Startling news may be expected to-day from the Cumberland. We have every reason to believe that Fori Donelson was attacked yesterday, and we wait with anxi ous hearts the result of the conflict. The fight may have been long and bloody, bnt the result is beyond a doubt. With Com. Foote and bis iron-clad gunboats in front and the division of Gen. Grant in the rear, with such regiments as the 11th, 25th and 23rd Indinna, and 6th Missouri, and many others equally efficient, the rebel army mu3t either surrender or be -cut to pieces. Fort Doaeison in our hands, the next point will be Claritsville, where the rebels will doubtless make a stand to prevent oar army from reachinNashville. - . Everything depends upon the celerity with which our forces are moved. The blows must fall thick and fast, not giving the rebellion time to resuscitate, that the Union men may be emboldened by our Buccosaes to'rise ng.iinst the despotism which so long has crushed them. We have every reason to believe that the victorious army now on the Cumberland, will ere long plant our Hag on the Capitol at Nashville. The passing hours are fraught with Jpainful interest to every patriot and we must possess our souls with, what patience we may, until the lightning flashes us the lintelligeuce of another great and glorious tri umph. t Ji'rom Fort Henry. Our exc-hnages from Cincinnati and St. Louis are filled with details of the late fight, and li.-tters giving an account of the situa tion of our forces and the result of the gun boat expedition to Florence. Steamers con tinue to arrive at the Fort from St. Louis and other point, loaded with troops. Most of the army is encamped about three miles from the Fort, and are rapidly, being got into position. Com. Wkah. Graham has established a daily line of packets between Cairo and Fort Henry ; the steamers G. W. Graham and Chancellor form the line. The price of pass-ige is fixed at S3. The boats leave each point at 10 a. m-., daily. The Eastport, cue of the boats captured by the Conestoga, is a. new and fast steamer which the rebels were converting into a gunboat. All her iron plating was on board, aud she can be completed for 10, 000. The Dunbar escaped by running into a creek, but not until the Conestoga had chased her above Florence. Large quantities of stores and provisions were seized at rebel camps by our gun boats, which were distributed to the needy families of Uniou men. They report coffee ?1 a pound, and whisky $2 00 a quart. A tearlul reign of terror has -existed throughout that section. The people have been deprived of all their armseven to their squirrel guns. Many of those who visited the boats had TJuion flags. At; Flor ence our officers were tendered a ball, but did not have time to accept the kind in vita' tion, though they promised to return at an early day.- We have already noticed the tact that our guuboats secured two' hundred and fifty recruits io Alubama. One: man who enlisted on the Tjler, says he haa not rlept ou hi3 firm for a month, being con etauily pursued by the rebels, who desired to press him into the service. . Many others who enlHted. bad been obliged t.. take art oath of allegiance to the Conftiilemie States. One man wha'cam down ou board the gunboats, said be had been ducked twice in a pond near his house, because ha refused to tnke the oath? J lore her above all things else on The're'was an impression, which hail been gradually gaining strength, that, the entire Southern people had become estranged from the Government, and were determined ' to resist- to the destruction of Iheir property, and even lives.'. This opinion gave rise to the most gloomy forebodings as to the ultimate triumph of the Government, which thd glorions news of yesterday dispelled, as the rising sun scatters the after a mists night of storm. . . ? ; : , - But our people had no right to doubt the loyalty of the people of Northern Alabama at least. , From the outset, they were true to the Constitution aa their fathers made it; they kept the stars and stripes flying to the last, and avowed that, however the other part of the State might go, they would re main in the Union. At Athens, Alabama, the flag of the Union was kept flying from the Court House long after the ordinance of secession had been passed, and the State I was constituted a na:t of the Southern Confederacy. But these noble spirits were not 1 sustained, and had to bend before the violence of the storm. They ' were shut in from all communication with other loyal portions of the country, and have been persistently and systematically plied with the most infamous lies, in order to arouse their animosity against the Government, but all to no purpose.. They have proven steadfast even unto the end. We that toast of our loyalty letusmention.it with becoming modesty until it has been put to a test similar to that which has compelled Tennes3eeans and Alabamians to pass through the fire of persecntioo, and, like them, come out without the smell of fire on our garments. . Price's army, has just arrived in this city, direct from Price 3 head quarters. He reports Colonels Poindexter and Dorsey, with eight hundred men, having met the enemy in greatly superior force at Boonville, and whipped them in three sen erate fights. They captured Boonville, and were still holding the town at lest accounts. Gen. Price 8 army was filling up rapidly with well armed and equipped men. - " The Missouri Democrat comments as fol lows on the above rebel " victory :" The fact is that Poindexter's camp "was routed in North Missouri by Federal cavalry, and all their equipments, baggaere, &e."; captured. ' The rout was completed by the capture of a large number of prisoners. The Paris Mercury, the only paper in North Missouri that dares to squint in favor of se cession, and evidently in their favor, says that Poindexter' a defeat - was the' worst slam" esperianced by the Confederates in north Missouri, and accuses-Poindexter"" of lack of capacity as a military eommauder.
