All Advertisements amounting to $3 or less must invariably be paid in advance to secure attention. All Job Work must be paid for on delivery. Transient Work must be pre-paid. ARMY CORRESPONDENCE Camp Bkstox, January 2, 1862. Ms. Editor: Tho' I neither lend nor borrow, Yet, to relieve the wants of a friend, I'll break a custom. 3hawpsk. The 25th Regiment send their New Year's compliments to their friends at home, and heartily hope that they enjoyed themselves as they have done on similar occasions heretofore. It has no doabt been the case that the gaps in the family circle, caused by the absence of some loved brother father or son, have beeD, on this yearly festival, painful ly perceived, and that thig circumstance may have marred the joyous hilarity with which, in ordinary times, the Old Year is usually ushered ont, and tbe New Year welcomed in. But we do sincerely hope that th old sports were enoyed, that the good dinners were appetized, and that wst wisiies for future happiness were cordially exchanged. Our boys, on Christmas, were on duty guarding the Secesh at the McDowell Institute, and consequently were not circumstanced so as to prepare fov any astonishing culinary display. It must not be supposed, however, that w had no Christmas. We were very sensible of the obligations we were under to celebrate it appropriately, and we therefore had our fun, which was heightened by the consciousness that we had nnder our charge a lot of rascals whom we bad assisted to capture, and which we gave to the government as a Christmas present. On New ear's day we made up for any drawback which duty imposed on our Christmas celebration, and warm quarters, good fiddles and good fiddlers, and plenty of good eatables and drinkables, conduced to make the occasion a memorable day in the campaign. But your readers will wonder what connection the quotation at the head of this communication has with the aecount of our holiday recreations. That is tbe best of the affair; and if your readers will exercise but a very infinitesimal amount of patience, I will let them into the secret. This morning, the day after New Year's, I got a box ; aye, a veritable box,"a gennine Christmas box, from headquarters. This box was examined by the "boys" with much cariosity. It was turned over and over, and man? were the conjectures made by the " boys '' as to its character. First, one remarked it was sent to us by the Missouri rebels, and was filled with innumerable death-dealing explosives, designed to avenge tbe humiliation of the capture of tbe infamous thirteen hundred ; then, another, not having the fear of the penalties prescribed by the " Articles of War," made and provided for introducing articles forbidden, remarked that it contained sundry bottles ot fluid designed " to make drunk come," and that it had been procured by some of the boys elected as a Committee of Comfort, nnd sent by express into camp as a " charitable contribution." This idea was not very victoriously combatted by an individual of religious proclivities, who meekly suggested that Chaplain Huring had procured us a box of tracts on the " Beauties of Patience and Perseverance as Exem plified in tbe Life of a Soldier," ftBd that these wholesome pamphlets were intended to be rehearsed by all sentinels on picket guard, when the thermometer was twenty degrees below zero, and also by guards in charge of secesh, when in fits of impatience at salutary restraints these same secesu wish the Union, its aiders and abettors, in extremely warm quarters. Another busy B " drew down his countenance to the necessay longitude, and gravely gave it as bis opinion, that Masou andSlidell were in the box, and were sent to us in this novel way by Secretary Seward, in order to steal a march on the British lion, and to avoid surrendering them to British anthority. This solution made much fun, and then it was voted to open it This box was opened, nira wo iuuuu; lu uui ueiignt, uiai an our conjectures were erroneous. We found what was indeed acceptable, and we found, that though absent and enduring toil, undergoing privation and hardships, and facing peril, that we are still remembered by our good friends at home. This box, as simple and rough as was its exterior, is prized inconceivably from its connection with home and its " fond recollections," and the evidence it contained of our being still thought of, still loved, and still known by those who rejoice when we rejoice, and sorrow with us when we sorrow. The ladies who were kind enough to get np this surprise, may rest assured that Company B will ever remember their kindness, and through whatever Providence may have in store for them, they will ever send them their good wishes, recognizing them as verily daugnteis of the Union, and worthy of a soldier's honorable mention. The only drawback was that the " mitts " did not go round ; but let that pass. If it had been that bnt one pair came ; had it but been the expression of the ladies in our remembrance, the boys would still nave rendered a soldier's gratitude. May the Evansville ladies have every blessing attending them through life. May they live to see this Union once more at peace and unity, and may their memories never become so treacherous as to forget the soldier, is the hope of Company B. John Rhkim.ader, Capt. Co. B. Adams, Jr., who holds the post of First Lieutenant in a Massachusetts cavalry regiment, is the son of oar present Minister to England, grandson of the sixth President, and great grandson of the secoud President of the United States. The New Orleans rebels say they have thirty thousand troops in that city and twenty thousand more within short call, and that the fortifications for the defense of that place mount four hundred cannon. The iron steamer Mississippi, which is now lying at Boston nearly ready for sea, has been chartered by the government for a trip South. Tbe Pennsylvania seacoast is to be defended. The Atttorney General of that State reports that the Engineer Department at vvasniug'on lj&a given assurances that one hundred and thirty-five large guns (now (ready and twenty flanking twenty-four pound howitzers will be mounted on Fort Delaware, and forty-seven large guns (now ready) on Fort Mifflin. As soon as Congress acts, the new fort opposite Fort Delaware will be erected, and the defensive capacity of Fort Mifflin increased.
