col. Mansfield numbering about 300 wen, marched in from Camp Vanderburgh Saturday afternoon, and embarked on board the Grey Eagle bound for New Albany, where they will be consolidated with Col. Greshatn's Regiment. They are a fine body of men, in size and appearance, above tle average of Indiana regiment?, and it is well that they are to go at once into the field. Cols. Mansfield and Gresham have not yet arranged the list of ofHfers for the new regiment. The report that the 62d Regiment was also to be consolidated with the abbva regiment?, does not seers to be well founded, as the three would make more than 1,200 men. JsagWe have in our possession, a gun captured at Fort Henry. It is a fine arm entirely different from anything we have yet seen, with a barrel fuliy four and and a half feet long and an inch bore.. The piece has no lock and was probably carried by the secesh for the purpose of frightening the Yankees. '-",-' ' : . : A number of excellent double-barrelled shot guns are in the city, having been purchased by the visitors to Fort Henry at prices from 52 to $4 each. The soldiers are driving a brisk trade in the' captured trophies taken in the rebel camp. te" Toe Missouri Democrat says that the ("jopie along the Tennessee river, when they saw the Union fljjr, exclaimed "My stars I" indicating both eurprise and patriotism. SQ?" The editor of the Carbondale Times furnishes in his last paper a blank column in' order that bis friends may write a "leader" to suit themselves. He says fault has been found with his previous production?, and he hopes his patrons will fill up the space with whatever matter tbey see proper. Fort Donelson. A gentlemnn who baa been on several recent scouting expeditions tbrouarh Centucky and Tennessee, informs us that Fort Donelson is a much stronger tort than Fort Henry. It sits upon a biufT bank of the "river, and is armed with about twenty heavy guns, which are ranged In two tiers on parapets. Our informant tbink3 the upper tier of guns would not be effective if the river were low, as tbey could not be . discharged at aoy object nearly under them, without danger of baing dismounted from jieir car-s riasres. As the Cumberland, however, is high and rising:, their gnn3 may be effectively used against our gunboats, and wiil give Commodore Foote a warmer reception than he met at Fort Henry . . : -r Tho Commodore left Oiro on Tuesday night, with a full appreciation ' of .J,he strength of the enemy's detncta, bat with a determination freely expressed to his officers, to reduce the fort or sink every vessel in his fleet. M. Democrat. . Illisoib' New CossTtrcriox. The new Constitution to be adopted by the Constitutional Convention of Illinois will provide for a general election of Governor, Auditor, Secretary of State, Treasure!-,, Superintendent of Public Instruction, Attorney General, members of both branches ;tf the" Generel Assembly, Judges of the Supreme and Circu t Courts, aa well as County Judges and Attorneys, Clerks of Cuiiaty Courts, and other county oncers, in November next.
Soldiers' Relief Aseocle-tton. f Editors Jocrkav: Some weeks ago it was mentioned in your papers that the funds subscribed and collected for the benefit of the families of volunteers, were nearly exhausted,- which was so at that time." The County Commissioners promptly came to the assistance of the committee with an appropriation of $1,000 to be drawn by the Trustees of Pigeon Township not 4o exceed $100 per week and this sum is only sufficient at the present time to keep the store supplied with provisions, baring near 100 families to provide for. ' Wood and coal must also be provided, and for this object the committee call upon the benevolent for voluntary aid, and if any of the Ladies' Associations have money not used in supplying clothing to the volunteers in service, their families at home need it for wood and coal, and clothing for their children. A. C. Halleck, Chairman Executive Committee,
Candidates for Bbight's Place. The following gentlemen are named as the probable successors of BrigLt: Gov. Wrignt, John P. Usher, R. Dale Owen, Judge DeBrnler, and B. W. Thompson. ' T Items of Interest ' A "gentleman of veracity" asserts that h8 saw a horse's nose frozen in, while drinking in a trough, at Portland, Me., a lew days ago. The Washington correspondent of the Philadelphia Inquirer says the magnificent preparations planned by a few gentlemen tor a pleasure trip abroad next summer, as Commissioners to the World's Fair, are knocked in the bead. Congress will not vote the $50,000 which these self-appeinted tourists asked, or even the $33,000 to which tbey reduced their estimates. A young man, who has heard of the Morgan contracts, wants to know if any of th.e Secretaries at Washington have got any Bisters left? He would like to get a chance as brother-in-law down there. , There will be a rush of women toward Washington at once. The fair sex will be excited beyond measure to know that female clerks are to be appointed in the Dead Lettor Office to read and return letters. A man went into the Albany Express office, the other day, and wanted a copy of the paper. The price being two cents, be proposed to take only one-half of the sheet and pay one cet ! He said he only wanted the war news. The Circuit and District Courts of the United States met on Tuesday, at Indian apolia, Hon. Judge Treat of Illinois, pre' siding in the absence of Judge Huntington, who saih-d from New Y'rk last week for Cuba, wbe; - he ?oe3 for the benefit of his health. tJouvraK fciTKR Arbkj'ikd. A man was arrested at Terre Haute on Tuesday, for passing counterfeits on the Bank of the State of Indiana. He was committed. The Dubuque shot tower is turning out about a ton and a quarter of shot per day, and is hardly able to keep pace with the demand. The 13th Michigan, Colonel Shoemaker, armed with Minnie rifles, and a battery of Michigan artillery and a Wisconsin regiment passed through Indianapolis Thursday morning tor JLouisville. A young mau'who applied at a recruit ing station for enlistment, was asked "if he could sleep on the point of a bayonet." when he promptly replied by saying, '-he could try it, as be had often slept on a pint of. whisky, and the kind they used in Brookville would kill further than any shooting-iron he ever saw." - - Sipples, one of the jolliest members of the craft, on being asked if he intended to enlist, replied that he was the poorest band in the world to stop balls; he never touched even a fish-ball but It went through him. His determination to stay at home is fixed. A correspondent at Franklin, Massachuchusetts, writes that the bonnet manufactories are being put in order, and almost every train of cars brings youug ladies to renew their old familiar work after a long vacation. The Loss or British Vessels in the Wa?. of 1812. The New York Evening Post contains a table of the captures made by American vessels during the last war with Great Britain. The number of armed vessels which fell into our hands was 7, carrying 878 guns. There were also captured 354 merchant ships, 610 brigs, 520 schooners, 135 sloops, together with 750 uf various classes . recaptured, making 2.369 vessels, carrying 8,869 guns. To this is to be added 29 vessels of war, lost by wreck ortherwise, carrying about 809 guns, giv'ing an aggregate of 2,465 vessels, carrying 9,817 guns. Licenses to Newsboys. In Chicago the newsboys are allowed to sell papers only after taking out a license. The Journal of that city says that eighty firo licenses have already been issued. The youngsters with their bright badges with the numbers on them, look like a reserve' police corps. If any of the boys are convicted of a misdemeanor, their licenses are revoked and they are M turned out" of the society. This appears to us a good arrangement one which ought to be adopted in this city. A letter from Philadelphia, speaking of the rents in that city, says : " Persons owning real estate in Philadelphia, and living on the same, have a good rent on them, as the taxes are enormous. The bouse I am now living in rented last year for 5500. I now pay for the same house $180, and rent out a portion of it at that. This $180 scarcely pays the owner, yet he thicks himself lucky to have enough to pay for taxes, water rent, ic. A wealthy and amiable gentleman, at Hinsdale, Mass., who had been lately married," returning home hastily one night, found, upon, retiring, a strange gold watch and chain under his pillow, which proved to be the property of a das'iiug young man, who bad been quite an intimate friend of the gentleman's wife. The husband sold out and returned to his former home at the West, leaving the disgraced wife to follow her downward path to eternal infamy. As Item fob the Curious. As Capt. ZH. Small, of this place (Harwich), was splitting the butt of a white oak tree of about one foot in diameter, which grew on his own land, he discovered, about three inches within the surface, a white pine plug, and at the end of the plug a lock of human hair. .The hair was of a dark brown color, and very bright and glossy, although it must have been imbedded many .years, as the three Inches of wood over the plug was entirely perfect, aud had no appearance of ever having been bored through. Capt Cod Stp.
Th Stokk Blockade of Chablestoh. The Navy Department has received a com-
the report of Commander Parrot on the dis position of the second stone fleet. - Commander Parrot states that the remainder of the stone fleet were got into position and gunk on the 26th ult the date of his report. Commander Parrot thinks that they are exceedingly well placed, as they effectually block up a deep and excellent passage to the north of. Rattlesnake shoaL ' - . Captain Dupont states : " The Captain is misinformed, I infer from a letter received last night, aa to the steamer Isabel getting into Charleston by the main channel, where the previous fleet was sank. The obstruction there is complete, and has not been removed by the late galea, the weather breakingclear across. The Isabel got in by Maffit's chancel, and as that portion of it included between Rattlesnake shoal and the shore has been blocked up .by the second stone fleet, the possibility of getting into Charleston is still more circumscribed. The only channels remaining are the Swash and a portion of Maffit' s, and I have never less than three vessels covering them, and which now. ride out the galea at anchor." ' Ma. Botts' Pobition. A correspondent recently returned from Richmond, Virginia, thus alludes to the position Mr. Botts is now placed in; " when In Richmond I saw Mr. Botts. , He is virtually a . prisoner in his own house. When he Rets a chance to apeak he denounces the secession of Virgia1a, and says it was a fatal act, ana he Dopes that a restoration of the t nlon may De aifected. There are 6ome twenty or twentyfive thousand troops in Richmond, and there is a general apprehension that it will be attacked and possibly captured, in some way, by the Union forces, notwithstanding the rebel army At Manassaj." More Cheatihg A Washington corres pondent of the Philadelphia Press says that the Quartermaster of the Ira Harris Uaval ry, who had charge of the transportation of 110 horses belonging to the regiment, has been arrested at Baltimore, for trading off the animals, and replacing them with stock not worth ten dollars a head. He has been sent to Fort McHenry to await a dis position of the case. Gen. Dix telegraphed the fact to Col. De Forrest, the commander of the regiment, and that gentleman sue ceeded in finding nearly all the horses ia the Baltimore liverv stables. The Count v Treasurer's office of Jay county, was entered by burglars on the 4th inst., and the safe broken into and money to the amount of 4,620 abstracted. On the same night two horses were stolen from-a farmer living in the vicinity. . i2f This is the first season for the last thirty years that no flatboats have been built here, and at points above, for the down-river trade. The blockade of the Mississippi has very effectually stopped an important branch of business in the Wabash Valley. Terre Haute Journal. flOMK lSTERKSTS. gigf The pioneer packet J. H. Tha Relief Association is in want of assistance and we presume it will only be necessary to bring the subject to the attention of the public, to secure all the funds needed for the humane and patriotic purposes of the Association. ggj The river continues to recede very rapidly, and is now quite within its banks. I A large lot of splendid goods for gentlemen's wear has just been received at Lyons' by express. SSf It is reported that the 00th regiment will be consolidated with another partially formed regiment, at an early day. Probably the 60tb, 63rf and eist will be united, but under what Colonel, has not yet transpired. . Soviethisg kew aoain. J.
