Two cabmen were In front of the Haymarket Theatre, disenssiog the merits of Mr. Booth's ' Hamlet." " 'Ave you seen the new hector, laddy 7" " Aye, aye'; me and my missus saw 'im play . 'Amlet. " " An' did you loike 'im?" M Well, I agrees with what the paper says somethings I loiked and somethings I didn't loike. He tot down when I see others stand up. I loiked the photograph scene with the Queen' it's better tban 'aving the picture on the wall. Bnt I didn't loike 'is treatment of the Kink when he axed for old 'Poloneous" body ; he ought to have shown more respect for the 'King.' " At this junctnre a bystander, who had listened to the conversation, reminded the street critic tbat " Hamlet" was assuming madness that be hated the " King," who had killed his father, etc, etc. "That may be hall very well," replied cabby; bnt, yonr Honor, think be ought to show more respect for the 'King. . The fact is,' Mr. Booth's a Yankee, and you know Yankees hate kings ; that's the diffi culty, your Honor." Th Cavalry Sbbyice. The cavalry service is overdone. There is too much of it ; or rather, perhaps, too scant a supply of equipments for what there is. It is stated of the 60,000 cavalry, most of which are on the Potomac, 22,000 are all that can be used, although even these are in bnt poor circumstances to be serviceable. Of 12,000 cavalry in Oen. Buell's Kentucky division, it is stated that by count there ere not 3,000 prepared for the field. The cavalry is an expensive arm, and only useful after long practice; and unless this war is to last several years, affording time for our cavalry to become veterans, the money spent in raising and equipping regiments might as well be buried in the ground A Niw , Bombshell. Mr. Levi Short, of Buffalo,, has invented a now engine of de struction, in the shape of a bombshell or rocket charged with combustible matter in stead of with missiles. The Buffalo Courier says that a trial of the rocket was made in the Park on Friday ' night, with successful results. The rocket consisted of a cylinderical can, one chamber of which contained about a pint of fluid, and the other some three ounces of powder. Upon being bred it exploded and scattered the fiery fluid in all directions. The flame might be estimat ed at fifty or sixty feet ' in circumference. The fluid used burned seven minutes, not withstanding the application of water. Although the experiment tried was on a small scale, we see no reason why ten or twenty gallons of fluid fired by the same means, might not work terrible destruction to the ships or fortifications of the enemy. We understand tbat another trial, with ft much larger bomb, will be made in a short time. A Massachusetts firm engaged in the manufacture of shoes, is now filling an order for three thousand pairs of brogans, to be forwarded to Fortress Monroe for the use of the contrabands at that station. The sizes for men range from eleven to sixteen, and in one instance a special order was given for a pair of twenties.' ' BSy-The London Freeman, of the 8th nit., is by no means flattering to Mason and Slidell. It calls them, ia terms more energetic than flattering "The to worthless scamps, whom England detests while she cannot abandon them."
Col. Johh M. Hablax. We understand that the regiments composing tho brigade of Colonel Manson have taken up the line of march for Columbia. Their future destination is, of course, unknown to us. ThelOth Kentucky Regiment, under the command of Col. Harlan, is attached to this brigade. In common with the people of the whole State, we look to the future career of this . gallant and accomplished-officer with the highest confidence. Kentucky is proud - of him as one of her most gifted sons, and expects him to add to her own high and exalted fame. Possessed of the highest order of talents, combined with all the other qualities of the true soldier, he c&nnot fail to win a high position In the Federal army.- -We liave known him long and intimately, and we predict for him a proud, successful, and brilliant career. He belongs to that order of men of whom the country stands in need in this trying emergency. He ;will prove himself equal to the crisis. Louisville Jovrnal. .. . ' .' . , ,
