A correspondent of the Chicago Tribunej describing the battle of Belmont, says : Durieg tbe thiokest of the fight the body servant of Gen. McClernand, a ' mnlatto, named W. He was close by the General during the ; whole engagement, cheering tbe soldiers and swearing he would shoot the first mau that showed the white feather. Many of us laughed heartily at the fighting darkey, while the bullets flew like bail about us. , ,. j.; : , In tbe course of tbe fight a captain of one of the companies was struck by a spent ball, which disabled him from walking. The mrlttto boy, who va; mounted, role up t hitn and shouted out, " Cftptain, if you Sght any longer for the Stars and Stripes, cau take my horse and lead your men." He then dismounted and helped tbe wounded officer into the saddle. When he was walking away, a rebel dragoon rushed forward at the officer to take hi ra prisoner. Tbe darkey drew his revolver and put a ball .through the rebel's head, scattering bis brains all over the horse's neck. . , 4.
